To shamelessly ask for films to watch with kick ass women in

Slightlyboredandseverlyconfused · 18/12/2023 14:22

Just that really. IKIABU for misusing the AIBU area but I know there is a lot of traffic here and some kick ass women on here regularly who might know some great kick ass women films.

Context is I’m peri and totally rethinking how I want the last chapters of my life to look. I have been enjoying films and series with women front and centre - doing their thing regardless.

It’s a Netflix series rather than a film, but I’d recommend a Korean drama called ‘Crash Landing on You’.

Noorandapples · 18/12/2023 14:25

Not a film but the series The Great about Catherine of Russia with Elle Fanning, it's on hulu but also Amazon prime, also various TV pirate places online

tescocreditcard · 18/12/2023 14:26

Noorandapples · 18/12/2023 14:27

Enola Holmes is excellent as well, sherlocks younger sister

TurningtheLightOff · 18/12/2023 14:27

Alien?

About the only two I can really think of.

araiwa · 18/12/2023 14:29

Kill bill

Ted27 · 18/12/2023 14:30

Cher in Mask and Silkwood

Linda Hamilton - Terminator

Sigourney Weaver - Alien

IntoDaWoods · 18/12/2023 14:31

I assume you mean kick ass as in 'has own agency and personality ' as opposed to 'implausibly beats the crap out of grown males without any acknowledgement of super hero powers'. First is not so common, second is the only female role pretty much at the moment.

It's a bit random but I watched chicken run the other night and the nature of the film them being all female meant they were pretty well rounded characters for being made of modelling clay. So I imagine the sequel coming out soon may be similar. There's a love interest but I can't get too worked up about it because the main chicken isn't playing second fiddle to him.

Not a film but the TV series Vigil is pretty good.

Ted27 · 18/12/2023 14:33

Julia Roberts - Erin Brokovich

Mrsjayy · 18/12/2023 14:33

and also I know it was slammed and remade with men <sigh> but the female Ghost busters film has great characters in it and its a bit silly but we enjoyed it..

Ted27 · 18/12/2023 14:36

Meryl Streep - The Post

MoralOrLegal · 18/12/2023 14:37

Many of the Studio Ghibli animations! Mononoke, and Nausicaa in particular.

JustTalkToThem · 18/12/2023 14:38

Steel Magnolias. Fabulous cast of strong women.

Bloody love this film

Milknosugarta · 18/12/2023 14:39

Erin Brockovitch is good, Julia Roberts particularly kick-ass in that and also funny.
The Long Kiss Goodnight with Geena Davis and Samuel L Jackson. A bit far-fetched but really entertaining.

Milknosugarta · 18/12/2023 14:43

Thought of another one, Cher in Moonstruck. Funny and romantic but also kick-ass.

SweetFemaleAttitude · 18/12/2023 14:44

I secretly love the Kill Bill films Uma Thurman is brilliant

Why secretly? 🤔

Another not a film but a series OP, The Queen's Gambit if you've not already seen it.

I've only recently watched it even though it's been out a couple of years. The name put me off as I thought it would be about a posh English woman or something 😂😂.

Verv · 18/12/2023 14:45

Spy - Melissa McCarthy
Kidnap - Halle Berry
Nyad - Jodie Foster

The best of late has to be three billboards outside ebbing, Missouri with Frances Mcdormand tho.

Jasmin1971 · 18/12/2023 14:45

Atomic Blonde with C Theron

BrightNewLife · 18/12/2023 14:45

Do you mean "kick-ass" as in action, or simply powerful inspiring women? If it's the latter try:

Nyad! It's brilliant (Netflix).

Joy (with Jennifer Laurence).

The Exchange (Netflix, series) is about two Kuwaiti women who enter the men-only world of the stock exchange in Kuwait in the 1980s, loved it.

Sadly the Great is not on Channel 4 streaming any more.

Mean Girls and The Devil Wears Prada are good in the fluffy genre.
