To shamelessly ask for films to watch with kick ass women in

Slightlyboredandseverlyconfused · 18/12/2023 14:22

Just that really. IKIABU for misusing the AIBU area but I know there is a lot of traffic here and some kick ass women on here regularly who might know some great kick ass women films.

Context is I’m peri and totally rethinking how I want the last chapters of my life to look. I have been enjoying films and series with women front and centre - doing their thing regardless.

Arrival - brilliant movie with Amy Adams

Hidden Figures- really great movie (based on a true story)about all the women (especially black women) brilliant mathematicians who did calculations for nasa missions in the 60s, starring Taraji P. Henson and Kevin Costner

Both of these are on my Favourite Movies list.

Mona Lisa Smile?

Fried green tomatoes at whistle stop cafe. Thanks for posting this, I will rewatch some of them that I’ve seen and the ones I haven’t seen.

Also if you have Netflix you could try Extraordinary Attorney Woo - the story of an autist Korean lawyer - not exactly kick ass but still impressive

I adore this. One of the best series I've seen in recent years.

I saw Moana again recently and was very impressed

I really loved Good Luck to you, Leo Grand.
Really powerful film. Emma Thompson is brilliant in it.

Promising Young Woman 👌🏻

PermanentTemporary · 18/12/2023 21:13

Broadcast News. It's not as simple as 'she's a kickass woman who does everything her own way and never suffers' but Holly Hunter's character is great anyway. Also makes me think about how it would have been done differently even 10 years later.

[man, sarcastically] 'Hah, it must be nice knowing you're right about everything'
[Hunter, haunted face] 'No, it's awful'

in the same way I think I was probably the only person in the northern hemisphere who ever saw it, but I absolutely loved Gina Davies in Angie.

Scautish · 18/12/2023 21:19

100% promising young woman

also Orange is the New Black. Certainly not all the characters but there are a several of absolute stormers such as Mendoza, Poussey, Taystee, and Doggett. Prisoners may not seem the obvious choice but their backstories really put their lives into context. The series are a bit inconsistent and you have to suffer Piper who is an absolute PITA but I really loved this show.

Warmandbright · 18/12/2023 21:28

Yes Broadcast News. What an EXCELLENT film.

GI Jane, I watched it as a forced recruit and it inspired me! “Suck my dick” you’ll know if you have seen it!!

Mary Poppins

ODFOx · 18/12/2023 21:54

Under the Tuscan Sun. Heroine starts out broken but finds herself.
Mona Lisa Smile. Heroine tries to help some young women find themselves.
Almost everything with Maggie Smith in.

Mumof2NDers · 18/12/2023 22:00

Erin Brocovich. My favourite film x

I heartily second The Long Kiss Goodnight. The very definition of woman kicking ass.

And Copycat -- Sigourney Weaver and Holly Hunter on the trail of a serial killer.

Copycat is one of my favourite films and no one has ever heard of it! yay!

I liked She Said on Sky

Mildred Pierce - the original is good

The Hate You Give

and yes to Alien

furtivetussling · 18/12/2023 22:15

Another vote for 9 to 5. Dolly Parton at her finest.

Also - Spice World. 😂As kick ass as they come, and some brilliant cameos from all sorts of people, including Barry Humphries. Sadly not as Dame Edna though.

"Hey Vasquez, have you ever been mistaken for a man?"
"No. Have you?"

Best line ever!!!
