Midnight fireworks

AIBU to think that neighbours should warn other neighbours that they are letting off midnight fireworks? I’m talking quiet village setting here not a busy town or city. I genuinely think it’s really inconsiderate and rude.

As annoying as dog shit and barking is it cannot be compared to deaths of dogs and lots of wildlife caused by fireworks.

I have heard of quite a few horses injured when they have run into fences when scared by fireworks. Also some that have had miscarriages caused by fear. Also sheep panicking and being injured.

So I think we should be worried about fireworks

I can’t comment on the wildlife, though I doubt birds, foxes etc are much affected by fireworks. And I suspect that most rural communities understand either not to use fireworks or are prepared for them if they keep horses or livestock.

And of course dogs attack wildlife, horses and sheep and cause more far more damage to them than fireworks ever will. All year round.

The miseries caused by dogs in towns and in the country far, far outweigh an occasional firework-induced heart attack in a dog (which must be sick anyway, surely?).

Clearly a lot of British residents would rather be in Gaza or Ukraine and therefore seek to replicate the experience here.

Fireworks were meant to be for the Millennium. Not every year.

I am with the miserable pp's who say private sales of fireworks should be banned. Not only because of the noise nuisance but also because of the air pollution.

How silly. 😳

Perhaps dogs disliking fireworks is yet another reason not to own dogs in suburban areas. People can't be expected to pussyfoot around pet dogs that are kept in unsuitable environments.

Not all dogs dislike fireworks. Our two raised their heads slightly last night when they started then went back to sleep.

I'm with the 'people are too stupid to have fireworks' brigade and think they should only be legal to purchase by companies that have to get licences. The government ignores all the petitions about this subject year on year.. it's pathetic.

So therefore people can legally have fireworks, so why oh why do they get so much grief! Save that for people breaking the law?

margotrose · 01/01/2024 15:44

It's not like it happens everyday.

People have celebrated the New Year for centuries. You know there's going to be fireworks so plan for it in advance - white noise machines, ear plugs, blackout blinds etc.

I used to have to get up at 5am on NYD for work - it sucks, I get it, but it's one day out of 365. It's not the end of the world if you're a bit tired.

Guess that depends on your job though, I don't want a surgeon or a pilot etc who is 'a little bit tired'.

I don't care about 30 minutes of fireworks at midnight, what I do hate is wanker neighbours setting them off since the 29th.

Private fireworks shouldn't be allowed.

I have a dog and love fireworks! My dog also loves fireworks, as in she didn't raise her head!

So basically then it's reasonable that at any time of day from October to January there will be fireworks. So does this mean my dog needs to be permanently medicated? Or maybe we should just have her PTS because we won't want to inconvenience people from letting off their noisy and polluting little toys would we.

Well yes, fireworks are allowed to be let off within certain times, it's legal and therefore people will do it.

flawlessandfearless · 01/01/2024 17:19

@Goodlard I'm aware of the legal position but thanks so much for your help.

Scalottia · 01/01/2024 17:21

How did yet another thread on MN turn into a dog bashing thread? MN is fucking bonkers honestly when it comes to dogs. And I don't even have a dog or like them that much but honestly, get over yourselves.

I can't help you 🤷‍♀️! It's the facts, I'm so sorry you don't like them, but it's the facts.

Because some pet dog owners queue up to denounce anything that affects their furry ‘best friends’.

Because anyone who posts a fireworks thread ends up with of a barrage of my poor dog replies. Then people get fed up with people whingeing about their poor dog

Nobody cares about your dog just as much as you and your dog don't care about others.

'Noisy and polluting little toys' is quite a good way of describing pet dogs actually.

Rewis · 01/01/2024 17:29

On a random Tuesday in February, yes. On NYE, nope. It is to be expected.

Many things are legal but it doesn't mean they should be. Smoking for one - of anything.

I very much doubt that surgeons and pilots always go to work having had the perfect amount of sleep, even when it's not NYE.

There are always fireworks at this time of year - it's on you as a shift worker/pet owner/light sleeper to prepare for that, imo. It's not the job of strangers to fit around your lifestyle/choices.

So what's the answer? Whinging on FB and MN, that in your opinion it shouldn't be legal?

For everyone of you, there is another happy it's legal, for both smoking and fireworks.

XL Bully dogs maybe, yeah. Otherwise a horrible comment.

Scalottia · 01/01/2024 17:58

Maybe not @margotrose but it would certainly be a nicer society if people thought just a little more about how their actions affect others, and perhaps instead of setting off private fireworks for 5+ hours (like in my street last night) perhaps they could just, you know, be a tad more unselfish and reduce that to one hour or so. But I guess it's difficult for selfish, self-centered people to give one iota of thought to others.

I agree that it would be nice, but while fireworks are legal, they're not really doing anything wrong.

One person's idea of disruptive and is another's idea of great fun.
