To say that the variety of crisps has gone downhill?

Why oh why won't they bring back ready salted chipsticks? Or even the supermarkets knock of version!? Why can't you buy single (or mutli) packets of walkers ready salted squares? I know my taste in crisps is boring, as I mainly long for discontinued ready salted flavours. Although I do miss branningtons(?) beef and mustard...Anyone remember ready salted kangaroo shaped crisps from the 90s? And those little ready salted triangles and or the ready salted tubes (same texture as walkers squares) both from sainsburys. Also, I have fond memories ot these maize based bacon flavour chipsticks (no idea what they were called) Anyone else remember these ?

Brannigan's Roast Beef and Mustard were soooo good! I also miss Burtons Potato Puffs, the cheese and onion ones!

This is the first time in my life I've come across anyone else who loved Potato Puffs. I was literally scrolling down this thread to reminisce about them. I used to get a 6 pack once a week when I was a teenager then they abruptly vanished. 😭

I got excited when I saw this photo and starting googling to death, only to later properly read your response to say they have been discontinued!! Annoyingly I remember seeing these in store a couple of years ago, but some some reason I thought they were just like the standard supermarkets own small potato type sticks (which never hit the spot) so I never tried them. Am kicking myself now! It's so annoying when loved products get discontinued

Maybe they didn't sell well for that reason — the packaging made them look like they were probably just a slightly overpriced version of the little hard potato sticks (which I still like, but they're not on the same level as all). But they were much more like a potato version of ready salted Chipsticks.

My crisp options are limited because of coeliac disease (nothing made by Walkers including Doritos, French Fries , Squares and Wotsits; no Pringles, no McCoy's, etc.) so I do get a bit annoyed when something I really like and can have gets discontinued. Supposedly there's a similar Japanese product called jagarico, but they seem a little more processed, and I'm not so desperate I'm going to start importing snacks from Japan Grin

Tesco finest have big bags of roast beef with horseradish almost as good as Brannigans beef and mustard , they did delicious camembert and rosemary at Christmas too but limited edition.

M&S is the place for good crisps, truffle, sticky glazed pork, smoked ham, seasalt and sherry vinegar, manchego and chilli, their sour cream and jalapeno combo mix is more addictive than crack.

I like crisps.

Currently eating Christmas Ham with Umami Truffle glaze crisps from Co-op so i have to vote YABU

AIstolemylunch · 15/01/2024 23:40

My favourite crisps are slat and vinegar square crisps and I buy them in packs from Morrisons or Sainsbury's. I do also regularly buy them in petrol stations where you often see them sold singly, for some reaosn, nowhere else.

I'm going to have to pop to M&S tomorrow. Last time I was there, they had the combo mix (still got a couple of bags of the pigs in blankets ones from before Christmas) but it was mainly cheese puffs, bacon Fries etc. I'm hoping to find a few that you've described as my taste buds fancy something new.

Had a big running argument about beef flavoured squares.
Nobody remembered them.
I had a very lovely chat on Twitter with a guy from walkers .who confirmed to me that they did exist, they were a limited edition. Not on sale for long.

This is precisely why I never bought them, I genuinely thought they were just the same as the bog standard potato sticks! That has reminded me, a couple of years ago I remember buying some crisps (from b&m) similar to how you and the other poster have described them (the extra crunchy sainsburys ones) they were in box I feel like the brand MAY have been cathedral city, but also feel like I.could be entirely wrong. Also around the same time, similar texture but "salt and pepper flavour" limited edition from the co op. Such a shame about limited crisp options to due to coeliac disease, is it mainly due to the cross contamination?

I do sometimes see salt and vinegar squares in shops but it's usually only cheese and onion squares when I see squares in shops.

Where have marmite walkers crisps gone? Used to see single and multi packs of them all the time but I never see them anymore.

I usually now settle for blue Doritos or roast beef monster munch now.

My mams recently had marmite ones! I see salt and vinegar squares all the time. My favourite

Dartmoorcheffy · 15/01/2024 23:42

I used to love cheese and onion ringos until the recipe changed

Also loved bitsa pizza years ago and the pizza pom bears were almost as good , then they got discontinued too

These sound divine. I love anything truffle. I've never seen these in co op (although I only live near a small convience store kind) do you know if these are veggie?

Mine are the ready salted version, I often buy the mixed 6 pack (just for the ready salted version) and shamefully waste (give away the rest)

@ggloriawasright - I loved beefy squares!! They were my favourite crisps ever & mo one else remembers them. Must have been around 2003/2004.

I wish they would bring these back.

I managed to get Fish and Chips just before Christmas, which made me very happy. I could live on the fuckers.

mrsfindlay · 15/01/2024 23:51

Also, anyone remember the Spaghetti bolognase version if walkers in early 2000s ish. The song Lady Marmalade - Christina Aguilera is coming to mind when I think about these, feel like they may have been both out at around the same time!

That sounds interesting, I'm guessing cheese flavoured though, if it's Cathedral City? I don't have a B&M nearby, but they seem to be a prime destination for weird snack connoisseurs.

Yep, mostly cross-contamination, I think; Walkers seem to just have a blanket "may contain gluten" warning, and it's not obvious whether it's a genuine concern or not. Pringles have actual wheat in them, though, as do Quavers (previously one of my favourites).

Mmmm, Brannigans.

do scampi nik naks still exist? They were awful and delicious at the same time.

lime Doritos seem to have been discontinued recently, at least, I can’t find them anywhere. Why oh why?!

KimberleyClark · 16/01/2024 00:04

Burts Cheese and Onion crisps are the best. Thicker than normal crisps.

LuluBlakey1 · 16/01/2024 00:07

Apparently, Walkers are stopping making Marmite crisps. I have been upset about this for the last two months. You can buy boxes of them on Amazon. I have considered buying two large boxes but would just eat them very quickly. I don't want a house full of them, I just want to be able to buy a bag if I fancy one.

Blueeyedmale · 16/01/2024 00:08

Some that I miss from my childhood

Discos (beef flavour)
Space raiders (cheese flavour
Marmite and Bovril flavour
