Tinsel.. does it go on the tree or not?

I say no. Absolutely not. He loves it, the more the merrier and the tackier..

If I don't put it on the tree he will wait till I'm in bed and put it on 🤣. So I'm embracing it this year but it really is so tacky!

I got a loveyouu tree for Valentine’s Day

BeyondMyWits · 21/12/2023 21:38

You are both right. There is no right way to decorate a tree. Your stylish and his tacky are both equally valid.

I like a multicoloured explosion of Christmas, DH likes red and gold. We have a mainly red and gold tree with pops of colour. Both of us are almost happy.... both of us are honed by our childhood Christmases. We have tinsel, but generally heaped under the tree to sparkle in the lights (because my mum used to do it that way)

SpecialCharacters · 21/12/2023 21:38

Tacky Christmas trees are so much for festive than ‘elegant/tasteful’ ones.

Was always jealous of my friends’ trees when growing up. They were joyful explosions of colour whereas ours were carefully curated, rigidly colour-themed and, frankly, boring.

Iwishiwasasilentnight · 21/12/2023 21:37

The tinsel you have around the picture frames is tackier.

🤣 I had hoped that would be enough tinsel for him but apparently not!! Oh well looks like im wrong.

More tinsel the better 🤣

We are a no tinsel on the tree household but I don’t mind some tinsel elsewhere which makes no sense.

To be fair our tree only has beautiful artisan German decorations on it from MIL who lives in Berlin combined with DD’s nursery creations so it’s quite a bespoke look 😂

MulledWineBeMine · 21/12/2023 21:39

ON the tree

with EVERYTHING else. Christmas Tree to me is about memories, not style

your tree looks lovely!

my friend sent me a photo of his tree the other day, his wife wrapped it around the tree so tight it looks like it's being kidnapped! 😂

mine is a lot more slouchy!!

It’s a tree in your living room with plastic crap on it, it’s suppose to be tacky! Embrace it. These people who think they have grown up elegant trees - also tacky. It’s Christmas, just go with it!

This!! Team tinsel!!

Put it all on the tree so it reflects the light. Think retro rather than tacky.

TeddyBeans · 21/12/2023 21:42

Lametta on the other hand...we used to go nuts with it as kids but you rarely see it anymore and I can't say I miss it in the slightest. It looked like the tinsel threw up all over a beautifully decorated tacky Christmas tree

vipersnest1 · 21/12/2023 21:42

You need some lametta too, OP. 😁

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 21/12/2023 21:43

I do love a bit of tinsel. I don’t put it on my tree though, over photo frames and in my hair.

Joeylove88 · 21/12/2023 21:43

A small amount of tinsel on the tree tucked in a bit is fine 😁

AlltheFs · 21/12/2023 21:44

I love lametta! Can’t have it as have got kittens that will kill themselves on anything like that. It reminds me of my auntie’s house when I was a kid- they always had an amazing tree (in an early 80’s way!)

ithinkthatmaybeimdreaming · 21/12/2023 21:46

Of course it goes on the tree!!! The notion of anything on a Christmas tree being "tacky" is just weird.

Omg I’d forgotten about lametta!

We used to have strings of beads on our tree but it became a war every year trying to untangle the fuckers, no matter how carefully we wound them up and packed them away. They disappeared one year, never to return.

DP and I have started a weird tradition where we collect owl tree decorations (we find a new one each year!), no idea where or how it started but we put our 8th owl on the tree this year Grin

HunterBidensBurnerPhone · 21/12/2023 21:51

There's no such thing as a non-tacky Christmas tree.

eddiemairswife · 21/12/2023 21:52

When I was a child tinsel could get tarnished if it wasn't wrapped in black tissue between Christmasses. Also lametta was from metal strips dropped by planes to foil radar.

vipersnest1 · 21/12/2023 21:53

@WetBandits, I'm waiting for a ten metre string to arrive....

Crooklodge · 21/12/2023 21:53

I've never even put tinsel on my tree, God knows how I've avoided it with 4 dc and the big child dh.

we came across some of those old school foil garland thingies when shopping the other day, the kids would LOVE them and I hope they don't ever find out they exist

I’m praying for you. 🙏🏼

WandaWonder · 21/12/2023 21:55

of course it goes on that is the point of it, I do compromise and not use gold as DH hates it but he has to put up with me packing as much colour on as it can take

FreshWinterMorning · 21/12/2023 21:55

What kind of Christmas tree has no tinsel on it? Confused YABVU!

Fivepigeons · 21/12/2023 21:58

I think it looks quite cool and vintage on a tree.. especially if you have kitschy ornaments.
Depends on the theme of the tree of course. Would look shit on a very modern tree or a victorian styled one.
We've got some on ours.. I think if you put it deep in the tree behind the ornaments and it's gold, it can make the tree look thicker and bring out the sparkle of the lights more

TitsInAbsentia · 21/12/2023 21:59

I haven't used tinsel for years but it def adds that extra sparkle...next year!
