To shamelessly ask for films to watch with kick ass women in

Slightlyboredandseverlyconfused · 18/12/2023 14:22

Just that really. IKIABU for misusing the AIBU area but I know there is a lot of traffic here and some kick ass women on here regularly who might know some great kick ass women films.

Context is I’m peri and totally rethinking how I want the last chapters of my life to look. I have been enjoying films and series with women front and centre - doing their thing regardless.

TV series Happy Valley for one of the most multifaceted portraits of a kick ass woman with all her flaws.

Slightlyboredandseverlyconfused · 18/12/2023 18:26

This is great. Thank you so much. Lots of ideas. Just what I needed.

and also I know it was slammed and remade with men <sigh> but the female Ghost busters film has great characters in it and its a bit silly but we enjoyed it..

Came in here to recommend this one; I think it's genuinely brilliant and it's a real shame it won't get a sequel. The characters were interesting people with actual personalities rather than stereotypes. They had conversations that weren't about men, fashion or sex.

One of them is a local history buff. There's no reason given for it, she's not following in her father's footsteps or anything like that, it's just what she's interested in. It's so rare for a woman in fiction to be given a hobby like that, and I hadn't realised what a different it makes until I saw it.

And tv dramas:
last tango in halifax
The split

Sucker Punch (2011). Try and watch the Extended Cut if you can. The theatrical version leaves out some important parts. It's my favourite film, ever. Oh, and "open your mind" while watching :)

Rocks. Not women but teenage girls. Rocks has to look after herself and her little brother when their mentally ill mum leaves home. Her relationships with her school friends are well done and the acting is really good, especially from the little boy who must have been about 6. It won a BAFTA but I don't know many people who have seen it. More uplifting than it sounds, although you may need tissues.

Iamblossom · 18/12/2023 18:50

Harley Quinn in the second suicide squad film has one of the best female fight scenes in it I have ever seen.

flowerchild2000 · 18/12/2023 18:51

Oh, and Grace and Frankie. Anything with Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin or Mary Steenburgen.

Iamblossom · 18/12/2023 18:52

Juliette Lewis in Natural Born Killers

Not mentioned so far but my absolute favourite film of all time The Dressmaker, the blackest of comedies with amazing female leads Kate Winslet and Judy Davis. Includes an untraditional love story that in no way outshines the women. Bonus, the costumes are amazing. It really is a hidden gem.

birthdayday · 18/12/2023 19:05

I watched it very long time ago and may be I'm remembering it wrong but -
Jackie Brown (Q Tarantino film)

I’m currently watching a brilliant series on Apple TV called

For All Mankind

One of the alternatives is that more women are involved in space exploration early on and so this series is absolutely jam-packed full of strong women.

It’s a great series anyway. Worth switching to Apple TV for a month or two.

Bristolnewcomer · 18/12/2023 19:55

Oh if you haven’t seen this series on Netflix you should watch it: The Law According to Lidia Poët. All about a pioneering woman lawyer in Italy loosely based on a true story.
