To think if you don't eat dairy you can't expect everyone to make everything dairy free just for you?

I have a relative. She's gone dairy free. Fine. We'll get some stuff she can eat in for Christmas. But she's been asking what we're having and every time I say something like coronation turkey on boxing day or trifle but don't worry I'll make you something dairy free She's being really annoying and insisting I make it all dairy free so she doesn't miss out. I think she just has to accept a dairy free trifle would be shit and she can't eat the cheese but we're all going to eat it anyway.
As long as there's enough food she can eat I think it's fine.

Aparantly it's mean if we're eating cheese and she can't have any

Tell her it's mean expecting everyone else to eat dairy free shit.

Yeah, she kind of needs to grow up and accept that however unfortunate she is having intolerances, the world needs to keep spinning.

BigBadBoom · 23/12/2023 21:10

My parents are dairy free due to intolerances and (apart from banging on about it 24/7) are quite happy with being offered an alternative dessert, a vegan cheeseboard etc. I think the vegan cheese is revolting, but they're used to it by now I suppose. I'm making sure there is no butter or dairy in the main Christmas dishes, but they wouldn't dream of everyone missing out on everything else.

unlikelychump · 23/12/2023 21:16

My dd has a dairy allergy. It pisses me off when my mother adds a knob of butter to everything and "forgets" to check packs.

So far I know she can't have Xmas pudding, cauliflower cheese, stuffing.
We will bring food for her, but and puddings for others too, but I do wish others would make a modicum of effort.

JenniferBooth · 23/12/2023 21:18

@unlikelychump My DM cant understand why i cant eat a ready made lasagne

HAF1119 · 23/12/2023 21:22

Not everything needs to be dairy free for dairy free people

Even children of 4 or 5 that I know attend events full of dairy (including chocolate) and they have just what they are able to eat due to allergies etc and understand it can't all be catered around them

I guess I good compromise for a trifle would be a vegan trifle and a non vegan? So that the version for them isn't massively differing from the rest

I do get that it can be a bit depressing if you have a reason you can't eat milk - and then you had everyone having coronation chicken while you had a poor substitute, then cheese and crackers and you had plain crackers, then trifle and you had some completely different dessert. But if similar vegan versions are on offer I wouldn't see an issue?

Yanbu. To be honest, I’m lactose intolerant and I still eat dairy I just take the tablets and don’t overdo it. As long as you have made sure that there is enough for her to eat you’ve done your bit.

Where can I find enough vegan cheese to make a cheese board? I struggled with the dairy cheese board! What is vegan cheese even made out of.

Asda. Vegan cheese selection.

ZombieGirl86 · 23/12/2023 21:54

Agree, I'm dairy intolerant and I wouldn't expect this. If anything I would feel guilty offer to bring something I can eat?

IncognitoIsMyFavouriteWord · 23/12/2023 22:15

I couldn't eat dairy because of a medical condition, I did not expect everything to be dairy free for me.

Your friend is being very entitled.

Being lactose intolerant is different to dairy intolerance
