To think (generationally) wealthy people are better looking?

LylaLee · 16/12/2023 06:49

Yes, there are many men who would have married the 'homely' neighbour in order to join land or for alliance reasons.

But very often, a wealthy man 'gets to pick' a beautiful woman. Over several generations, surely this results in a better looking family overall. Whereas we plebs occasionally are randomly good looking, but not in the same way as a family with generation after generation of 'beauty injections' to their gene pool.

IME the wealthy choose wealthy partners regardless of looks. I know many who are unattractive🤷‍♀️

Youwantapizzame · 16/12/2023 06:58

I guess beautiful genes mixing with more beautiful genes will keep the beauty going!

But I don't think it's necessarily wealth, more likely the beauty in the first place that's keeping the beautiful people together.

When a wealthy man marries a beautiful woman he's still bringing is genes into the mix, and he might look like a badgers arse (with a fat wallet)

THisbackwithavengeance · 16/12/2023 06:59

Of course.

Good genetics, lots of money and easy life lacking in graft = good looks.

user746016 · 16/12/2023 07:00

i don’t think this is correct in aristocracy but in the upper middle classes I think it is correct. Lots of attractive people will marry for wealth and lifestyle. Money also buys you access to good styling, beauty/pampering activities etc and more relaxation.
I also think you can see poor lifestyle in looks. I can see this in my own extended family. You can spot poverty in kids in particular a mile off. They have a malnourished look (even if overweight) and you can see it in their hair eyes and posture. I am involved in a club where the children have their photos on a chart. You could literally read along the chart and pretty accurately pick the kids from disadvantaged backgrounds just from their headshots (no clothing shown).

When you can afford to look after your teeth, skin and body it helps too.

Fififafa · 16/12/2023 07:00

How do you explain the horse’s teeth? 😂

NeedToChangeName · 16/12/2023 07:01

I think people often gravitate towards people who are similarly (not) attractive, regardless of wealth

And so much is down to lifestyle. Someone who exercises regularly and doesn't drink will likely look better than a heavy smoker who never eats any veg

It’s a life (and generational lives) without financial worry that makes people healthier rather than good genes.

I used to live in Switzerland and you could see the people who’d not had a moments worry about money in their lives. They just radiated health.

allitdoesisrain · 16/12/2023 07:03

I suspect it's more down to affording good nutrition and good health care that is the culprit here. You're going to look better if you can afford these things.

Money doesn't exempt you from stress and personal tragedy and other non-financial hardships. Sure does make it easier to cope with them though!

With or without the botox?

TheaBrandt · 16/12/2023 07:12

Also varies over region. Dh and I have twice visited a particular large city and it really struck us how unattractive the general population looked compared to where we lived. Not pc to say but we couldn’t help but notice.

cerisepanther73 · 16/12/2023 07:13

@LylaLee
Hmm 🤔 let me think Prince William and his wife...

cerisepanther73 · 16/12/2023 07:15

@LylaLee
It depends not allways ...

Timspam · 16/12/2023 07:16

The Greens ? Jeepers lol

CrapBucket · 16/12/2023 07:16

When my kids played sports against teams from private school, there was always a noticeable difference in height. The private school kids being taller.

TheaBrandt · 16/12/2023 07:17

Looks do seem to help you rise up the social scale. It’s happened in my own house! Dd2 mid teen is beautiful confident and good company and has seamlessly whizzed up the social scale - slotted herself in with the offspring of the wealthiest families locally and spends most weekends lolling about in their Manor Houses.

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 16/12/2023 07:17

There's a lot of not particularly attractive old money.

I think times are now changing and the young rich can fish from a wider pool, though.

They can all afford well cut clothes, good dentistry, hairdressers and skincare which always helps. And they can outsource the drudgery. If I had nannies, cleaners and drivers I'd look and feel better too.

Firebird83 · 16/12/2023 07:18

Which city is that @TheaBrandt?

Now now... 🫣

TheaBrandt · 16/12/2023 07:19

I won’t say or the locals will come at me with pitchforks. Once you see it you can’t unsee it though.

youngones1 · 16/12/2023 07:20

Rich men get the best looking girlfriends = better looking children.

In my very middle class professional social circle too. The (few) wives from working class state school backgrounds are invariably beautiful and it’s clearly helped them to move through the ranks.

beautiful people have always had an easier path through life.

roombaclean · 16/12/2023 07:24

Maybe intelligent, professional people but aristocracy? They are reliably unattractive.

BestBadger · 16/12/2023 07:27

They are healthier, have a much longer healthy lifespan and life- expectancy and access to services the rest of us don't. So I don't think it's an inaccurate generalisation.

But it isn't genetic.
