To think that pigs n blankets are too much?

I mean I love pigs and I also adore blankets but together, it feels too much. I like to keep the two totally separate.

It’s almost like combining a good cheddar with a strong French cheese.

The blankets are the only reason I eat them. I'm surprised so many people struggle to cook them. I've never had anaemic pigs or burnt blankets.

porridgeisbae · 21/12/2023 18:52

Scrumptious.

Today I had brandy snaps with brandy butter for possibly the first time. Now that really is verging on tasting OTT. But I'll probably still have it again.

Only at Christmas would we put food all on one plate that just doesn't go. I love cauliflower cheese and I love a roast dinner but who thought the two should be eaten together. Just no!

Now this I agree with! I don't want cheese sauce and gravy on the same plate!

TeenLifeMum · 21/12/2023 18:52

We have them separate as dh doesn’t like bacon (yes, I know he’s weird) but I prefer them separate too.

Totally agree, makes the sausages too salty

yes I agree, this, I prefer the pigs on their own if I am having anything.

Thighdentitycrisis · 21/12/2023 18:55

I prefer chipolatas alone and bacon on top of the turkey for moisture

Whiskeypowers · 21/12/2023 19:00

Love them. I cook quality chocolate first until three quarters cooked then wrap them in the thin and crispy smoked pancetta rashers for the last ten minutes. They are delicious.
i am not as keen on the pre prepared ones

Catslovenip · 21/12/2023 19:04

YANBU. Pork on pork is bleurgh. I wouldn't eat lamb wrapped in lamb though either. Very strange.

tillytoodles1 · 21/12/2023 19:07

They were never served with Christmas dinner when I was younger, we just ate the crispy bacon from the turkey.
It was Nigella who gave them the stupid name of pigs in blankets.

Doesn't the chocolate melt? Grin

I used to buy them but they always ended up being left in the serving dish, decanted to a Tupperware and then eventually in the food waste bin. now I do extra sausage meat stuffing balls instead and they all get eaten by the end of Boxing Day

Similarly I no longer make or buy mince pies/stollen/Christmas pudding/Christmas cake/sausage rolls/bread sauce/cranberry sauce. Traditional but not enjoyed by any of our 12 Christmas diners. We will have other, nicer goodies instead.

OwlWeiwei · 21/12/2023 19:09

They are the best bit of Christmas dinner. We never had them growing up. I first had them at MiL's. I had to make myself not trough the entire plate of them.

The name 'pigs in blankets' predates Nigella. She did not invent the term.

BLASPHEMY!!!!

Differentstarts · 21/12/2023 19:11

Yabvvvvu that's what makes a Christmas dinner

runbackhome · 21/12/2023 19:13

I'd happily eat a plate of them with a load of mashed potato and peas.

I'm sorry but I just don't really think they have a place on any roast. Sorry everyone.

On a barm with brown sauce all day but they seem weird on a roast for me. I know I am in a tiny minority.

Better than dry turkey?!
hmm now I think about it....

Maybe just a little!

I would have heartburn for days if I did that!

My DS will leave home if there are no pigs in blankets.

JellyfishandShells · 21/12/2023 19:25

We do sausage meat with lots of chestnuts and apricot, baked in a small roasting tin and thickly sliced - it’s everyone’s favourite and, honestly, I could serve just that, roasted parsnips and gravy and we’d all be happy. Even better the next day.
So P-in-B’s would be over sausaging it. I tend to think of them as canapé /buffet items.

As others have said about their childhood , my mother used to serve little half chipolatas with separate rolled bacon (plus the scramble for the rashers laid to protect the breast 😋)

caringcarer · 21/12/2023 19:57

I love them and no matter how many I cook up they all get eaten. I put them on top of roast potatoes so all juices go into the potatoes.

Butternutsqoosh · 21/12/2023 20:30

I have 72 mini ones for 5 of us, and then I worried it wasn't enough so bought an emergency pack of 20 - it's everyone's favourite bit of dinner and we have them as part of a picnic on Xmas Eve! I stockpile one pack a week when they first come out in the shops!

Xmasbaby11 · 21/12/2023 20:37

I'm not a fan either etb. The bacon is not usually crisp enough and the sausages are pale and flaccid underneath. They are both better cooked separately.

Others like them though so I cook them and eat them .. just don't love them!

Was it heckers! 1957 they were “invented”, Nigella was born in 1960.
