Midnight fireworks

AIBU to think that neighbours should warn other neighbours that they are letting off midnight fireworks? I’m talking quiet village setting here not a busy town or city. I genuinely think it’s really inconsiderate and rude.

@MistyGreenAndBlue I'm mid 40s and it's definitely gone mad the last few years. It's not even an occasion anymore, and they'll even let them off in the summer when it's still light. I think if we didn't have to listen to the anti social ones that go on for months and months, we'd be happy to hear them for half an hour at new year.

BIossomtoes · 01/01/2024 11:00

I wonder how old the people on this thread going on about how you should EXPECT fireworks on NYE are?

margotrose · 01/01/2024 11:01

@MistyGreenAndBlue I'm 35 and fireworks at midnight on NYE have always been a "thing". I was raised in the sticks too - nowhere near a city.

kitsuneghost · 01/01/2024 11:08

I know!!!! who would have expected fireworks on hogmanay?!?!?

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 01/01/2024 00:08

On NYE YABU but not on other nights of the year.

And 5th November (and organised displays Saturdays from September in Sussex)

RampantIvy · 01/01/2024 11:14

I was past 30 before this became commonplace around the country

Same here. I remember going to a friend's house for NYE in the early 90s. He let one single rocket off at midnight, and it was the first time I had seen anyone let off a firework on NYE.

Bloody hell. Let the people have their fun, eh.

I agree. We set fire to local tree and 10 of us scream in unison while my DH shoots a cannon into the night sky. There is no other way to have fun after all!!

AngelsandAliens · 01/01/2024 11:19

Oh come on ! It’s NY! Do people grumble about everything these days.

Suburbs for me and for my entire childhood and 20s I never heard of local fireworks on NYE.
My DD is 30 now and she agrees with me. It wasn't a thing at all when she was growing up.

Don't give 'em ideas 😂

VolvoFan · 01/01/2024 11:24

It's NYE, so that's the warning. On the other hand, I don't care one jot, they can all piss off. Midnight or not. They can all piss off. I'm a bit weak at the moment owing to a horrific miscarriage, so I will not apologise for my attitude about the damn things. I agree with you, OP.

Ok so I’m unreasonable! I’ll admit defeat. First new year in this house and I’m shocked / never had these issues in other places before. I will be better prepared next year by not being here! Can’t take screaming woken up and scared kids again. All the poor dogs in this area too. I would never do any garden event and not warn neighbours - even like a birthday bbq in summer.
Lesson learnt.

I think you've got a point with something out the ordinary like a BBQ or a loud party for a neighbours 18th for example but I'd always take fireworks on NYE as a given.

Giggorata · 01/01/2024 11:27

I rather enjoyed it last night. I get a great view out of my window. I expect others in the village didn’t, but I agree that there are certain nights when they are to be expected.
When we had a dog that was afraid of fireworks and storms, we sedated him and basically cuddled him, poor lad. The storms were much more problematic that the fireworks because of the unpredictability.
My labs are quite interested in all the bangs and clearly wish they were outside retrieving!

mrsjg · 01/01/2024 11:29

I don't mind fireworks on NYE, I think it's a given nowadays. What I don't understand is, in the past we have had people set them off at 11.30pm - surely you can wait half an hour?

Is it a load of wee 70 year olds running up and down the street setting of fireworks just to annoy the 'youngsters'

PuttingDownRoots · 01/01/2024 11:45

How many neighbours should you warn? They can be heard several streets away...

I quite like organised fireworks. But would happily have them limited to people with a license.

Well, it was where I grew up. There would be a big organised display in the local park as well as one in pretty much every single surrounding village. There would always be a few neighbours setting them off at home too.

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 01/01/2024 10:54

I’d have no problem with a ban on domestic fireworks, because of safety.

But upset pets is not a valid reason. I have to put up with barking dogs and dog shit on the pavements and in the parks all year round. Those things really are anti-social. A ban on fireworks and dogs would seem about right.

Pets die from heart attacks due to fireworks, it's not a small thing. And no dog should be barking and causing a nuisance or fouling the path.

But plenty do bark and foul. I suggest we sort that out before we worry about fireworks.

I get it - I have a dog who, in the past, has spent NYE cowering and shaking under the bed. But at the end of the day he's my responsibility, not anyone else's, and I'd never expect anyone else not to have fireworks because of him.

There are loads of things you can do to protect pets from fireworks if you plan in advance.

Shock horror…Some people aren’t too badly affected by it. Mind blowing stuff right?!

@Evanesy

And a Happy New Year to you as well. 😂

melj1213 · 01/01/2024 13:32

Fireworks at midnight on NYE I don't mind as they are expected and can be prepared for but I was petsitting for my parents' dog and cats last night and there were fireworks set off randomly from about 4pm when it got dark - there would be a burst of fireworks for 5/10 mins and then nothing for a while then another lot being set off ... the dog and cats needed to be let out for wees during evening but I could never guarantee that another burst of fireworks wouldn't go off while they were out in the garden.

There was no rhyme or schedule to them so I couldn't prepare beyond having the dog in her stress jacket, all blinds closed, all lights on and the TV on loud from 5pm and keeping the cats shut in all night - they're housecats but they're used to being able to go in and out as they please so being locked in the house, especially with a stressed and barking dog stressed them out too and they both ran to hide - it's been 12hrs since midnight and one of them has only just been coaxed off the top of a very high wardrobe in the last hour or so.

AnotherSaturdayNight · 01/01/2024 13:56

Loads of fireworks going off around where we live. It’s to be expected on NYE, but they were going off for hours. Our dog wanted a wee but wouldn’t go out. Can’t imagine wildlife enjoying all the noise. Must be terrifying for the animals outside.

My dog and his dog friend like fireworks! They watched from inside yesterday.
