To think that pigs n blankets are too much?

I mean I love pigs and I also adore blankets but together, it feels too much. I like to keep the two totally separate.

It’s almost like combining a good cheddar with a strong French cheese.

WHAAAAAT?! Get thee behind me, Satan. No-one should ever dare reproach the divine sanctity of the pigs in blankets. This year I’m having a giant one for Christmas dinner.

fetchacloth · 22/12/2023 18:18

YANBU
I've never added these to Christmas dinner as there is more than enough on the plate already.🙂

ChocolateCinderToffee · 22/12/2023 18:20

I think they’re a triumph of marketing over common sense. I’d never seen one until about 20 years ago and suddenly they were everywhere. Now they’re a sort of ‘must-have’. I assume they started in pubs and spread from there. I can take them or leave them.

Believeitornot · 22/12/2023 18:24

I love them and happily eat them for lunch during the Christmas holidays. Less bothered about them on Christmas Day.

When we were growing up we used to have chipolata sausages and bacon wrapped stuffing, rather than the bacon around the sausages .

This sounds amazing.

MissBuffyAnneSummers · 22/12/2023 18:26

I'm with you.

We have just the pigs with our Turkey.

No blankets.

I like bacon and sausage but together it doesn't work.

We always had them with Christmas dinner in my '70s childhood.

They've been around for much, much longer than 20 years. Google says they were first included in a recipe book in the fifties.

bonzaitree · 22/12/2023 18:45

what! I won’t hear of this! I love a pig in a blanket!

are they too much yes. But everything is too much at Xmas.

squidgybits · 22/12/2023 18:45

I keep hearing about people having them with baked camembert for a starter so that's what we are having

Sirzy · 22/12/2023 18:48

Proper ones (butchers sausage and streaky bacon) are delicious. Even nicer cold!

FreddieMercurysCat · 22/12/2023 18:49

We are foregoing the Turkey this year and our pigs in blankets will be the star of the show. Can’t wait 😁

I’m nearly 40 and they have been part of every Christmas dinner I can remember

TheKeatingFive · 22/12/2023 18:56

Isn't everything? Turkey being the best example of all.

But ultimately there's only so much marketing can do. The product itself has to deliver. People eat them because they're delicious.

I have a non pig-in-blanket related question.

For those who do not like Cauliflower cheese with Christmas Dinner, do you like bread sauce? I adore the mix of cheesy sauce and gravy, however I do not do fruity condiments (cranberry / apple sauce) but English mustard, cheese sauce and gravy is divine!

Bread sauce is worse than cauliflower cheese!
I like to have the appropriate sauce for the meat in eating. Although I also love mint sauce on roast potatoes regardless of the meat option.

Am I right in thinking that pigs in blankets are a relatively modern addition to Christmas Dinner?

rainbowunicorn · 22/12/2023 19:27

tillytoodles1 · 21/12/2023 19:07

They were never served with Christmas dinner when I was younger, we just ate the crispy bacon from the turkey.
It was Nigella who gave them the stupid name of pigs in blankets.

It really wasn't.

Well they have been on my plate for the last 40 years!

SpudleyLass · 22/12/2023 19:28

YANBU.

I don't like them either. Plus, I plan on being the only pig in a blanket this Christmas

I love cauliflower cheese, but it does not belong on a roast. I don't like bread sauce. I don't like cranberry sauce either.

For me, cheesy/creamy sauces do not go well with gravy. I love gravy.

Lovely13 · 22/12/2023 19:53

Stuffing is the star. Pigs a close second.

SuperBlondie28 · 22/12/2023 20:09

Only have them with Xmas and New Year Day dinner. I buy a good quality chipolata sausage (M&S), any unsmoked bacon, cut the fat off bacon, wrap around sausage and cook in oven. Put them on foil incidentally making clean up easier.

I can't stand the streaky bacon around the pre made ones in the supermarket.

My way costs more but family loves them 😋

MotherOfUnicorns4 · 22/12/2023 20:21

Far too much pig for my liking. A limp pale sausage does nothing for me! My DP likes stuffing wrapped in bacon so we have that instead.

Edited

If it’s limp and pale your doing something wrong!
