Nursery: Christmas jumper

AIBU?

So my DC is 2 yrs old and in Nov/Dec got a heap of Christmassy type clothes. Some very obviously Christmas (Santa jumper), some more fair isle type stuff. I bought quite alot of things and so did family - e.g my Mum bought 3 jumpers etc etc. So there is genuinely a lot of it but it all got worn from end of Nov through to New Year but obviously still in very good condition.

Some of the stuff I bought was really lovely and not that cheap - it was from John Lewis and JoJo etc but for me, I always think well lovely clothes for pics over the Christmas period and then it's stuff that can be worn for nursery till it gets wrecked/no longer fits.

So this morning did drop off at nursery and the staff member made a point of saying 'oh a Christmas jumper' quite disparagingly..... to be honest the jumper they went in with today wasn't 'that Christmassy' - it was a red fair isle jumper with small robins on it. But I do fully intend to send DC in with their Santa jumper in the coming weeks.

To be honest, I don't really care - given the tatt and thread bare leggings and stained tops I see other kids sent in wearing, a child going in wearing a lovely warm, clean, non-stained, albeit 'Santa' jumper isn't something I'm going to lose sleep over. It's nursery - clothes get wrecked. They fit. They're good quality - they can be worn for nursery until the weather gets warmer is my attitude. I'm not judging the monstrosity of outfits I see other people sending their kids in because I completely get it - it's nursery - and everything comes home with paint and tomato sauce and glitter all over it.

But I just wondered is this an eye rolling what the hell is that mother playing at - type of thing? Or would most of you just think the same - clearly got a lot of Christmas clothes, it's nursery, the child is 2yrs old - of course it makes sense for the child to wear them?

Or would you be secretly judging me thinking I'm very unreasonable? I'm genuinely planning on my DC getting full use out of these clothes for nursery till March! So be honest - I want to know what I'm up against! Haha.

given the tatt and thread bare leggings and stained tops I see other kids sent in wearing

so, you notice and judge what the other children are wearing...?

I'm not judging the monstrosity of outfits I see other people sending their kids in

your description says otherwise! 😂

I came to say just this!!

No, I wouldn't send child wearing anything Christmassy now, OP.

I've got a 5 year old that's crazy about all things spooky, has been since he was about 2. He's at school now but he did go to nursery in clothes with skeletons, pumpkins, skulls, bats, ghosts etc all year round. No one ever cared. If they did, they certainly never said anything. Lots of the staff affectionately called him pumpkin and he loved it. Your kid is clothed and dressed appropriately for the weather, who gives a shiny shit about what design is on the clothing?!

Pickledonionout · 03/01/2024 13:47

@Christmaslights21 nope

What is a joke is that a grown adult is sat wondering about whether nursery staff are judging them

pathetic

You’re the pathetic one spending your life being nasty to strangers online.

ladyofshertonabbas · 03/01/2024 14:16

Yanbu. It’s not even twelfth night, anyway!

BubziOwl · 03/01/2024 14:16

As the first poster said, it is still Christmas!

My unreasonable judgement is that I judge people who don't celebrate or recognise Christmas for the full twelve days Grin

Shufflebumnessie · 03/01/2024 14:16

My DD is nearly 7, I bought a bundle of gorgeous Christmas clothes from Vinted for her. She's been wearing them for the past 2 months and I suspect she'll be wearing throughout the year until until they no longer fit.
If I saw a child wearing Christmas clothes outside of the Christmas period I'd just be pleased the parents were getting value for money! 😅

Why though? They're just clothes and they're appropriate for the weather?

Katela18 · 03/01/2024 14:26

Both mine have gone in with xmas jumper today lol. As you say stuff gets ruined at nursery and frankly I can't afford to buy clothes for one day and not use them again!

Goldbar · 03/01/2024 14:32

My DC get around three Christmas jumpers a year from different family members.

Personally I think it's fair game to wear them until mid-Feb (around Feb half-term is my mental cut-off).

Then they were always used as "nursery spares" until the summer/outgrown. Obviously not so useful for school.

