Tinsel.. does it go on the tree or not?

I say no. Absolutely not. He loves it, the more the merrier and the tackier..

If I don't put it on the tree he will wait till I'm in bed and put it on 🤣. So I'm embracing it this year but it really is so tacky!

Tinsel is tye best decoration

Solocup · 22/12/2023 02:52

For years my children believed I was allergic to tinsel. Parenting win.

My partner thinks I'm a cheating scumbag whore because I've changed my profile pic on fb to me and my cousin. He said he can't trust me and we're over because of this

named Tinsel?

Ohnotyoutoo · 22/12/2023 06:10

I love tinsel, but just not on a tree!

AbsolCatly · 22/12/2023 06:12

Tree decoration rules in this house:
Lights, tinsel then baubles

Even my eldest DD, who will no longer allow me to decorate the living room tree as it must be colour co-ordinated, allows tinsel (I'm relegated to the other tree with the younger DCs and all the home made and random decorations) Grin

Tinsel is also used for windowsills, tops of blinds, stair gates and banisters! With the fairy lights it adds a touch of Christmas sparkle

Velvian · 22/12/2023 07:01

This is the first time I've realised that some people don't have tinsel on their trees or that I'm potentially being judged for the copious amounts of it on mine.😱

RantyAnty · 22/12/2023 07:18

Yes tinsel should go on.

I remember throwing handfulls of it at the tree as a child.

FairytaleOfKent · 22/12/2023 07:21

Tinsel on a tree looks really dated to me, but that's probably because everyone I know that still uses tinsel is 55+.

I don't use it, but I do cover my tree in a tonne of lights and so many decorations. It isn't classy, that's for sure.

DeadButDelicious · 22/12/2023 07:48

Definitely on the tree. And hung over pictures. Grin

I'm firmly of the opinion that Christmas decorations should be at least a little bit tacky. We have a white tree pre lit with multicoloured lights, tinsel, some vintage foil baubles, a smattering of white/translucent baubles, silver stars and snowflakes, some novelty ornaments and the rest are either hand knit/crocheted by me or made by DD at school. We add something new to it every year.

Malificent1 · 22/12/2023 07:54

A friend’s cat once ate some tinsel and it cost thousands to repair the damage that it did to the poor cat’s insides. We have pets and got rid of our tinsel that very year.

AlltheFs · 22/12/2023 07:55

inappropriateraspberry · 21/12/2023 22:39

NO! Tinsel is horrible. Bad for the environment, doesn't really last as it sheds so quickly and is just tacky.
I hate it stuck over pictures on the wall as well.
We have lots of baubles in different sizes and clear glass ornaments that reflect the light.

I agree it is not exactly environmentally friendly but all our tinsel is over 10 years old and still going strong. It’s not a disposable item!
I doubt we will buy more once it has died but it lasts years.

Iamthatgenius · 22/12/2023 07:59

Tinsel on our tree looks gorgeous! Not tacky at all. It makes it look less naked, it looks full. I'll try to post a photo if I can.

I'd consider pretty tacky anywhere else like round a picture or on a fireplace or something.

Also, it's like most other Christmas decorations, not exactly environmentally friendly but lasts for years and years.

Zanatdy · 22/12/2023 08:02

I never use it on the tree anymore but I would use it if I wanted - this whole tinsel looks tacky is ridiculous as Christmas trees are meant to be tacky. I’ve seen some gorgeous ones in groups but I couldn’t be bothered spending days decorating my tree personally.

borntobequiet · 22/12/2023 08:04

Tistheseasontobejollytrala · 21/12/2023 21:35

It’s all down to taste, I’m not a big fan of tinsel or red underwear but I can see by its prevalence in the shops that plenty of people like them.
Can you take turns to decorate the tree? This year he can have full reign, next year you do with the understanding of no underhand sabotage by the non-decorator?
I think he’s enjoying winding you up.

Red underwear on the tree is a bit niche tbh.

Calamitousness · 22/12/2023 08:07

There’s no place for tinsel. You shouldn’t have it in your home at all in my opinion. But Hey, we are all different. Some people like tinsel and tacky. Throw it out and he won’t put it on the tree. Agree with whomever said around the pictures is worse.

TeddyBeans · 22/12/2023 09:02

WetBandits · 21/12/2023 21:48

Omg I’d forgotten about lametta!

We used to have strings of beads on our tree but it became a war every year trying to untangle the fuckers, no matter how carefully we wound them up and packed them away. They disappeared one year, never to return.

DP and I have started a weird tradition where we collect owl tree decorations (we find a new one each year!), no idea where or how it started but we put our 8th owl on the tree this year Grin

I remember the bead strings! There were some at a messy play session we went to on Monday and the tangled mess nostalgia hit really hard 🤣🤣

PhoenixReincarnated · 22/12/2023 09:49

This year all my tree has on is tinsel and beads. There are no baubles and the pre-lit lights no longer work despite only having bought it this year and it having been up 2/3 days when they stopped working 🙄 The reason? His name is Blue 🙄🤣

BlueRidgeMountain · 22/12/2023 10:14

No tinsel here as we have a cat that likes to eat it (among other ridiculous non-food items 🙄), and I am NOT spending another Christmas Eve at the emergency vet with 2 inches of tinsel sticking out of her arse. So there’s an easy win for you OP - just get a ridiculous cat like mine and never worry about tinsel again!!

inappropriateraspberry · 22/12/2023 10:26

Watching The Bishop's Wife on BBC2, this is the only tree I'm allowing with tinsel and laments!

Christmas trees are meant to be tacky.

Wash your mouth out!

ManateeFair · 22/12/2023 10:27

There's no right or wrong here. I don't like tinsel, not because I'm snobby about Christmas decorations but because (and I realise this is fucking weird) looking at it makes me feel itchy and prickly. Even thinking about it now is making me want to scratch.

It does smell lovely though, if I recall. All old-school retro foily Christmas decs smell amazing.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/12/2023 13:30

I doubt we will buy more once it has died but it lasts years.

Ours is over 20 years old - I got good thick stuff and it's not shed much. We've also got some that's older - I've no idea how old - that DHs late uncle gave us.

The thing that's wasteful is
A) real trees ...I feel sorry for the poor little things lopped down in their youth. And most of them shed far more than tinsel!
B) people getting new decorations rather than buying decent ones in colours you like once and reusing.

AlltheFs · 22/12/2023 14:42

@ErrolTheDragon
Real trees are not wasteful. See below

Environmental Benefits

  • Real trees are much better for the environment. They are essential to complex ecosystems that provide refuge for wildlife, protect water supplies and stabilise the soil. They're at the heart of scenic green belt countryside that's increasingly under threat due to housing shortages and population density, particularly in urban parts of the UK.
  • A single Christmas tree can absorb up to 1 ton of carbon dioxide over its life time, with one acre providing enough oxygen for 18 people every day. More Christmas trees being grown at any one time means more much-needed clean area being produced from our Christmas tree forests, preventing the earth-warming "greenhouse effect".
  • Like virtually all growers, we replace every tree we cut with a newly planted sapling each year. In this way, harvesting a Christmas tree is no more damaging to the environment that harvesting an ear of corn.
Scirocco · 22/12/2023 14:43

If you aren't putting it on the tree... Where else would it go?
