How often? Settle a debate on what constitutes 'normal' and what's excessive please.

Depends. Once a day in the main rooms and once a week upstairs when the kids were little. Once or twice a week downstairs now the kids have left home. No pets and no shoes.

MILTOBE · 16/12/2023 20:09

It just depends on how many people are living there, whether any are children, whether there are any pets, etc.

Pipistrellus · 16/12/2023 20:09

Weekly to fortnightly

ThreeTreeHill · 16/12/2023 20:10

Downstairs around 3x a week. Upstairs maybe fortnightly?

We do have pets and I think we are probably quite messy people in general

bakewellbride · 16/12/2023 20:10

We try to do it 'properly' (the edges, moving stuff out of the way etc) once a week but I give the living room a quick go over most days.

Are you asking for average?

Because average means the grand total, divided by the number of things. So given that some people will hoover daily and some weekly, I would say the average is about twice a week or so

If you mean the most usual amount people do I would hazard a guess and say weekly.

To me, excessive would be several times a day but to be honest when we had a very sheddy white dog, I hoovered twice a day, it was the only way to keep on top of it

I would have gone for median rather than mean in this instance.

In my house the part of the sitting room where I sit and make a mess gets done when I can no longer bear to look at it, other rooms that aren't used get done if I have visitors due. I put some decs up today but had to hoover up scores of dead flies first.

PinkflowersWhiteBerries · 16/12/2023 20:10

Downstairs daily, except utility which is at least twice per day. Upstairs two or three times a week. We are a shoes off house but my 2 labs seem to ignore that.

BackAgain2023 · 16/12/2023 20:10

I do mine probably 3 times a week downstairs, once a week upstairs. 2 kids and a (non shedding) dog.

Autumn1990 · 16/12/2023 20:11

Daily, I used to do the living room rug a couple of times a day ( wood burner and the bits trailed) but now I’ve got. A carpet sweeper

CattingAbout · 16/12/2023 20:11

Downstairs weekly, upstairs fortnightly. We are all out of the house pretty much full time in the week though, so it doesn't get as messy as if we were all at home

Teebles007 · 16/12/2023 20:11

Weekly/ fortnightly. No kids, no pets.

AgentProvocateur · 16/12/2023 20:12

Once a fortnight when the cleaner comes, but I don’t have children or pets in the house.

ActDottie · 16/12/2023 20:12

I hoover every day. Not every room but kitchen and hallway because we have dogs!!! For other rooms hoovering is weekly. I imagine weekly is the norm.

Nevermind31 · 16/12/2023 20:12

the cleaner does a proper hoover every week. We sweep the kitchen as needed. But we generally spend a lot of time out of the house.

Torganer · 16/12/2023 20:13

We have a cleaner so everything gets a proper vacuum and mop once a week. Sometimes put the robo vac round once a week and then any random spill from cats or toddler.

Gloriousgardener11 · 16/12/2023 20:14

Whole house once a week but heavy traffic areas get an additional vacuum depending on how many people are coming and going.

Sceptre86 · 16/12/2023 20:14

I think the average house is probably once a week or something like that. We have 3 kids but no pets and I hoover the whole house daily. I sometimes hoover the kitchen and living room twice a day. I work part time. My youngest is a toddler prone to dropping food and none of the kids will keep slippers on, they all roam about either barefoot or at best in socks.

Why didn't you start? How often do you think it should be done?

Whothatbe · 16/12/2023 20:15

Once a day, minimum. Once big hoover and the cordless is out regularly. Black shiney tiles. 2 kids. Nightmare.

Nochoiceleft · 16/12/2023 20:16

Downstairs daily. Very hairy dog.
Upstairs less often.

PurBal · 16/12/2023 20:16

Once a week but high traffic areas more often (possibly daily)

Rocknrolla21 · 16/12/2023 20:17

RatatouillePie · 16/12/2023 20:01

Every day!

(But we have two dogs and I hate dog hair on carpets. I'm assuming most people with dogs will vacuum daily)

Same for me. Two dogs. I cheat with my eufy. But between my eufy and my proper hoover I’ll average 3 times every two days

marquislafayette · 16/12/2023 20:20

I think it can depend on the room and the floor

Downstairs is light coloured laminate and ‘heavy traffic’ area so needs doing daily or every two days

Stairs, hall and bedrooms is Grey carpet and you can never really tell when it needs to be vacuumed as dirt doesn’t show so I do it weekly. Old carpets were beige and needed vacuuming constantly.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 16/12/2023 20:20

Once a week normal .

Mumsnet - twice a day.

Merryoldgoat · 16/12/2023 20:21

Weekly all through.

Kitchen and living room have hard floors so swept through the week too.
