Tinsel.. does it go on the tree or not?

I say no. Absolutely not. He loves it, the more the merrier and the tackier..

If I don't put it on the tree he will wait till I'm in bed and put it on 🤣. So I'm embracing it this year but it really is so tacky!

I’m with you, no, it’s too tacky! Unless you go full 80’s and have those glittery/foilish/plasticky type fold out decorations hanging from the ceiling too. That’d really be good, v retro and therefore fashionable apparently (i checked with a teenager, so it’s definitely true!)

sweetpickle23 · 21/12/2023 22:37

Aren’t all Christmas decs tacky? I don’t know why tinsel takes all the bad rep!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 21/12/2023 22:38

We don’t have it on our tree. It goes over pictures in another room.

MrsSucculent · 21/12/2023 22:38

Tinsel is for photo frames, mirrors, fireplaces etc. it is not for the tree. That’s my opinion. It looks tacky and trees don’t have to look tacky.

Friendfoe1 · 21/12/2023 22:38

Yes there HAS to be tinsel 😃

inappropriateraspberry · 21/12/2023 22:39

NO! Tinsel is horrible. Bad for the environment, doesn't really last as it sheds so quickly and is just tacky.
I hate it stuck over pictures on the wall as well.
We have lots of baubles in different sizes and clear glass ornaments that reflect the light.

AllAroundMyCat · 21/12/2023 22:40

Christmas trees should depict memories and love.

Stylish trees are abhorrent.

Terrrence · 21/12/2023 22:41

Get it on the tree!

JulesJules · 21/12/2023 22:45

I've never had tinsel. It sent my first cat (in the 80s) mad so I've never had it, I do ribbons/bows instead.

No theme to my tree, it's got every single thing the DDs made at school in revolting salt dough with glitter. I once knitted Jimi Hendrix for DH, and now Jimi is our Xmas tree angel

Pallisers · 21/12/2023 22:45

My 20 year old daughter tells me that her generation are vigorously embracing Tacky Christmas because they all grew up with tastefully decorated trees in greyish tasteful houses with their handmade ornaments from school banished to the "kitchen tree'.

Roastiesarethebestbit · 21/12/2023 22:46

I prefer tinsel on a tree to strung up elsewhere to be honest. I hate stylish , curated trees, with matchy matchy ornaments.

Scarletttulips · 21/12/2023 22:50

No tinsel on mine ever - like the kids ornaments which bring memories each year.

Doesn’t have to match but I choose different colours each year as we have gold or silver red or green pink or purple sometimes all at once

PlipPlopChoo · 21/12/2023 23:06

No. Tinsel goes around the crackers and inside the Christmas Pudding.

Oh wait.
Of course it goes on the fucking tree.

Metallicant · 21/12/2023 23:13

No, it belongs in the 1980s.

LilBooThang · 22/12/2023 00:13

Tinsel is not for me, but if you have to have some then put a little on the tree. Nowhere else!

StBrides · 22/12/2023 00:20

The answer here is to have 2 trees: one with, one without

I don't use tinsel but I have to admit, it looks pretty good!

Midsummernightsdreaming · 22/12/2023 00:24

Tinsel has had no place on Christmas trees in this family since the 1970s - it's been relegated to the land of Christmases past, along with coloured lights (although I'm still arguing the case for the lights with my teenager, who's trying to convince me that they're having a revival).

darvod · 22/12/2023 00:38

CatherinedeBourgh · 21/12/2023 21:32

Christmas trees are meant to be tacky.

I wholeheartedly disagree. Why do so many people see Christmas as a time to embrace tacky things like tinsel on trees, ugly Christmas jumpers, and other hideous decorations. Whats wrong with a nicely put together tasteful Christmas?

FussyPud · 22/12/2023 00:42

Our tree is too small for tinsel. It is pretty much made of tinsel though, so it doesn’t matter. Not that it’s gone up the last few years mind:/

TinselTittz · 22/12/2023 00:43

@WetBandits omg the beads!! My mum loved them!

I love seeing a tree covered in tinsel and lights. I was going to put baubles on mine this year but couldn't be bothered and I think it looks great with tinsel. I love darkly things and have practically covered my flat in tinsel!!! 🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄

ErrolTheDragon · 22/12/2023 01:15

It had never occurred to me that anyone would fail to put tinsel on their tree.Confused

Mind you, we don't have lights on ours. We didn't get any when we first started doing a tree when dd was small, because we always went away to the ILs for Xmas, so couldn't leave them on but a tree with unlit lights says 'oy, Mr Burglar, no one's home'. What we had then became The Tree and The Decorations - part of the tradition is that it looks the same every year.

(Except this one, so far... it's in the loft, DH is away and I can't get the damned thing down by myself.)

TinselTittz · 22/12/2023 01:42

Ambi · 21/12/2023 22:19

We have 2 trees for this reason 🙂. I have a beautiful 7footer with nice baubles, ornaments and 1 strand of pearls. The kids decorate the smaller tree with the old naff baubles and tinsel.

I like this!!

Plenty of Christmas stuff everywhere, but not a jot of tinsel in sight here! Can't stand the stuff. Fresh door wreath, garlands, assorted Christmas trees , lights. No tinsel!

Daffyyellow · 22/12/2023 01:55

I don’t mind tinsel on a tree, but in blobs not as strings!

What I really want is a silver tinsel Christmas tree, but vintage style and twig like, not the modern or fluffy styles!!
