Personally I think he's great and he's clearly living his best life but the demographic of the crowd. Middle aged white men and women. The lack of diversity is quite shocking.

OP posts:
FrownedUpon · 31/12/2023 23:50

Tedious. Most Rick Astley fans will be white and Middle Aged. Is that a surprise to you?

KarenNotAKaren · 31/12/2023 23:50

LubaLuca · 31/12/2023 23:48

Luck of the draw, surely. The organisers couldn't exactly put a percentage of tickets aside for people who aren't white and middle-aged.

I’ve already asked OP and the other ‘shocked’ MNers what should have been done but had no offer of an answer. I can’t think of anything other than some creepy dystopian style rounding up of minorities, or forcing a load of unwilling people to watch him at the expense of his true fans.

Totally bonkers thinking!

Roiesin57 · 31/12/2023 23:50

Why does it matter? People like what they like. There is no rule that an artist has to have a certain percentage of different cultures or skin colours in their audience 🙄

JaffaCake24 · 31/12/2023 23:51

Rick is lovely and his fans grew up with him when diversity was not a thing.

Perhaps he’s just a product of his time. A dear fossil. And that’s ok. Things are changing. We don’t have to all be diversified, all of the time.

For instance where I live, there is a church and every single church-goer to the church is black. I’m sure they’d welcome me or anyone else white with open arms. They seem like a lovely crowd. Gracious and thoughtful. But I don’t feel the need to balance things up with a bit of whiteness. It’s fine. Let’s just keep loving and accepting each other and keep trying to do our best.

Singleandproud · 31/12/2023 23:51

@Iam4eels he was chosen to celebrate his 40 years in the music business or something along those lines

DoubleShotEspresso · 31/12/2023 23:51

DP just said "well at least they didn't wheel out Gary Barlow" ...

He normally gets everywhere

KarenNotAKaren · 31/12/2023 23:52

Better not tell OP the kind of person that goes to see Daniel O’Donnell and Cliff Richard

Yes to do that awful boring talk-singing he does!

At least Robbie Williams has the good grace to perform like he’s still on Speed!

the80sweregreat · 31/12/2023 23:53

His of an age I guess
I'm a fan and he rocked Glastonbury this year too
Great voice !

PuppyMonkey · 31/12/2023 23:53

Presume all the people who didn’t want to see Rick Astley on NYE have gone and done something else that they do want to do?

(is it live?)

the80sweregreat · 31/12/2023 23:53

BIG old Rick Astley fan here
!!

Singleandproud · 31/12/2023 23:53

I'm glad it's not Robbie, I'm sure he was on something when he did it. Sam Ryder was great

TheScenicWay · 31/12/2023 23:53

If it helps, I'm not white and am enjoying his stuff.

watcherintherye · 31/12/2023 23:54

So what do you propose to do with all the artists who don’t attract a diverse enough audience? Are they not to be allowed to put on concerts? Or maybe there should be a quota system for audiences, but how would you enforce it if young black people downright refused to buy tickets because, maybe, they just don’t like Rick Astley?

All black people should be buying tickets to artists they don’t like so that white people can feel comfortable and pretend they live in an equal world, donchanow

Squidge123 · 31/12/2023 23:55

It's not live, it was filmed recently same as the National Lottery Big Bash that was on earlier.

Rod Stewart on Jools Holland was shocking 🤣

Saw Rod in a restaurant during the hottest week of the year this summer. He had on bejewelled, platform espadrilles. Now that was shocking.

Tilllly · 31/12/2023 23:56

Wish I'd seen rod stewart now

<<<misses point of thread>>>

SoupDragon · 31/12/2023 23:56

If that's who bought the tickets, what are they supposed to do? Shojld they have vetted ticket sales somehow?

He"s a middle aged "bland" pop singer from the 80s. That's who his main audience is likely to be.

TheThingIsYeah · 31/12/2023 23:56

Babymamamama · 31/12/2023 23:42

Yanbu. Isn’t it odd? Considering it’s at the Camden Roundhouse in one of the most diverse cities in the UK. Where did they advertise the tickets? Daily Mail?

The Daily Mail?! You mean actually give members of the public a chance to attend? God no. This is a BBC programme remember, so the audience will be employees and their families I bet.

the80sweregreat · 31/12/2023 23:57

I saw Rod at the old wembley !
He was fab , love his voice too
