Nursery: Christmas jumper

AIBU?

So my DC is 2 yrs old and in Nov/Dec got a heap of Christmassy type clothes. Some very obviously Christmas (Santa jumper), some more fair isle type stuff. I bought quite alot of things and so did family - e.g my Mum bought 3 jumpers etc etc. So there is genuinely a lot of it but it all got worn from end of Nov through to New Year but obviously still in very good condition.

Some of the stuff I bought was really lovely and not that cheap - it was from John Lewis and JoJo etc but for me, I always think well lovely clothes for pics over the Christmas period and then it's stuff that can be worn for nursery till it gets wrecked/no longer fits.

So this morning did drop off at nursery and the staff member made a point of saying 'oh a Christmas jumper' quite disparagingly..... to be honest the jumper they went in with today wasn't 'that Christmassy' - it was a red fair isle jumper with small robins on it. But I do fully intend to send DC in with their Santa jumper in the coming weeks.

To be honest, I don't really care - given the tatt and thread bare leggings and stained tops I see other kids sent in wearing, a child going in wearing a lovely warm, clean, non-stained, albeit 'Santa' jumper isn't something I'm going to lose sleep over. It's nursery - clothes get wrecked. They fit. They're good quality - they can be worn for nursery until the weather gets warmer is my attitude. I'm not judging the monstrosity of outfits I see other people sending their kids in because I completely get it - it's nursery - and everything comes home with paint and tomato sauce and glitter all over it.

But I just wondered is this an eye rolling what the hell is that mother playing at - type of thing? Or would most of you just think the same - clearly got a lot of Christmas clothes, it's nursery, the child is 2yrs old - of course it makes sense for the child to wear them?

Or would you be secretly judging me thinking I'm very unreasonable? I'm genuinely planning on my DC getting full use out of these clothes for nursery till March! So be honest - I want to know what I'm up against! Haha.

Yanbu it's so wasteful to not wear something just because it's not 'in season'. If it fits, then use it. My ds uses it and doesn't care. Actually he's being doing a lot of messy stuff so happy to use it for that.

Nope - mine wouldn't be wearing 'Christmas clothes' unless it was during November, December or January. But, i also don't buy loads of Christmassy clothes - just a couple of jumpers and then either pack away till the next year or give to the charity shop.

... What's christmassy about November??

I completely agree. Which is why I don't see an issue with wearing a Christmas jumper to nursery today. I wouldn't have mine wearing anything Christmas related after Christmas, as in the Christmas period.

Why not though?

They're just clothes 🤷‍♀️

The PJs get washed and put away, the kids don't notice because they have lots of nice PJs to wear and usually get new (none Christmas) ones as gifts for Christmas anyway.
I feel the same way about PJs being a matching set. I don't like to see the wrong bottoms put with the wrong top. We all have different standards over different things.

I don't think you can imply matching PJs is a "standard" to have. It rather suggests that somehow matching is better than non matching. Or somehow the child will be at some sort of disadvantage or whatever...

It's a preference, that's all.

EnterNowhere · 03/01/2024 17:27

I always put all the seasonal clothes away or sell them as soon as the celebration is over, I wouldn't judge people who don't though - especially as Christmas was only last week.

FusionChefGeoff · 03/01/2024 17:27

I think people who care about this shit are nuts.

It's clothing; it fits; it's weather appropriate. Wear it.

Why bundle it into the loft for the outside chance of a £3 Vinted sale in 9 months?!

minimadgirl · 03/01/2024 17:34

Depends how christmassy it is. My girls wear their robin 'christmas' cardigans all year through. My 3 year old wore leggings with dinosaurs in santa hats on today, but they arent too obvious.
I'm not going to argue with her fashion choice, but probably would steer her clear of wearing a Santa jumper or something overly Christmassy.

Hankunamatata · 03/01/2024 17:38

Nope no Xmas clothes after xmas but my dc are very black and white. Xmas clothes December only and not after boxing day 😂

booksandbrooks · 03/01/2024 17:43

Kids at our school wear Christmas and Halloween type clothes all year round. I don't know anyone who would raise an eyebrow at it.

peakygold · 03/01/2024 17:44

A jumper to nursery, though? It's like 87 degrees in those rooms.

