Personally I think he's great and he's clearly living his best life but the demographic of the crowd. Middle aged white men and women. The lack of diversity is quite shocking.

Nothing more inclusive than some new years anagram fun. Anyone else spot that Rick Astley can be Tickly Arse?…..

Ooh, you have a good mind to spot that.

Jason played my Uni - we paid 2K for a nights accom. He rocked!

When I saw him (actually saw him in 2016 too when I was pregnant, didn’t realise and drunk myself into a stupor Blush) he was even very kind and gracious to the alarming number of women chucking their knickers to him on the stage.

Bon Jovi - another great performer with incredible audience interaction.

Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Jess Glynn, Bruno Mars - all of them boring and self indulgent performers. Lady Gaga has a great voice but boy does she love the sound of it talking

Justkoko · 01/01/2024 01:04

Oh give over op.
Were you looking for the 2024 Guinness World Record for first offended person of 2024?
Honestly.
Happy new year all, good on you Rick, always great to watch.

That's given DS1 a giggle :D

Presumably the tickets were available to anyone and those are the people who decided to purchase/apply for them.

Exactly FFS! Common bloody sense! You think they should block a certain number of white people that want to buy a ticket in order to save a certain number of tickets for non white people? That’s actually pretty racist itself! First come first serve -whatever the colour of their skin! stop with the virtue signalling and making an issue where there isn’t one! Bet you wouldn’t say this where the crowd were vastly black people. In the 80s/early 90s when Rick Astley was in his heyday the UK population was much less diverse- that would explain most of his fans being white. Come on.

TommyNever · 01/01/2024 01:09

Rick and Rod are both to be avoided as far as I'm concerned, but I don't know why it should be thought somehow problematic that they mostly appeal to older white people.

I saw Elton about 20 years ago, he performed with bronchitis and honestly could have blown anyone half his age out the water!

He did a gig in my hometown. He's fantastic.

Have a brilliant new yr OP xx

DragonMama3 · 01/01/2024 01:11

I was right below the stage. I could smell him. He smelt amazing. (Jason Donovan). He looked just like he did in the 80s.

bellac11 · 01/01/2024 01:17

Why does an audience need to be diverse?

Presuming you mean ethnically diverse OP?

Because of course diversity and difference and inclusion comes in many forms, lots of people there will be from all different classes, backgrounds, cultures, religions, disabilities, educational levels, sexuality, the list is endless

And 'white' covers a multitude of different ethnicities.

ImSoHappyILiveInAWorldThatHasOctobers · 01/01/2024 01:18

Haha! I wasn't going to open the thread incase I got RickRolled 😂

Wishitsnows · 01/01/2024 01:19

Rick was brilliant! I normally watch jules Holland but this was so much better. I kept switching but Rick won! Do I need to be white to watch it or just love the music?

Namechange4448830938489 · 01/01/2024 01:19

That is like going to a Playboi Carti show and complaining that the crowd is not diverse enough 🙄

Dita73 · 01/01/2024 01:22

Oh who gives a fuck who’s in the bloody audience. When he sang with Rylan I nearly wet myself. Good luck to him

Rhinohides · 01/01/2024 01:24

He always comes across as a nice guy. Crowd seemed like a nice group.
Not sure why there is an issue with a group of middle aged white men and women enjoying a concert on NYE?

Would you rather people who didn’t want to go were somehow persuaded to do so, and if so- why?
Anyway- Happy New Year
And @KarenNotAKaren - I thought your username was great. Not sure why someone would want to comment negatively about a username

ScruffMuffin · 01/01/2024 01:28

How on earth does Rick look the same as he did 30 years ago? He must be getting on for 60, but he doesn't look it at all. I thought the show wasn't great tbh... he's an OK entertainer but not a great singer. I think the backing singers and band showed him up a bit in that respect. This will probably be an unpopular view though! He's better than he used to be, but just doesn't sing quite in tune.

Beaverbridge · 01/01/2024 01:33

@Babymamamama .Me too, minute he came on, off you go Rod. Brutal. Rick Astley was brilliant.

DragonMama3 · 01/01/2024 01:33

How does anyone genuinely know a person's ethnic heritage.

Everyone assumes I'm white European because I look a lot like my late Grandmother (anglo-irish/dutch descent) but my other Great- Great Grandmother was from nr China. My Mum has blue-black hair naturally.

You really can't judge ethnicity by looks.

Maireas · 01/01/2024 01:40

Dear lord, don't ever look at a Cliff Richard audience, OP, you'd faint.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 01/01/2024 01:43

PomanderDelight · 31/12/2023 23:40

Rod Stewart on Jools Holland was shocking 🤣

Agree, he gives me the Willie's.,...blaeaugh!!

bellac11 · 01/01/2024 01:45

Where are you from ?

'London'

No but where are you really from?

'Well my parents were born in London but from Irish and Scottish stock'

Yes but where are your people from?

'Well I think there is some Italian heritage back there and some German...'

But what about their people.....

etc etc etc

slore · 01/01/2024 01:46

YANBU. God forbid middle aged white people be fans of something. How problematic. Their presence should have been made less offensive by shipping in young people of colour to achieve at least a 1:3 ratio.

🙄

Err, west of Scotland! Why does that matter?

Stopsnowing · 01/01/2024 01:48

He was great at Glastonbury. His audience are middle aged because he was big when they were young.

TheCheerfulNihilist · 01/01/2024 01:50

Yeah, better chuck some tokens in to meet some random tickbox somewhere?

Or maybe people can just like what they like and everyone could stop worrying about fucking diversity points for five minutes?
