To shamelessly ask for films to watch with kick ass women in

Slightlyboredandseverlyconfused · 18/12/2023 14:22

Just that really. IKIABU for misusing the AIBU area but I know there is a lot of traffic here and some kick ass women on here regularly who might know some great kick ass women films.

Context is I’m peri and totally rethinking how I want the last chapters of my life to look. I have been enjoying films and series with women front and centre - doing their thing regardless.

African Queen - Katherine Hepburn

Now Voyager - Bette Davis

Ooh, B&W films...

Mildred Pierce
All About Eve

although the protagonists are hardly role-models!

And the TV series, "Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries."

FourEyesGood · 18/12/2023 17:13

’Widows’ - Viola Davis is brilliant this.

‘The Shape of Water’ - Sally Hawkins isn’t especially kick-ass at the start, but she quickly becomes mega kick-ass.

Another Guillermo del Toro film - ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ - has two hella kick-ass female characters in Ofelia and Mercedes.

Not an obvious choice, perhaps, but I’ve always found Maria in ‘The Sound of Music’ to be pretty kick-ass - both in the way she stands up to the Captain and the way she defies the Nazis.

‘Promising Young Woman’ is both inspiring and utterly bleak re: kick-ass women.

I don’t think I’ve ever used the term ‘kick-ass’ quite so often in such a short space of time! 😁

I haven't read the whole threads or apologies if this has already been mentioned but the current season of Fargo is amazing. Season 5. Loving the main female character in it so far.

PostItInABook · 18/12/2023 17:25

Not a film but The Walking Dead has some strong female characters.

I thought The Woman King with Viola Davis was fantastic but I'm not sure where to watch it.

I came here to say the same! Best film I’ve seen all year, and (loosely) based on real events. The women warriors have unrealistic strength, of course. But it’s a wonderful inspiring story.

Bristolnewcomer · 18/12/2023 17:28

Oh if we're going black and white films - His Girl Friday is the champ for me

muchalover · 18/12/2023 17:37

Miss Sloane
The help
Hidden figures
The women 1939 version
Hunger Games
New Star wars
Labyrinth
2000 women (old black and white)
Margaret Rutherford as Miss Marple (4 films)
Too many crooks (old b/w film).
St Trinians

LenaLamont · 18/12/2023 17:38

Pretty much anything with Katharine Hepburn in, or Barbara Stanwyck. Bette Davis too - I love all those golden age actresses.

Silence of the Lambs, Alien series, Silkwood, Juno, Fargo, Suffragette, Terminator 2, Wonder Woman, The Marvels (three kick-ass women), Serenity (Zoe kicks ass), Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Contact, Arrival, A League Of Their Own, Molly's Game, Annihilation

Some of my favourites have already been mentioned (Aliens, Terminator, Fried Green Tomatoes). I'll also add Alice in the Resident Evil films and Selene in the Underworld films.

Also, if you prefer a series, some strong female characters in the walking dead, Vikings and Legend of Vox Machina (animated but for adults!)

Summerisawashout · 18/12/2023 17:57
