Nursery: Christmas jumper

AIBU?

So my DC is 2 yrs old and in Nov/Dec got a heap of Christmassy type clothes. Some very obviously Christmas (Santa jumper), some more fair isle type stuff. I bought quite alot of things and so did family - e.g my Mum bought 3 jumpers etc etc. So there is genuinely a lot of it but it all got worn from end of Nov through to New Year but obviously still in very good condition.

Some of the stuff I bought was really lovely and not that cheap - it was from John Lewis and JoJo etc but for me, I always think well lovely clothes for pics over the Christmas period and then it's stuff that can be worn for nursery till it gets wrecked/no longer fits.

So this morning did drop off at nursery and the staff member made a point of saying 'oh a Christmas jumper' quite disparagingly..... to be honest the jumper they went in with today wasn't 'that Christmassy' - it was a red fair isle jumper with small robins on it. But I do fully intend to send DC in with their Santa jumper in the coming weeks.

To be honest, I don't really care - given the tatt and thread bare leggings and stained tops I see other kids sent in wearing, a child going in wearing a lovely warm, clean, non-stained, albeit 'Santa' jumper isn't something I'm going to lose sleep over. It's nursery - clothes get wrecked. They fit. They're good quality - they can be worn for nursery until the weather gets warmer is my attitude. I'm not judging the monstrosity of outfits I see other people sending their kids in because I completely get it - it's nursery - and everything comes home with paint and tomato sauce and glitter all over it.

But I just wondered is this an eye rolling what the hell is that mother playing at - type of thing? Or would most of you just think the same - clearly got a lot of Christmas clothes, it's nursery, the child is 2yrs old - of course it makes sense for the child to wear them?

Or would you be secretly judging me thinking I'm very unreasonable? I'm genuinely planning on my DC getting full use out of these clothes for nursery till March! So be honest - I want to know what I'm up against! Haha.

Well we’re still within the 12 days of Christmas so it’s fair game for now!

But no i probably wouldn’t send them in a Christmas jumper after that personally.

I’ve put all DS’s Christmas outfits away with the Christmas decorations and will get them down in November next year and sell on vinted.

Sprig1 · 03/01/2024 12:30

My kids would keep wearing them as long as they fit.

Mine too! He was given a Christmas jumper with a Tree Rex on it this year from his Nanny and he loves it. I fully anticipate him to be still wearing it well into 2024 it's not like it's not weather appropriate.

Noodledoodledoo · 03/01/2024 12:32

I buy big to get a couple of years wear this year lots are going into general wear as they won't fit next Christmas! Wasteful otherwise!!!

Kitkatcatflap · 03/01/2024 12:35

I work in a dagis (Swedish nursery) and kids come in dressed in all sorts. Recently we had one child come in Halloween (ghost/bat/pumpkins) clothes right up until we broke up for Christmas. Perhaps it's personal for the staff - she doesn't like Christmas jumpers. As a member of staff - you are just bothered if they have enough spare clothes for 'accidents' or warm clothing for bad weather

TodayForTomorrow · 03/01/2024 12:38

I wouldn't send them in in a Christmas jumper, no. I always buy Christmas jumpers barely worn from Vinted.

I'm the sort of mum though that has made a nursery uniform of black leggings, navy t shirt and navy hoodie because I was so sick of all my daughter's (usually pastel) clothes getting paint and pens on after just one wear. I always bought cheap multipacks for nursery but even so, it got pretty grating.

Nevermind31 · 03/01/2024 12:39

I Never actually noticed what other kids are wearing in nursery; I also don’t buy Christmas clothes because of the limited use… but if I did, they would be worn until they no longer fit/ are not weather appropriate.
although I would not send child to nursery in a jumper… it was always quite warm in the rooms, so long sleeved tops it was…

Coffeespill · 03/01/2024 12:42

I'm amazed they even noticed. I'm stingy so keep all mine to sell on the next October

Youcannotbeseriousreally · 03/01/2024 12:42

I wouldn’t be sending them in with those clothes on. I’d be washing them , iorning them and putting them on Vinted in October.

GrandHighPoohbah · 03/01/2024 12:43

I found that the best way to do Christmas clothes was to buy in the January sales for the following year. But no, I would not dress them in Christmas clothes after this week personally.

mrsed1987 · 03/01/2024 12:44

I personally wouldn't, instead I would sell it all on vinted or market place in the lead up to next christmas

You can still do that if they wear them for a few more weeks/months though.

Its a jumper with a Christmassy picture on being worn by a small child. As long as it's weather appropriate it's ridiculous for anyone to comment on it.

SoupDragon · 03/01/2024 12:46

so, you notice and judge what the other children are wearing...?

I'm not judging the monstrosity of outfits I see other people sending their kids in

your description says otherwise! 😂

Vinrouge4 · 03/01/2024 12:48

My grandkids wear their Christmas PJs all year round. Can't afford to buy them just for the season.

Iwasafool · 03/01/2024 12:49

Maybe you think people will be judgemental because you are judgemental about what other kids wear. Honestly no one cares.

What’s the point in OP keeping them for next year? They won’t fit.

OP, you’e absolutely fine. No wonder the landfills are heaving if people behave like this in a throwaway culture.

maddiemookins16mum · 03/01/2024 12:49

If someone had said that to me, my child would be decked out head to toe in Christmas garb from now until April.

Might help if you read the OP. Did you miss the bit where the staff were judgemental to OP about the Xmas jumper?

Nothing indicates OP is judgemental 🙄

SheIIieB · 03/01/2024 12:52

I wouldn't be still putting mine in Christmas clothes after Christmas. If I seen someone doing this I wouldn't judge them at all, I'd maybe wonder to myself if it was because they didn't have any other clothes to wear, but not in a judgy way and I'd never say it.

Would you honestly think if someone was wearing a Christmas jumper they didn't have anything else to wear? That's such an odd thing to think.

Kalevala · 03/01/2024 12:55

Fair Isle with robins is just a normal winter jumper. I wouldn't send them in Santa clothing after this Friday.

How is that not judgy? At least own it.

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 03/01/2024 12:56

I wouldn’t bat an eyelid at that for nursery. Mine always wore clothes that were out of season, not going to get much mor wear size wise or were starting to wear out for nursery (and encouraged by nursery to do so) because they got so filthy!

The staff member said, 'oh a Christmas jumper' hardly the harshest judgement being as it was a Christmas jumper. I'm not sure how disparaging those 4 words could be.

Nothing indicates OP is judgemental Really? I'm not judging the monstrosity of outfits I see other people sending their kids in sounds judgemental to me, saying you aren't judging something you describe as monstrosities doesn't stop it being judgemental.

steff13 · 03/01/2024 12:58

I can't believe that the nursery worker was judging. I mean when my kids were that age I saw kids going in in princess dresses, superhero costumes, crazy outfits that didn't match; a lot of parents let their kids pick their own clothes at that age and they end up looking kind of crazy. A Christmas sweater on January 3rd cannot be the weirdest thing she's ever seen.
