Midnight fireworks

AIBU to think that neighbours should warn other neighbours that they are letting off midnight fireworks? I’m talking quiet village setting here not a busy town or city. I genuinely think it’s really inconsiderate and rude.

OP posts:

I think they are just to be expected at midnight on NYE, unfortunately.

However, for the first time in as long as I can remember there were no fireworks around me last night - a very welcome change.

margotrose · 01/01/2024 08:52

The fact that it's New Years' Eve is your warning, surely?

I have a dog who doesn't like fireworks but the world doesn't revolve around me. I know they're going to happen and prep him and the house accordingly.

He slept through them last night for the first time in years!

HoHoHoliday · 01/01/2024 08:59

KissTheRains · 01/01/2024 00:13

They've been going off near me since it got dark. The dogs a nervous wreck.
I fucking hate fireworks being let off by Fuckwits in their gardens, selfish inconsiderate bunch of cunts.

Fireworks should be banned from sale to general public. Professional, organised displays only.

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

And yes OP, I agree it's considerate to let your neighbours know if you plan to set some off regardless of what day it is.
Fireworks on NYE is a newer thing, when I was growing up it never happened.

notanothernana · 01/01/2024 09:01

My dog was a mess last night, all night. I have had about 4 hours sleep.

They should not be sold to the public, or only silent ones. So many animals suffer so that some people can enjoy 5 minutes of fireworks.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 01/01/2024 09:09

COL crisis, what COL crisis.

What a weird comment. You surely don't think the COL crisis affects absolutely everyone to the extent that they can't buy a few fireworks?Confused

Ok so I’m unreasonable! I’ll admit defeat. First new year in this house and I’m shocked / never had these issues in other places before. I will be better prepared next year by not being here! Can’t take screaming woken up and scared kids again. All the poor dogs in this area too. I would never do any garden event and not warn neighbours - even like a birthday bbq in summer.
Lesson learnt.

Why not let your kids stay up and watch the fireworks? It's one night and they won't be going to school in the morning.

cornonthesnob · 01/01/2024 09:29

Your kids woke up screaming and scared? 😂

Course they did

Melodysmum12 · 01/01/2024 09:30

If it wasn’t NYE yes….

RampantIvy · 01/01/2024 09:31

Some fireworks are unnecessarily loud. If the next door neighbour was setting them off I can see why a sleeping child would wake up scared.

RatatouillePie · 01/01/2024 09:34

YANBU.

Yes, it's NYE so fireworks are to be expected, but if neighbours are doing a display in their garden it's common courtesy to let direct neighbours know.

Manners cost nothing.

itsmyp4rty · 01/01/2024 09:35

I'm with you OP. Why can't people celebrate in ways that don't impact everyone living around them? It's just selfish and entitled. No one needs a crappy garden firework display, just watch the decent ones on tv or go to something properly organised.

AgentJohnson · 01/01/2024 09:35

Do not come to the Netherlands!!!!!!! I have been hearing mini explosion's since Boxing Day. They sell fireworks in supermarkets here. DD (17) refuses to leave the house between 30 dec and New Year’s Day. The only upside is we get a fabulous free firework display from the comfort of our living room.

You’ve never heard fireworks on NYE before in any place you’ve lived, until now? Really?!

Zebedee999 · 01/01/2024 09:41

Fair enough the bright lights etc but why are fireworks that make massive bangs allowed? Can't the law compromise and only allow silent fireworks?

mydogisthebest · 01/01/2024 09:46

There were none where I live at midnight which was great. Some moron was letting them off at 7pm though. Thought the whole point of fireworks on NYE was to let them off at midnight

10% agree with this!

SawYouLookingButChoseToIgnoreYou · 01/01/2024 10:09

Some morons round our way were letting them off at 8pm last night

mumda · 01/01/2024 10:09

AllIsWellish · 01/01/2024 00:18

Wouldn't mind if it was just midnight but they've been going off for hours here

All evening here too.
Plus over the last few evenings.

I assume the cost of living hasn't hit for some.

daffodilandtulip · 01/01/2024 10:43

Well after my 12:30 moan, I'd like to continue by moaning that they were going off until 2am. Then someone else started at 2am, then again at five fucking fifteen! Just why?!

daffodilandtulip · 01/01/2024 10:44

*someone else started at 4am

ElevenSeven · 01/01/2024 10:45

Not at NY, no. I’d expect fireworks at NY.

Any other weekend; a heads up would be polite.

Not sure what difference a warning would make
to outcome anyway though.

Girlsjustwannahavefundamentalrights · 01/01/2024 10:53

I don't mind fireworks up till about 12.30. but then we had them going off intermittently between 2am and 3.30am just as i dropped off, got woke up again. Just curious, don't noise laws apply on nye?

Girlsjustwannahavefundamentalrights · 01/01/2024 10:54

Maybe the 5.15 was retaliation for the 2am ones?

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 01/01/2024 10:54

I’d have no problem with a ban on domestic fireworks, because of safety.

But upset pets is not a valid reason. I have to put up with barking dogs and dog shit on the pavements and in the parks all year round. Those things really are anti-social. A ban on fireworks and dogs would seem about right.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 01/01/2024 10:56

I wonder how old the people on this thread going on about how you should EXPECT fireworks on NYE are?
I was past 30 before this became commonplace around the country.

Before the millennium it was really only large cities that had a firework display on NYE. It was a gradual thing that more and more people started letting them off at home. It's definitely got a LOT worse in just the last few years too. Especially starting earlier and earlier in the evening.

They're like children. Can't even wait until midnight (or even the right night in some cases)

When did people get like this?

Fireworks are boring af too. Seen one display - seen em all.
