Personally I think he's great and he's clearly living his best life but the demographic of the crowd. Middle aged white men and women. The lack of diversity is quite shocking.

Every time I hear Never Gonna Give You Up I think Pete Waterman can get another train set now 😂

Haha, someone should make a StarStories based on this. Pete, in his attic, getting excited whenever one of the SAW acts comes back into the limelight.
"What, Sinitta is guest staring on eastenders and performing So Macho in the Vic? Great, I'll be able to get that miniature tree set for my track"
"What, Kylie and Jason really are getting back together? Motherfecker, I can finally get that 1st edition Hornby"

Babla · 01/01/2024 01:54

no, just a bit taken aback by the glaring lack of diversity of any sort.

How ridiculous! People got tickets for the event.. should the organisers make sure only 50% are white?!

Tonight1 · 01/01/2024 01:58

Oh give it a rest. Tickets were open to all.

I switched over to BBC1 at 11.57pm so caught the tail-end of his singing. Didn't sound too bad.

It would be depressing to have to do an equality and diversity analysis of the audience.

Jacopo · 01/01/2024 02:07

This thread is like the recent initiative to try to get more ethnic minorities climbing hills in the Lake District.
People go to the events they want to go to. It’s ludicrous to try to make people like something they’re not interested in. They are probably having a nice time at some other concert. I feel sure they’re not sitting at home longing to be admitted to the Rick Astley one.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 01/01/2024 02:23

It's just the BBC pandering to the Tory gammon as usual. Stopped paying the licence fee years ago.

White people going to see Rick Astley in concert is the BBC ‘pandering to the Tory gammon’? What? What does Tory gammon even mean?!

Doteycat · 01/01/2024 02:28

What a load of bollox.
Seriously. Have you fuck all else to be offended at?
Do u know why its mainly middle aged white men and women at a rich Astley concert?
Cos it's mainly middle aged white men and women who like Rick Astley.
It's not rocket science. Or racism. .
Idiotic notions.

Are you suggesting black people were stopped from obtaining tickets?

cerisepanther73 · 01/01/2024 03:07

Have you ever thought black audiences could just have much better taste ear for music and just avoided his singing nasally which is mistaken 🤔 for music

He wasn't that good even back in his so called Hay day of 80s,

it was just back then it was era od electronics music ect and teens ear for selection has developed enough.😉

cerisepanther73 · 01/01/2024 03:09

oops typo mistake not * developed enough

Oh FFS!!!

Can we just stop with this once and for all!!

White middle aged people are Rick Astley's core demographic. End of!!

I bet any money you're actually white and middle-aged yourself!!

Stop pretending to be offended on other people's behalf!!

You're toe-curlingly embarrassing!!

I'm not a fan and I don't think it is fair of you to criticise people who are not white and middle aged for not going to his show.

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 01/01/2024 03:56

Some people agreed with the OP, so can someone explain what they would like to happen, to avoid a predominantly white, middle-aged crowd?

Do you think that people of other age groups and ethnicities wanted to see Rick Astley in concert, but were hindered from buying tickets? One post on page 1 speculated whether the tickets hadn't been advertised widely enough, so presumably one person thinks he has a wider fanbase than white, middle-aged people, but the other fans weren't there to see him.

Anyone else also think that's the problem?

Alternatively, do posters believe that the audience did reflect the demographic of his fanbase? Is the problem that you think the BBC should have booked someone with greater cross-generational appeal for the NYE concert?

StockpotSoup · 01/01/2024 04:00

drspouse · 01/01/2024 00:28

I was a student in 1985 when he was a mild cliché. Britain was about 95% white then. If you weren't born then are you likely to want to see him?

You must have been psychic - he didn’t have a hit until 1987.

Wish I'd seen rod stewart now

<<<misses point of thread>>>

Me too 😆

SD1978 · 01/01/2024 04:15

What did you want them to do, for an 80's singer whose demographics is probably (now) middle aged white people? Round up some diversity and sprinkle it through the audience to make a point? As others have said- different artists will have different demographics- so we need to do the same with diverse audiences and sprinkle a bit of white hetero through them?

itllbedifferentnextyear · 01/01/2024 04:41

KarenNotAKaren · 31/12/2023 23:43

…have I fallen through the looking glass?

WHat do you propose Astley - or anyone in fact - does about this? Round up a few young black people and force them to listen to his shite music?

😂

NewtonPulsifer · 01/01/2024 05:19

Nurse! We’ve got an offended one here. Says too many middle aged white people at a Rick Astley concert. Call the cops and get Dawn Butler on the blower, ask her for her opinion.

Willmafrockfit · 01/01/2024 05:40

i didnt like Rick in 1987, i was 22
i turned off jools holland - same as every year, same guests, and ruby turner, not liking rod stewart
i really enjoyed rick astley, he is just great

WhatNoUsername · 01/01/2024 06:35

This is really not something that needs to be diverse.

Willmafrockfit · 01/01/2024 06:38

82% of people according to 2021 census in england and wales are white op.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 01/01/2024 06:55

I was switching over between him and Jools and the music on Jools was dire except for the Irish band who had a bit of life in them as all the other bands were all jazz and annoying as fuck, Rick is still able to sing live and loved when he did his last song the disco stuff and those two black girls were amazing and sang their hearts out and were great but Rod Stewart and was awful and most of the artists on Jools were just awful

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 01/01/2024 06:56

Those wannabe Amy Whinehouse singers just awful.
