To shamelessly ask for films to watch with kick ass women in

Slightlyboredandseverlyconfused · 18/12/2023 14:22

Just that really. IKIABU for misusing the AIBU area but I know there is a lot of traffic here and some kick ass women on here regularly who might know some great kick ass women films.

Context is I’m peri and totally rethinking how I want the last chapters of my life to look. I have been enjoying films and series with women front and centre - doing their thing regardless.

Queen of the South

It's a series with powerful kickass women at the top of their game.

Beignet · 18/12/2023 22:48

Loved lots of films mentioned here such as Queens Gambit and Spy.

A couple that havent been mentioned but were great.

Unorthodox- where a woman escapes from a strict orthadox Jewish community.
Hanna - it's a series on prime about a young girl with super strength.

Stranger things. 7 is the toughest female out there!

DaisyLouB · 18/12/2023 22:49

If you’re into martial arts, there’s a good Vietnamese film called Furie which I really enjoyed

Passingthethyme · 18/12/2023 22:49

Not a film, but Ozark on Netflix. So many strong female characters, it's awesome

CuteOrangeElephant · 18/12/2023 22:51

Mad Max: Fury Road is full of really kickass women.

Lippysoutherner · 18/12/2023 22:52

waiting for someone to say Tank Girl...or have I remembered Lori Petty wrong?

saoirse31 · 18/12/2023 22:54

355 on Netflix

DollyDaydreamW · 18/12/2023 22:58

Mad Max: Fury Road. Ultra violent and yet so artistically shot, and very strong women throughout.

everythingthelighttouches · 18/12/2023 23:25

The Swimmers

about Yusra Mardini. Incredible true story of two sisters who managed to leave Syria

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 18/12/2023 23:36

Bad Sisters on Apple

Slightlyboredandseverlyconfused · 18/12/2023 23:37

This is amazing. If only I could just stay in PJs under a duvet and just work my way through this for the next couple of months! Thanks all. Great suggestions.

Although I’m not so sure Mary Poppins is quite what Im after 😂

Watched Nyad tonight. Brilliant and what kick ass women. Jodie Foster is always brilliant.

Arrival - massively underated

Erin Brokovitch

Itslookinglikeabeautifulday · 19/12/2023 00:05

Some great suggestions here. Also:
Lessons In Chemistry (the Apple TV mini-series)

apricotmocha · 19/12/2023 00:15

Lots of great suggestions here, but just a couple more:

The Old Guard (Netflix) Immortal mercenaries led by Charlize Theron with Kiki Layne as the latest addition to the team.
The Lion In Winter - Katherine Hepburn as Eleanor of Aquitaine

Usernamenotavailabletryanother · 19/12/2023 00:29

Morvern Callar- great film

Neitheronethingnortheother · 19/12/2023 00:37

Phryne Fisher - possibly not quite what you are after but Pryne, Dr Mac and even Dot can all be quite kick ass in their own way

kidsandpuppies · 19/12/2023 00:48

Fried Green Tomatoes At the Whistle Stop Cafe.

I second this, it's one of my favourites. I also think The Colour Purple would fit in this category.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 19/12/2023 00:55

An Australian film from the 1980s called 'Shame'.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 19/12/2023 00:59

A Russian film which I thought was called 'The Commander' about a woman in WW2 who's not only a tank commander, she's also pregnant. Saw it just once, a long, long time ago.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 19/12/2023 01:03

I opened this thread with loads of ideas, but someone else has got to almost all of them first.

She Hulk's been listed already, but I'd like make a special mention of the scene where Bruce takes her away to teach her how to control her powers, warning her it will take years, and she gets it immediately because it's all about managing anger - and as a woman she already has a lifetime of practice.

Not mentioned yet, I think, Gorillas in the Mist. And the new Star Trek series, Discovery, has some good female characters.

FluentlyExasperatedMadam · 19/12/2023 01:12

Prey

HRTQueen · 19/12/2023 01:26

Wadjda - it’s a film from Saudi Arabia

its a story of a young teenage girl who wants a bike she is determined and fierce regardless of the restrictions around her, shows female strength even in the most difficult of circumstances

the film was directed by a woman who had to direct from a van so she wouldn’t be arrested by the morality police

It’s absolute kickass but not in a western way

A Vigilante! A woman helps free others from domestic abuse, using survival & martial arts skills
