Car parked in my assigned spot, what else can I do?

A parking one???

I live in a compound with several blocks of flats and assigned parking, clearly displayed in white painted number corresponding to your flat on each spot. There are however no lines separating the spaces, it relies on common sense Confused to park in a way that allows you to exit with a car parked next to you and vice versa.

I live in a section of 6 blocks, with 3 flats on either side of the road and parking spaces along the front of the buildings in sets of 2 (with hedges between).

In case it matters, I am the only one with a car in my set of 2 spaces, and we have visitor's parking that can accommodate 6 cars.

Since arriving home from a trip abroad 3 days ago, there has been a car parked in my spot. Not only that, but it has been so badly parked with a huge gap between the passenger side and the hedge that another car cannot fit into the neighbour's space.

I left a note wedged under the rear tire of their car as it's been raining nonstop since I arrived, saying that they were parked in my spot and please can park elsewhere. Btw, I was able to park in the visitors just fine, there is always space.

The next morning I left for work to find that they re-parked the car closer to the hedge, but still sat in my spot. I went off to work and did an overnight so only returned tonight.

The car is still in my spot, and once again badly parked so I can't even park next to them if I wanted. I'm at my wits end. How can people be so selfish? I've had to park near the top of the compound and lug my bags back and forth in the rain, but it shouldn't even matter as I should be able to park in my own spot!

I've sent an email off to the property management company but don't have much faith in even receiving a response or if they can even do anything.

What else can I do?

  • I rang the buzzers on the building in front of the space (which is the building next to me) and my own building. Only 4 people answered and none of them know who the car belongs to.
  • I also tried the car doors in the hopes of setting off an alarm and getting the fucker outside Blush but they don't have one.

Any other ideas?

Set the car on fire.

I don't live in the UK but where I live, allocated spaces have signs with the car registration number on.. I don't know why this is more effective than space numbers ..

You need to chill the fuck out. There are plenty other spaces available for you to park in and the car will move eventually.

She owns the space.

Do you loan out your garage/driveway (if you have one) for any random to use

And you're starting off the New Year in a charming manner. Why so agressive?

@PamelaParis, you need to move your car put of op's space...

I'd hate that. Apart from the possibilities of somebody spoofing your plate and putting it on their vehicle or finding some other kind of ID theft or using it to track when you're away, what about if you have more than one car, or you have several visitors or carers?

If a space is rightfully mine, I want to be fully able to park any appropriate vehicle in it or allow others visiting me to do so at my discretion.

What kind of brainless moron would start driving when they couldn't see out of the front window? Do you do this? The olive oil (which was presumably hypothetical anyway) is no more dangerous than the very natural fact that most windscreens are opaque when it rains or when the internal condensation happens. You have to clear it before moving!

Just moved your bloody car Pamela you've been rumbled

LizzieFromTheForest · 01/01/2024 23:38

@TinkerTiger I hope you get it sorted. I second the idea to block them in. Maybe set up a camera in the car/on the dashboard, to catch them in case they try and key your car. I can't see that happening though because they won't be able to escape (as their car will be blocked in,) and it will be obvious it's them.

Good luck. I have had to deal with some arseholes when it comes to bad/inconsiderate parking. Every one of the last 5 properties me and DH have lived in (in 26 years since we first bought) have had driveways, and in every single one, we have spent roughly 50% of the time having to tolerate arsewipes parking opposite our driveway even though they have a driveway. Entitled, dicks!

They do it because they struggle to get in and out of their driveway (WELL LEARN THEN, LIKE I HAD TO - AND LIKE EVERYONE ELSE DOES..!) OR because they're going out later and it's easier to just leave it on the road. No matter that it's making other peoples lives awkward then?

Last house we were about a decade ago, the woman across the road parked her cunty car opposite our driveway, making it nigh on impossible to get in or out, (even though she had a THREE car wide driveway!) so the kids could use the front garden/the wide 3 car wide driveway as a playground/to play footy.'

Boiled my piss it did. DH did mention it was making us struggle to get in the driveway, and she said 'aww don't worry about it... ' Silly cow. We were saying SHE is the problem. What the hell does 'don't worry about it' mean?!

Anyway, one day after she had been doing this for some 2 months, a big wagon with a skip on the back came down the road, swerved to avoid a cat, and smashed into her car. Wrote it off. She has only got basic insurance, and had made a claim for a new car a year before after writing that off in an accident that was her fault, so the insurance company wouldn't settle right away, and there was no courtesy car, so she had no car for about 3 weeks.

When she got another car, she started putting on the driveway. LOL!

Check if it's taxed/got an MOT.

Spomsored · 01/01/2024 23:47

Could you put a notice on the entrance doors of the adjacent blocks of flats? If it's someone who lives there they might respond.

41quid · 01/01/2024 23:54

Stolen cars are often stashed for 24 or 48 hours to see if they have a tracker. The police don't care and will use the 'it's private property, civil matter, nothing we can do' argument.
It's important NOT to damage the car as someone else's camera might capture that, however, a Denver Boot-type security device which immobilises the car will bring matters to the parking company/cf's attention fairly quickly.

That's my next plan, to tape notes to the doors of the buildings.

To those who have mentioned tax/MOT, yes car is taxed. No MOT as it's a 73 plate.

Those bollard things that people have, how easy is it to get them fitted, what proof do they need that the space is yours and can you get them fitted at short notice?

What I am thinking is can you get a bollard put in behind this car, blocking them in. Then take your time releasing it. After that leave it in place when you are not using the space

PurpleChrayne · 02/01/2024 00:15

Bounce it.

Denver boots on private land were outlawed in 2012: https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2012/9/section/54

This was effective for my dp who was having similar parking problems.

Thank you for that, very useful information. I note the following:

(4) A person who is entitled to remove a vehicle cannot commit an offence under this section in relation to that vehicle

Do you know what the definition of a 'person who is entitled to remove a vehicle' is? It would be interesting (for the OP) to know if it requires a specific license or registration.
