To shamelessly ask for films to watch with kick ass women in

Just that really. IKIABU for misusing the AIBU area but I know there is a lot of traffic here and some kick ass women on here regularly who might know some great kick ass women films.

Context is I’m peri and totally rethinking how I want the last chapters of my life to look. I have been enjoying films and series with women front and centre - doing their thing regardless.

Spy is ridiculous but I enjoyed it.

MooQuackNeigh · 18/12/2023 14:48

Netflix animation but, blue eye samurai has some wonderful women featured in it and it's especially good to see them in a period, highly patriarchal society, fighting oppression. Must love martial arts stuff though.

IfColoursHatedMe · 18/12/2023 14:48

If you're okay with violence then Mad Max Fury Road - Charlize Theron is fantastic in it, and there's some kick ass older ladies in it too.

TooMinty · 18/12/2023 14:49

If you mean kick-ass in a more general, inspirational sense then I loved the film about Ruth Bader-Ginsberg - I think it's called "A Question of Sex"

CoffeeCantata · 18/12/2023 14:50

Frances McDormand in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Misouri.

It's a nuanced film and very moving but also hilarious in parts and Frances McDormand is superb.

mrandmrsrobinson · 18/12/2023 14:51

Out of Africa. Meryl Streep. The music is excellent toooooooooo.

Sadly the Great is not on Channel 4 streaming any more.

Mean Girls and The Devil Wears Prada are good in the fluffy genre.

oh is it not well that's rubbish.

this is a great film I really wasn't expecting to like, I think i watched it on Disney +

Needhelp101 · 18/12/2023 14:54

Aliens! Not only do you have Ripley, but Vasquez too.
"Hey Vasquez, have you ever been mistaken for a man?"
"No. Have you?"

Needhelp101 · 18/12/2023 14:56

Erin Brockovitch is good, Julia Roberts particularly kick-ass in that and also funny.
The Long Kiss Goodnight with Geena Davis and Samuel L Jackson. A bit far-fetched but really entertaining.

The Long Kiss Goodnight is fab. So much (non-romantic) chemistry between Gina Davis and Samuel L Jackson.

ElleLeopine · 18/12/2023 14:56

Hidden Figures

Enola Holmes

steff13 · 18/12/2023 14:56

Legally Blonde

Mrsjayy · 18/12/2023 14:57

aww Hidden Figures is one of my favourites,

TheFlis · 18/12/2023 15:00

If you fancy a true life documentary film, Maiden is incredible and shows an awesome group of inspiring women who refuse to let men tell them what they can and can’t do.

PictureFrameWindow · 18/12/2023 15:01

The Change on C4 is a series where a menopausal woman runs away to the forest, encounters locals. I loved it.

GLOW on Netflix is another series about female friendships. It is hilarious.

MagpiePi · 18/12/2023 15:01

@Verv
I loved Nyad and Three Billboards.

We watched Edge of Tomorrow recently which has Emily Blunt in and she is pretty kick ass.

The Netflix series Wednesday, about Wednesday Addams was fun, and the first series of Fate: The Winx Saga, also Netflix was OK although they are both more aimed at YAs.

Seems we have similar taste in films!
A quiet place (1&2) is some more kick-ass Emily blunt if you havent seen them.

Whatineed · 18/12/2023 15:04

Fargo
The Silence of the Lambs
The Other Women
Get Smart

Echobelly · 18/12/2023 15:04

Shadow in the Cloud https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9691136/ is a very silly film, but does have a truly ass-kicking heroine, and also really bigs up the power of motherhood! It does something it's final shot I won't give away that I think many mums will cheer and I have never seen remotely represented in a film before.

MayMi · 18/12/2023 15:04

Little Women - Netflix Korean drama series about 3 sisters living in poverty who unexpectedly get access to a lot of money, but end up entangled with a really dodgy rich family

Birdbox- Sandra Bullock is amazing in this

NooNakedJacuzziness · 18/12/2023 15:04

Silence of the Lambs - for both Clarice and Catherine Martin, she's stuck down a well but never gives up!

smellmel22 · 18/12/2023 15:05

The Hunger Games
Kill Bill

mildlydispeptic · 18/12/2023 15:09

I heartily second The Long Kiss Goodnight. The very definition of woman kicking ass.

And Copycat -- Sigourney Weaver and Holly Hunter on the trail of a serial killer.

listsandbudgets · 18/12/2023 15:10

For TV series Vigil is brilliant I also like Vera - some do some don't

If you're after an actual film have you seen The Hunger Games - Katniss Everdean definitely comes under kick ass!

You may also like Divergent

If you fancy a Disney try Brave.

If you fancy a book then try the Serrano series by Elizabeth Moon - currently reading it and Serrano is "kick ass" though and through as is her lady boss

NashvilleQueen · 18/12/2023 15:12

The female Ghostbusters is easily the best of the franchise.
