To think (generationally) wealthy people are better looking?

LylaLee · 16/12/2023 06:49

Yes, there are many men who would have married the 'homely' neighbour in order to join land or for alliance reasons.

But very often, a wealthy man 'gets to pick' a beautiful woman. Over several generations, surely this results in a better looking family overall. Whereas we plebs occasionally are randomly good looking, but not in the same way as a family with generation after generation of 'beauty injections' to their gene pool.

Worrying about money is like a constant drain surrounding you all the time and it never lets up. People who dont have this always seem lighter to me.

Egyptian Royal families engaged in incest to keep the bloodline "pure" and to keep all the riches to themselves. This led to all sort of health problems.

Study Presents Evidence of Extensive Inbreeding among Ancient Egyptian Royalty | Ancient Origins (ancient-origins.net)

"Tutankhamun also engaged in incest himself. At the age of 8 or 9, he was married to his half-sister Ankhesenamun, who is believed to have been formerly married to her father, Akhenaten."

The tragedy of Queen Ankhesenamun, sister and wife of Tutankhamun

Everyone has heard of the famous boy king, Tutankhamun, but the name of his beloved sister and wife Ankhesenamun is rarely uttered.

Have you seen them? I don't want to name names and be mean but come on... I can't see anymore beauty there than anywhere else. Having money for dental care, health care, food and access to a wider variety of physical activities would definitely help though.

Not to mention the aristocracy has long been joked about for being ugly and inbred because they marry for wealth and power and don't mix the genes enough.

pepperaunt · 16/12/2023 09:28

I always use wealthy rock stars as an example. They often marry models but their kids inevitably look like dad.

SOxon · 16/12/2023 09:29

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 16/12/2023 08:30

Of course you’re right.

Ever see a story in the paper about a massive divorce settlement fight between a super-rich oligarch/aristo/businessman and his ex? The wives are always stunning, and if the kids are shown they’re always lookers too (courtesy of the wife).

The most extreme example of this phenomenon I can immediately
recall is Harvey Weinstein and his dress designer wife, Georgina Chapman,
beauty and the beast.
Of course, youth and beauty for wealth and power has always been
a trade off, but this lady must have a very strong stomach

Sususudio · 16/12/2023 09:30

The Windsor men must be an exception then. I can't say I find the British aristocracy attractive either.

WenttheDayWell · 16/12/2023 09:35

@user746016 I am from a very poor immigrant background, DH is from a long line of landowners though the last land was sold a few years ago. He did ask me to marry him at his family house they owned a few acres it had woodland and a river running alongside the border. His family were very polite but I was not what they wanted for him. His Mother does now adore me due to me having DS but it took years.

We actually met at work, I did exceptionally well educationally. So whilst he had a childhood of sailing, horse riding and attending one of the best public schools in England I was working in my Fathers Chinese take away and studying, I even had a job in a hotel when doing my A levels.

I was complimented on my looks from a very young age, I’m in my fifties but people are still very nice about them. I bought no money or connections whatsoever. Maybe we are your theory.

Old aristocracy weren't particularly great looking, because they suffered from inbreeding. It affected their health too (haemophilia). If they appeared a bit better presented than the poor that was obviously down to money rather than inherent good looks.

Haemophilia wasn't caused by inbreeding, it was a random mutation that then, because Victoria married her many children to every royal family in Europe, spread across them. But by the 20th century the European royals were marrying out and there hasn't been a European royal born with haemophilia since the early 20th century (George VI's generation).

feralunderclass · 16/12/2023 09:38

The UC are never what I would call attractive. In fact they have more in common looks wise with the malnourished, waif like underclass. And they don't seem to care much about grooming (themselves). What they do usually have though is height, great bone structure, very skinny and confidence. All of these things make it very easy to look polished.

He really was extremely unattractive looks wise - I wonder what she saw in him Wink

@SOxon its mean but true.

It wasn’t meant to be mean? it isn’t as though no one else has noticed.

Sususudio · 16/12/2023 09:41

In most of the world, poor people are skinnier. I guess the link between poverty and obesity is only in the US and the UK.

Sugarsun · 16/12/2023 09:44

Money does usually equal good looks.

You only have to look at before and after photos of celebs.

Money allows you to eat, exercise and sleep better.
As well as buy clothes that fit nicer, expensive face creams, make up and trips to the hairdresser.

but isn't the point that Prince Albert would have had to be a carrier too? Less chance of that happening if you don't marry your cousin.

Thanks for that. I have learned something new then! I always thought it was since my schooldays. Maybe I misinterpreted it.

LylaLee · 16/12/2023 09:53

Maybe a revision of this theory will exclude the aristocracy from this phenomenon, and just have the upper middle class. Families who have opened factories since the industrial revolution etc.

Posh people might not necessarily be attractive - but they ALL seem to have great legs! You never see a royal or aristo with stumpy legs or cankles! How did that happen?

TheaBrandt · 16/12/2023 07:36

Birmingham. Sorry.

I knew you were going to say Birmingham. I went to the NEC a few years back and I've honestly never seen so many unhealthy looking, grossly over weight people.

I'm not trying to be nasty, I dont usually notice how people look, but I just couldn't not see it, and it stuck in my mind.

Like you said, you can't unsee it.

Hopingforbettertimesoon · 16/12/2023 09:58

Interesting thread. Years ago I used to take a train across a city going from a very deprived area to a wealthy one. On the journey the people were noticeably better looking in the wealthier area. I was in my late teens at the time and said about this to my father. His answer was ‘well of course the rich have better diet, healthcare, clothes etc.’. I agree with this. Also generations of better diet etc help I think too. Not sure how but if a baby is born to a well nourished mother this must give them a better chance eg healthy hair, teeth, skin etc.

Also I think some beautiful people in poorer areas or who have very hard lives often seem to loose their youthful bloom in a way those with easier lives don’t. I’ve met some people in middle age who look haggard and generally battered by circumstances who have lovely features that have kind of been ruined by life events.
I also think beauty is only skin deep. Cliched I know but whilst I might think someone is very beautiful I try to look at how they act and their actions.

Well, I don't know about that.

Queen Victoria was basically a weeble!

theduchessofspork · 16/12/2023 10:02

Not especially, I think genes are too random - a bit more height I guess

It’s money itself that provides the gloss - hair, teeth, skin, diet, exercise, heating, medical care, clothes, enough money for a social life, holidays, leisure time and cultural experiences, less likelihood of family breakdown, a job with purpose.

Queen Victoria.

A long time ago, cosmetics were limited and frowned upon anyway (save for prostitutes and actresses) so even the Royals were limited in what they could do to look better, beyond the lack of worry, better food and housing.

I suppose today she'd have had a shitload of stuff done to her face because of her money which may have helped, but going by the basic genetics she was quite ordinary.
