Being told what to order from takeaway..

Beanz2022 · 29/12/2023 22:11

friend invited me round for drinks and food, she said we could get indian takeaway..(context, her and her husband are veggies) she text me one hour before and said would it be OK if you didn't order a meat dish as we don't allow meat in the house.. so I ended up having a vegetable curry which, I really hated.. she had whatever she wanted and thoroughly enjoyed it.. why invite me round if you know I eat meat and won't allow me to order what I want.

OP posts:

She did text you an hour before to let you know so you had the option to rain check or eat first.

If you’re Asian too, you will know as well as I do that broccoli or carrot do not feature in Indian curries and you don’t need to be visiting vegetarian restaurants or those specialising in Gujarati cuisine to order Indian food where vegetables (especially those OP had) are not the main dish. This was the only point I was making - not entirely sure why you singled my comment out if you know all this anyway

So what you’re saying is that OP is lying and that she didn’t have a broccoli and carrot curry?

And did you know that Chicken Tikka Masala didn’t originate in India, it was invented for British palates?

So it’s entirely possible this restaurant has created a veggie curry with broccoli and carrots for the British palate.

I didn’t single you out. You replied to my comment and I replied to you.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 30/12/2023 21:23

I think if they were paying its fair enough, I am sure you could have found a vegetarian curry that you liked, there are normally loads of them.

however, given you were paying for yourself it seems unfair to restrict you.

You singled out my initial post otherwise this conversation wouldn't be happening. You’ve also demonstrated you didn’t bother reading it properly in the first place. I said the OP made a silly choice by picking broccoli and carrot because they are not usually in Indian food and a lentil or paneer based dish would likely have been better tasting. Not once have I accusing anyone of lying or said that she should like vegetables.

Anyway no point continuing this pointless conversation - my original comment is there for all to see

But OP probably wanted a curry and that was the only veggie curry on the menu. Not sure why you would call her silly for it.

No one is singling you out, it’s a forum, I’ve replied to lots of people.

I doubt it. If the veggie friends also ordered from the same takeaway it is very unlikely that they all ordered the same thing.

AlisonDonut · 29/12/2023 22:13

You really hated a vegetable curry? But would have loved a meat one? Which also contains vegetables?

Weird.

Not weird at all. I had a veg curry once and it had fucking carrots and peas in it. In an Indian curry. It was nasty.

zerored · 30/12/2023 22:05

YABU. Her house, her rules. Why didn't you just say you'll eat before or suggest eating at a restaurant instead if it was that much of a problem?

silentbutdeadly1 · 30/12/2023 22:08

I like carrots and peas.

Exactly this. It is very likely the host suggested a restaurant with a reasonable vegetarian offering given two of them in the house are veggie.

As another PP has said, if eating veggie food with vegetarians, ask them what is good and much more likely to enjoy the meal.

I like carrots and peas.

So do I. I like peas in a Chinese curry, and I like carrots in a salad or roast dinner. But not in an Indian curry.

CurlewKate · 31/12/2023 01:26

Here's a delicious curry that has both peas and carrots in it. I can highly recommend it!

they are great in some curries, for example a dansak. Peas are pretty standard in Indian curries.

ItAintGonnaGoDownEasyIfItAintCheezy · 31/12/2023 08:32

Peas weren't really the issue, it was moreso the carrot.

Tinkerbyebye · 31/12/2023 08:34

Ah well I would have just said I don’t like the veggie dishes so let’s give it a miss

RadRad · 31/12/2023 08:40

Clearly you didn't know her that well if you didn't know meat was not allowed in her house. I would have been slightly irritated but move on and not visit again. Is she a close friend?

silentbutdeadly1 · 31/12/2023 08:46

I was thinking about this ln . You could have asked to have gotten a different dish from a different takeaway

CurlewKate · 31/12/2023 09:52

@RadRad " I would have been slightly irritated but move on and not visit again."

You would stop visiting a friend because she doesn't want meat in her house? Blimey!

Islandermummy · 31/12/2023 10:57

"Do you mind if I bring a pizza to sling in the oven as I don't like veggie curries?"

I can see why OP was disappointed not to get a fave dish, that she was looking forward to. Sounds like it wasn't a great curry house, which doesn't help.

But although OP is entitled to strongly dislike all (of the available) veg curries, it is unusual. Hosts probably didn't realise that it'd ruin your enjoyment of the meal.

I don't think there is a human right to take meat round people's houses though!

You don't sound like a very good friend.
I like my friends, regardless of what diet they follow. Whether it is a lifestyle choice or dictated by religion or health issues it strikes me as rather petty not to visit someone because they don't allow meat in the house.

I eat meat. I also eat loads of vegetarian dishes and enjoy both equally because I am a broad minded adult

RadRad · 31/12/2023 11:52

@RampantIvy you can still be friends with someone and not visit their house surely😂

RampantIvy · 31/12/2023 11:54

But why would it be a problem to have one meat free meal @RadRad?

RadRad · 31/12/2023 11:58

@RampantIvy it's not a problem really, just both sides need to enjoy it presumably, that's how friendship works, as I said if this was a close friend, the OP would have known the ground rules anyway.

ANightmareBeforeChristmas · 31/12/2023 11:58

If you are shelling out on a takeaway, it needs to be worthwhile or it's a complete waste of your money.
