Midnight fireworks

AIBU to think that neighbours should warn other neighbours that they are letting off midnight fireworks? I’m talking quiet village setting here not a busy town or city. I genuinely think it’s really inconsiderate and rude.

There were fireworks going on all round me, as normal.

Then some fool let off one of those that are designed for public displays. Fine if you own a park. However this is a row of very small gardens and it skipped over the nighbours and was flashing and lighting up the entire back of my house, on the sodding patio and catio.

Poor little cat had been fine for the first time ever and hadn't hid under the chair this time, and then a huge bloody bang right outside her window.

If you are going to let fireworks off in a tiny garden at least have the brain to let them off in your own sodding garden and not set fire to neighbours garden furniture. and melt their windows.

Nonimai · 01/01/2024 00:45

We gave our nervous dog doggie Prozac, zonked her out. The fireworks were so many,so close and so loud that my youngest dog, who is usually ok, has had a fit or fainted, hit the ground head first, lost control of his bladder. He came round after a minute. The vetsemergency line is busy and has been since 12. Each year the fireworks seem to get louder. We are in a small village. It’s rubbish.

"Can’t take screaming woken up and scared kids again."

Your children woke up screaming and scared? Really? Goodness, lucky they didn't grow up in a warzone like some of us. Have they never heard or seen fireworks before? Don't you celebrate NYE with them? Our children stay up. On other nights, my children sleep through fireworks being let off at night, are yours such light sleepers that noise outside wakes them? I must be lucky!

Honeyglazed · 01/01/2024 00:34

Totally agree it’s just common courtesy

But on mumsnet yabu and should expect fireworks with no prior warning 🤷‍♀️

Well on NYE or Guy Fawkes night, yes you should!

And where does it stop? What about the houses across the road, over the garden or in the next street?

Are they supposed to knock on every door in the area or take out a full page advert in the local newspaper?

TheWorstWeek · 01/01/2024 00:49

It's to be expected with it being NYE, I'm afraid. I don't think anyone needs to let you know that they'll be letting off fireworks.

Having said that I really wish they bloody wouldn't. They started at about 10.30 here and I've only just gotten up off the floor from comforting my dog who was completely quaking in fright from midnight. She never used to be bothered by them but they scare her really badly in her old age, and they were SO loud tonight. Woke me and DH up too. Kids managed to sleep through them though!

Ok so I’m unreasonable! I’ll admit defeat. First new year in this house and I’m shocked / never had these issues in other places before. I will be better prepared next year by not being here! Can’t take screaming woken up and scared kids again. All the poor dogs in this area too. I would never do any garden event and not warn neighbours - even like a birthday bbq in summer.
Lesson learnt.

Move to the moon! You'll be safe there!!

Lilacdressinggown · 01/01/2024 00:54

I love fireworks!
At NYE you should expect them. It’s you that are being unreasonable OP.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 01/01/2024 00:57

I can deal with NYE fireworks at midnight. I’m getting really fucking pissed off with the cunts at the top of the road who have been letting them off solidly since 11pm.

So an hour early causes such venom??

Thementalloadisreal · 01/01/2024 01:00

Fucking hate fireworks.

Normally, if you got wind of a neighbour mucking about with explosives in their garden you’d call the police.

For two hours solid (still going on now)? Yes.

Where are you going to go? Mars? It's NYE, there will be celebrations and fireworks everywhere. You could move to China I suppose, but you'd have to move on again in February - their NY is even more explosive-happy than ours 😂

RampantIvy · 01/01/2024 01:05

It is perfectly possible to have pretty fireworks without the really loud bangs, and I don't understand why they have to be so loud these days.

christmaspawpaws · 01/01/2024 01:08

8am someone set them off the other day
I was having a lie in and woke up all "WFT?!"
Thought I had massively overslept!

They wouldn’t be so exciting without the noise.

RampantIvy · 01/01/2024 01:47

I disagree @Flossflower, and it is much kinder to animals.

florasmama · 01/01/2024 02:04

I think I may be the only person to say yes and no to this. Obviously yes it is NYE but if your direct neighbour is setting off fireworks as opposed to someone across town then that does make a significant difference if say you have a baby or animals that are horribly frightened of fireworks. If the neighbours know you have any of those then maybe it'd be nice for them to just give you a heads up. Then again though, I'm a miserable bugger and would just rather no bloody fireworks at all, or silent ones 😂 I think they're a waste of bloody money and I feel for the wildlife out there is probably petrified when it sounds like WW3 is kicking off

FlyingCherub · 01/01/2024 02:06

I'd dropped off to sleep and got woken up by what I thought was armageddon at 12.30pm. My heart is still racing now, hence being on here. I'm somewhat embarrassed to say that I shouted OH DO FUCK OFF out of the window... but it did stop it. Going to have to walk the dogs tomorrow with a scarf covering my face Blush

Passingthethyme · 01/01/2024 02:06

It's NYE ffs. Gosh some people really are miserable party poopers.

hilariousnamehere · 01/01/2024 02:07

Midnight on NYE is fine. Here they unfortunately started at 5pm this evening and I've just heard another volley of massive bangs in the road behind my house at almost 2am while trying to go to bed. Thank god for speakers all over the house, I drown it out with music for my cats who hate it and my next door neighbour is very understanding of the music on NYE and bonfire night/week.

Cats had a 3pm curfew because I wasn't risking them being out when it kicked off at 5!

But I do resent the hours and hours of unpredictable bangs on 31 Dec, surely half an hour over actual midnight would be fine?! And agree it should be organised proper displays only.

MadeOfAllWork · 01/01/2024 02:13

I hate fireworks but it’s to be expected on New Year’s Eve.

blackpanth · 01/01/2024 02:19

Yabu

Goodlard · 01/01/2024 08:29

@Lastqueenofscotland2 they hadn't been going off for two hours when you posted though!

Must have been a tremendous display to last two hours!

LlynTegid · 01/01/2024 08:42

I think fireworks should be organised displays only, and limited to a few times a year. New Year's Eve would be one though.

Given what you read about some small villages, what the OP experienced is not surprising.
