To say that the variety of crisps has gone downhill?

Why oh why won't they bring back ready salted chipsticks? Or even the supermarkets knock of version!? Why can't you buy single (or mutli) packets of walkers ready salted squares? I know my taste in crisps is boring, as I mainly long for discontinued ready salted flavours. Although I do miss branningtons(?) beef and mustard...Anyone remember ready salted kangaroo shaped crisps from the 90s? And those little ready salted triangles and or the ready salted tubes (same texture as walkers squares) both from sainsburys. Also, I have fond memories ot these maize based bacon flavour chipsticks (no idea what they were called) Anyone else remember these ?

Does anyone remember the tiny pig potato shape crisps, bacon flavour.

I hope I didn't dream it as no one seems to remember them!

I miss paprika crisps since going gluten free 😫 Anyone know of any that are safe?

I think the Lorenz brand from the World foods aisle (in Morrisons and Sainsbury anyway) are OK. They're the best paprika ones anyway.

I remember them! DH and I were talking about them yesterday. They weren't particularly nice, if I'm honest, but...tiny pigs 🐖 😍

I wish Walker's would stop faffing about. Their crisps are as hard as hell and the salt n vinegar ones are so acidic they take the roof of my mouth off.

They've bought over any crisp manufacturer with crisps worth mentioning and totally ruined them.

I'm waiting for Lidl to bring back Ham & Mustard crisps. They seem to rotate flavours but these were the best - haven't seen them for a couple of years though.

These are delicious but they've sold out in my work cafeteria and they haven't got any more in.

I'm with the OP on the plain chipsticks, you can only seem to get the salt & vinegar. Same with potato sticks, although at a push I'll go for the Lays Paprika ones you can get in Polish shops.

potato puffs...happy memories
transforma snacks pickled onion ❤️
Worstershire sauce ❤️

I'm a huge crisp lover and its all gone downhill. Not to mention the price and the crappy pack contents. Crisps were 36g back in the day, now they are 25g...that's not a serving!

Kpo58 · 16/01/2024 17:50

I still miss the spaghetti flavoured Monster Munch.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 16/01/2024 17:57

How hard can it be to just salt the chipsticks instead of salt AND vinegar.Annoying

JazbayGrapes · 16/01/2024 18:01

i love crisps from international shops - Polish, Romanian, Bulgarian

PonyPatter44 · 16/01/2024 18:02

You need to visit the dubious 24/7 mini-marts, my friends. All sorts of crisps and snacks that have been gone for YEARS from the supermarkets, plus the Eastern European flavours that are hard to find elsewhere.

However, even they don't sell Tayto cheese & onion. I still buy mine by the case from the Castle itself!

CheerfulBunny · 16/01/2024 18:05

@Sunshineandrainbow I think they were called Piglets?? I remember them from Primary school. They were incredibly thin but tasty, bit paprika-y.
I am loving the devotion shown to crisps on this thread. Very admirable.
Maybe try revisiting old favourites, OP. I had a bag of picked onion Monster Munch the other day and it BLEW MY MIND..

NomDePrune · 16/01/2024 18:10

Very long but interesting about flavours other countries have...

Ooh, I've just discovered the REAL Ham & Mustard I like are made by Tayto. Probably in the old Golden Wonder factory in Corby.

The salt and vinegar chipsticks are nothing like as nice as they used to be. They're sort of chewy rather than crunchy.

@Sunshineandrainbow I remember the pig ones too.

The ones I really miss are Fish and Chips though. I can still get them occasionally but not from the regular shops.

My local Tesco sells Tayto cheese & onion!

I don’t know which Tayto they are, though - I understand there are two different companies using that name?

JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots · 16/01/2024 19:47

In the 90s M&S did these amazing salted waffle crisps. They were square and had the same texture as rings used to have in the 80s. Then they just stopped doing them.
M&S used to do spring onion crisps in a multipack with beef and something else in the 80s.

My local indie corner shop does a knock off version of the combo mix from M&S and it's even better! It's made by a Glaswegian company whose name escapes me.

I miss Farmer Browns.

I really want crisps now. Not sliced potato type ones but proper children's ones. Much better imo.

Branleuse · 16/01/2024 19:47

I still miss potato puffs. Both the beef ones and the cheese and tomato ones.

Diversion · 16/01/2024 19:51

@HalfWomanHalfChocolate Yes the scampi NikNaks still exist, our local spar sell them 😀

Diversion · 16/01/2024 19:56

@mrsfindlay the kangaroo shaped crisps were called Jumpys, my children loved them and we could only get them from the shop on the farm where my husband worked. You can get the Paprika flavoured ones here https://www.piccantino.co.uk/kellys/jumpys-paprika-1 but they are expensive for the tiny packet.

For all those missing M & S prawn cocktail shells, I was absolutely gutted as Skips just arent the same at all. I am sure (hoping) that they will reappear in the future and taste exactly the same. Their cheese tasters just arent the same these days either.

JUMPYS Paprika 75 g

Crisp and delicious kangaroo shaped snacks. Price: £2.25. Content: 75 g. Delivery in 6 days.

I used to love cheese and onion ringos until the recipe changed

Also loved bitsa pizza years ago and the pizza pom bears were almost as good , then they got discontinued too

Polish friend gives me something similar to pizza pom bears from the polish shop- I’ll try and find out what they’re called!

Brannigan's! yes! These were the brand!

Oooooh Brannigans roast beef and mustard. Best crisps ever!!

JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots · 16/01/2024 19:59

B&M are good for Fosh N Chips. Scampi mil make aren't as good as they were but still available in most supermarkets afaik. I'm sure I remember just salted squares in multipacks. Go local and Tesco sell Space Raiders. I lived the Tesco knock off Pringles. They were harder and saltier. I don't like Pringles.
Mexican chilli McCoys are the business or rather were. They are rare and not as good as they were.
I like crisps. I'm reducing my salt intake this week and living vicariously through this thread.
Spanish 007 version of wotsits are awesome.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 16/01/2024 20:01

What I hate is that the only big bags of crisps in supermarkets are the 'hand cooked' ones. I hate them, they all taste rancid to me. Bring back megabags of ordinary crisps, I say. Smoky bacon for preference, but honestly any will do.

WishesPromises · 16/01/2024 20:02

I just want oregano lays. I don't understand why walkers can't do that?

PonyPatter44 · 16/01/2024 20:07

@BassoContinuo , the ones in the yellow bags are Tayto NI, made in Northern Ireland, and the absolute dogs' doodahs of all crisps.

The ones in the red and blue bags are made by Tayto Ireland, down in the Republic. They are perfectly fine, but they are NOT Castle-cooked by Mr Tayto!