It's a 'standard' in the same way that some people hoover everyday and others do it once a week. Neither is wrong. The person who hoovers everyday might have windows that haven't been washed in a year, whereas the other might get them done fortnightly. They have different standards for different things.
I have standards over PJs. If I saw a kid in washed up, mismatched or Christmas PJs in June, I'd think they needed some new ones. I wouldn't think they were disadvantaged. Just that their parents didn't have high PJ standards. Which I'm sure they'd admit themselves and is hardly a matter for social services. We're all different.

CantGetInToday · 03/01/2024 17:47

I would send my kid in a Christmas jumper if it was cold enough. I can’t believe anyone would think it an issue.

I certainly intend wearing my fairisle jumpers till march. Including the red one which has Xmas vibes.

Doppelgangers · 03/01/2024 17:49

If I saw a kid in washed up, mismatched or Christmas PJs in June, I'd think they needed some new ones.

See this is weird to me. My first thought would be that's the child choose the outfit themselves or that they were their favorite PJs. Why would you think they needed new pj's if the ones they were wearing were clean and fit well just because they had a Christmas design on them or they didn't match?

Don't your children have favorite things they wear constantly regardless of the season?

jhy · 03/01/2024 17:59

I was extremely tempted to send mine in a red top with Santa on today but didn't and won't. Fair isle jumpers are nice for winter I wouldn't call them strictly Christmas at all.

I did send him in a skeleton top for October / November and did get a remark that Halloween is over although I don't think it's particularly limited to Halloween 🤷🏼‍♀️

You dint have standards because they match.

Standards are about quality or negligence or something.

Putting kids in appropriate bed clothes eg warm ones when it's cold... Ones that aren't too small. Or clean pyjamas. .. Standards.

Preferring them to be in matching festive PJs only in a personally designated timeframe... Preference.

It's just what I'd think. I like nice PJs that are matching and I don't think Christmas ones should be worn after this month. My kids love getting their Christmas bedding and Christmas PJs on in December, it makes it special. If they wore them all year, it wouldn't be the big deal that it is for them.
My kids do have favourite clothes/PJs they like to wear. But they wear stuff that's appropriate to the season. They wouldn't wear a strappy summer dress in Winter, the same as they don't wear Santa clothes in summer. I put their PJs away in the right order because I've bought them a nice pair of PJs, so I don't want them looking thrown together. On that basis if I saw a child who's PJs looked mismatched or inappropriate for the season I.e xmas in June, I'd think they needed new ones.

SleepingStandingUp · 03/01/2024 18:27

It's fine op.

I put the twins t-shirts away because I suspect they'll fit next year although fitted Vs loose like this year.

DS, 8, however has his Angry Birds Xmas t-shirt in general usage all year and wears it when he wants to

It's judge you sending in lovely clothes to get wrecked when they can wear them for more months to come, but I wouldn't judge you sending them in Christmas clothes

Ny24 · 03/01/2024 18:27

Well judging by the comments - I reckon it's about a 50/50 split on whether IABU.

Least I'm more prepared for any further raised eyebrows 😅

Last year in May my LO was wearing a Christmas jumper - wasn’t thick enough for the winter months but was perfect for spring. I don’t care what anyone thinks

My grandkids wear their Christmas PJs all year round. Can't afford to buy them just for the season.

Never understood people only wearing them for two weeks. Same as say Children In Need , twins wore Pudsey PJ's for 18 months.

I agree, except for the too small, not necessarily. Too small in summer are fine to me if they are just ankle freezers but otherwise fit. I buy new in autumn as needed.

Sunnydays0101 · 03/01/2024 18:45

I’m not sure why you bought so many Christmas themed clothes. I’m not sure why you’re surprised that someone made a comment in passing either about wearing a Christmas jumper in a January.
You’ve taken the time to write here of how well you dress your child and to rubbish how other parents dress there children. So you’re pass remarkable too.

Fern86 · 03/01/2024 18:56

My LO gets Christmas jumpers passed down from 9 nephews and nieces.
Still decent and another two on the way the jumpers will get packed up to be passed on again!

the kids get new pyjamas for Christmas Eve but wear them until they outgrow them.
My LO is still wearing Halloween clothes because bats are cool lol
we either keep wearing clothes or pass them on.

tiredmama23 · 03/01/2024 19:07

Sorry but the glaring irony of this statement:

I'm not judging the monstrosity of outfits I see other people sending their kids in because I completely get it

Was there ever a more judgemental description of an outfit than "monstrosity" 😂😂