I have a friend who I pass them onto in October. Her DC is a year younger than mine. The "handing over of the Christmas jumpers" has become an annual event in our calendars.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 03/01/2024 14:43

I'm with you - I couldn't give two hoots what other kids are wearing unless it's clearly unsuitable for the weather - and even then, I reserve judgement as kids have been known to be contrary about clothing!

My youngest spent the best part of ages 2-5 in his Spider-Man suit <shrug>

Smellslikesummer · 03/01/2024 14:54

Fairisle or winter theme yes, santa/christmas no.

hotpotlover · 03/01/2024 15:03

My son (3 1/2) has this lovely Christmas jumper from Tesco. He looks really handsome in it and he wears it all winter long to nursery.

I'd be really angry if his key worker made a disparaging comment about clean and warm clothing.

But I'm also the type of person that walks around in a wintery/Christmas jumper in November 😂

Ilovelurchers · 03/01/2024 15:15

The nursery worker just said "Oh, a Christmas jumper" - she may just have said what came into her head rather than meaning to upset you in any way. I presume her tone sounded negative but that may be due to other things - it's quite possible you are reading something in to it that she didn't mean.

Just as I think your comments about the cheapness of some of the clothes the other children wear may be upsetting some other posters, because not everyone has a lot of money to spend on the brands you mention, but it doesn't mean they love their kids any the less. You almost certainly didn't INTEND any offence by your comment either - just goes to show it's easy to give offence even without intending it, especially over a sensitive issue like how we care for our young children......

IYSWIM? Honestly not trying to be mean here OP - but I suspect this may be what has happened?

honeylulu · 03/01/2024 15:19

My youngest has often worn her Christmas clothes at other times of the year because she likes them! Once we went to Paultons Park on August bank holiday and she wore a Christmas dress. It made her day when a little girl behind her in the queue said "oh I love her Christmas dress, I wish I'd worn mine!"

No idea what adults thought and I didn't care. It was comfortable and practical for the weather (quite chilly that day!)

Tumbleweed101 · 03/01/2024 15:26

I work in a nursery. The only clothes that get judged are those inappropriate for the weather or for getting messy! I wouldn't take much notice of a Xmas jumper this side of spring.

I don't even let my kids wear Christmas PJs in the house after January. They get put away for next year (I always buy PJs a size up for this reason)

Why genuinely why? It's a pair of pyjamas who the fluff cares if it's December or May?

I care. I don't want them wearing Christmas stuff after Christmas. It looks and feels wrong to me. Just like I don't want decorations up after tomorrow. Keep Christmas things for Christmas.

But what if your child wanted to wear them and not put them away for 11 months? I genuinely can't imagine caring so much as to whether they had Christmas pj's on, it's just a pair of pyjamas at the end of the day.

tabbymctwat · 03/01/2024 15:45

My son wore a Christmas jumper to nursery on a particularly cold day in August once - he liked it, he wanted to wear it, so I let him! It's just clothes after all. He was clean, warm and comfortable so who cares? He also regularly went in dressed as Peter Rabbit but none judged him for looking like the Easter Bunny in October 😀

It's Christmas until Friday...

The PJs get washed and put away, the kids don't notice because they have lots of nice PJs to wear and usually get new (none Christmas) ones as gifts for Christmas anyway.
I feel the same way about PJs being a matching set. I don't like to see the wrong bottoms put with the wrong top. We all have different standards over different things.

I completely agree. Which is why I don't see an issue with wearing a Christmas jumper to nursery today. I wouldn't have mine wearing anything Christmas related after Christmas, as in the Christmas period.

Fionaville · 03/01/2024 16:02

@00100001 I see what I did there now 😅 I've completely lost track of days and thought tomorrow was Friday! See, I'm still in the Christmas spirit!

TheFastestSquirrel · 03/01/2024 16:11

Fair isle patterned jumpers have got nothing to do with Christmas!

Bellaboo01 · 03/01/2024 16:15

Nope - mine wouldn't be wearing 'Christmas clothes' unless it was during November, December or January. But, i also don't buy loads of Christmassy clothes - just a couple of jumpers and then either pack away till the next year or give to the charity shop.

OH I WISH IT COULD BE CHRISTMAS...EVERY DAAAAAAY
