Tinsel.. does it go on the tree or not?

I say no. Absolutely not. He loves it, the more the merrier and the tackier..

If I don't put it on the tree he will wait till I'm in bed and put it on 🤣. So I'm embracing it this year but it really is so tacky!

I also LOVE angel hair on vintage looking trees but you can't find it anywhere any more.. suppose its bad for the environment altho I had some for years I used to laboriously collect up and reuse every year until it eventually got too tatty

GrumpyPanda · 21/12/2023 22:01

No. LTB.

Also it might make the tree go up in flames if it gets too close to the live candles we're using on it 😁

jannier · 21/12/2023 22:02

No it covers up all the ornaments and makes a blurred mess like you threw the box over it ....but I always have a real tree and like symmetrical ....take ages getting a good tree.

Toddlerteaplease · 21/12/2023 22:03

Definitely on the tree.

BlueBellsArePretty · 21/12/2023 22:03

Tinsel is fine on an artificial tree and adds bushiness but has no place on a real tree.

Canthave2manycats · 21/12/2023 22:03

Hate tinsel - just no!!

AllAboardTootToot · 21/12/2023 22:04

Hell no it does not! Can’t beat a tasteful tree ! Get that tinsel in the bin 😂

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 21/12/2023 22:04

Where do we stand on the probably unbelievably dangerous and possibly toxic angel hair that my mother loved? On top of the tinsel too.

WagathaCreamT · 21/12/2023 22:06

Absolutely not, no, no tinsel on the tree. However, my DH is a tinsel fan so I've had to learn to compromise. And by that I mean he puts it all over picture frames and I smile politely 😂

JenJenJenJenJenJen · 21/12/2023 22:07

It’s tacky, but not as tacky as Emma Bridgewater pottery.

Sorry OP 😉

Onelifeonly · 21/12/2023 22:07

No my tinsel-loving days are over. I might put a bit over a mirror or picture but not on the tree anymore. DH used to wrap it round the banister on the stairs - it feels horrible when you put your hand on it, so I've put a stop to that. And on a tree it just looks gauche and clunky. And it SHEDS which is its worst feature. I used to like the thin stringy types hung on the tree but got fed up with it getting everywhere.

We have a real tree too so I like to see the green branches on between the lights and baubles.

No strong feelings either way here 🤣

NeverDropYourMooncup · 21/12/2023 22:08

I was thinking this year would be the one where I chose the decorations and had a lovely tree, sparkling glass decorations, and a few, carefully picked extras to go with unglittered pine cones, a bronze lantern and some candles.

I have the giant pine cones and the lantern, but they're behind a tree, novelty snowman, penguin with a red hat, there are three paper lanterns, a box of tinsel for the cat to sleep in, plastic silver bells from Woolworths c.1984, tinsel under the telly, cards from his family, metallic paper chains, sticky Santa, puddings and presents stuck to the unit glass and green tinsel wrapped around the Cheese Plant.

His concession to my wishes is that he's put up warm white lights instead of multiple flashing multicoloured ones and the bannisters are currently unscathed.

Maybe one day.

OctoblocksAssemble · 21/12/2023 22:10

Most of my decorations including the tinsel are from the 80's. I shall never have my tree any other way!
The kids are firmly on my side so Dh turns a blind eye. Mind you he'd prefer no tree due to the childhood trauma if being forced to decorate a tree with his very aesthetically minded dad and being berated for doing it wrong...

Creepygardengnome · 21/12/2023 22:10

I kind of hate tinsel, but this year we decided to bring last year's old Christmas tree back into the house and parts of it had no needles. Bought some tinsel to cover up the bald spots and it actually looks decent.

easilydistracted1 · 21/12/2023 22:11

I think I may be married to the wrong person and should be with your husband. The only slight fly in the ointment is I'm a lesbian. We have decorations only this year and plain fairly lights. No trashy star garland or mismatching tinsel. I'm quite sad about it and if I had the energy I'd throw some on. This is karma for not liking Christmas and it being my wife's special interest. Its not Christmas without the tinsel. The tree looks naked

McP13 · 21/12/2023 22:12

Always have tinsel on our tree… wouldn’t be our tree without it!

SugarCookieMonster · 21/12/2023 22:13

Tinsel free since 2005! Although I feel my hatred has softened slightly just not enough to let it enter my house 😂

Also love the photo angle, like you’ve taken a covert pic of it out in the wild!

Ambi · 21/12/2023 22:19

We have 2 trees for this reason 🙂. I have a beautiful 7footer with nice baubles, ornaments and 1 strand of pearls. The kids decorate the smaller tree with the old naff baubles and tinsel.

StubbleTurnips · 21/12/2023 22:23

Tinsel free zone - it’s the plastic smell for me Envy < not envy

Rosebel · 21/12/2023 22:27

I threw our tinsel away when we took our tree down in January. I hate the stuff. DH and DDs weren't happy and DH brought some more.
I haven't decided whether to throw it away in January or not😂

User1786 · 21/12/2023 22:32

Tinsel is tacky and horrible. I hate it!

GenXisthebest · 21/12/2023 22:34

YES to tinsel on the tree

PlanBea · 21/12/2023 22:34

For those saying tinsel then lights - I put the lights on right in the centre of the tree, then the tinsel in the mid point of the branches, then the rest of the lights on the edge of the branches (then ornaments). Lighting the tree up from the middle and using the tinsel to reflect makes the tree a magical level of glow. You need a bunch more lights though, but it looks amazing!

sweetpickle23 · 21/12/2023 22:35

I grew up with a “tinsel is naff” mum who banned it in our house, so now it’s the more the merrier for me. I love a bit of kitsch, it’s Christmas!

TheDogsMother · 21/12/2023 22:36

Definitely no tinsel. Go warm white lights but lots of decos that have been gathered over time.
