Midnight fireworks

AIBU to think that neighbours should warn other neighbours that they are letting off midnight fireworks? I’m talking quiet village setting here not a busy town or city. I genuinely think it’s really inconsiderate and rude.

I’m very fortunate (like most British citizens) and have never lived in a war zone. I’ve always lived in nice areas - where I live now is beautiful, large conservation area, oldest village in the county, outstanding primary school ect.
I think due to the proximity of the loud bangs the children woke up- very unusual for them to wake. I’m taking next door but one here with huge fireworks. We haven’t lived here long so I’ll keep quiet. I think what they have done is rude.

Our gardens are too small yet every year boom bang this year they hit the car 🙄

Chickitychick · 01/01/2024 14:03

I let them stay up until 10pm for a family party on Dec and the next few days of out of routines was not worth it. Maybe next year?

Want the internal cctv as proof (yes I’m also one of those people)

Do you not have a calendar?

Chickitychick · 01/01/2024 14:06

Next door but one but modern estate (small gardens) so very close to the bedroom on the back on that side.

We had them going off all around here last night at midnight for about an hour which is bad enough but not quite as bad as millenium year here when they let them off every 20 minutes until 5am . We're also quiet village or we used to be. Just seen on the local page on fb that there will be more let off at tea time tonight, wtf for!!! So now I have to drug my dog again to keep him calm, selfish bastards!

LenaLamont · 01/01/2024 14:20

Don’t be a fun sponge, OP.

It’s been 24 years since the Millennium made it popular to have fireworks on NYE. At least they aren’t the beautiful but unsafe sky lanterns that caused damage to wildlife and risked starting fires

Gem7555 · 01/01/2024 14:22

Fireworks are all very well unless you need to be up at 4.30 for a 12 hour shift. Trouble is people assume that everyone else is up partying and no one is working on New Year's Day

TeenLifeMum · 01/01/2024 14:27

We watched the fireworks from our window and enjoyed the free displays. I used to live near the army ranges in Hythe, Kent, so lots of gun shot sounds. People even had dogs and somehow they coped. We’ve clearly been lucky as none of my pets have been bothered by fireworks but ddog is a gun dog.

I agree it’s polite to notify neighbours on random days by nye and bonfire night are the times you don’t need to surely.

You would look batshit crazy if you said anything about fireworks on NYE!

But plenty do bark and foul. I suggest we sort that out before we worry about fireworks.

As annoying as dog shit and barking is it cannot be compared to deaths of dogs and lots of wildlife caused by fireworks.

I have heard of quite a few horses injured when they have run into fences when scared by fireworks. Also some that have had miscarriages caused by fear. Also sheep panicking and being injured.

So I think we should be worried about fireworks

all the important essential workers work on all the bank holidays but they don't count obviously as long as people can let off bombs in public because the calendar tells them to.

LangMayYerLumReek2024 · 01/01/2024 15:40

@chaosmaker

Do you think the world should live in silence with only mute celebrations?

It's not like it happens everyday.

People have celebrated the New Year for centuries. You know there's going to be fireworks so plan for it in advance - white noise machines, ear plugs, blackout blinds etc.

I used to have to get up at 5am on NYD for work - it sucks, I get it, but it's one day out of 365. It's not the end of the world if you're a bit tired.

Clearly a lot of British residents would rather be in Gaza or Ukraine and therefore seek to replicate the experience here.

Fireworks were meant to be for the Millennium. Not every year.

I am with the miserable pp's who say private sales of fireworks should be banned. Not only because of the noise nuisance but also because of the air pollution.

But they're not banned, so 🤷‍♀️

margotrose · 01/01/2024 16:46

Fireworks for New Year have been a "thing" for much longer than that.

flawlessandfearless · 01/01/2024 16:46

And they're off again. Are fireworks to be expected on NYD too?

flawlessandfearless · 01/01/2024 16:46

I always expect fireworks for a week or so either side of a big event like Bonfire Night or NYD. That's always been the norm wherever I've lived.

flawlessandfearless · 01/01/2024 16:46

Yep! Still parties going on, still celebrating people, maybe birthdays as well?

Cosyblankets · 01/01/2024 16:49

Chickitychick · 01/01/2024 00:28

Ok so I’m unreasonable! I’ll admit defeat. First new year in this house and I’m shocked / never had these issues in other places before. I will be better prepared next year by not being here! Can’t take screaming woken up and scared kids again. All the poor dogs in this area too. I would never do any garden event and not warn neighbours - even like a birthday bbq in summer.
Lesson learnt.

How old are the kids?

flawlessandfearless · 01/01/2024 16:51

So basically then it's reasonable that at any time of day from October to January there will be fireworks. So does this mean my dog needs to be permanently medicated? Or maybe we should just have her PTS because we won't want to inconvenience people from letting off their noisy and polluting little toys would we.

chaosmaker · 01/01/2024 16:59

I'm with the 'people are too stupid to have fireworks' brigade and think they should only be legal to purchase by companies that have to get licences. The government ignores all the petitions about this subject year on year.. it's pathetic.
