To think (generationally) wealthy people are better looking?

LylaLee · 16/12/2023 06:49

Yes, there are many men who would have married the 'homely' neighbour in order to join land or for alliance reasons.

But very often, a wealthy man 'gets to pick' a beautiful woman. Over several generations, surely this results in a better looking family overall. Whereas we plebs occasionally are randomly good looking, but not in the same way as a family with generation after generation of 'beauty injections' to their gene pool.

What went wrong with tory mp's?

youngones1 · 16/12/2023 08:00

Kate is much better looking than Will but he managed to marry her because he is the heir to the throne. No way would she have gone for him if he was MC.

You can be beautiful without money but it helps.

Imagine living your whole life with excellent nutritious food, private healthcare that means you can see a dermatologist at the first sign of a blemish, great hair products that protect your hair plus hairdressers etc, a lifestyle involving lots of time outdoors in unpolluted environments, a swimming pool & gym at home for exercise. Clothes that fit you well whatever your shape.

Its much easier to look great with all this money. When i was in my late twenties, two high salaries, no kids, DH and i looked pretty good.

snottymcsnotface · 16/12/2023 08:06

I dunno, I wouldn't say the royals are a good looking lot by any stretch of the imagination.

ichundich · 16/12/2023 08:06

What a load of nonsense.

He was better looking when she first met him tbf. Everyone is better looking when they're 21.

Also varies over region. Dh and I have twice visited a particular large city and it really struck us how unattractive the general population looked compared to where we lived. Not pc to say but we couldn’t help but notice.

Where do you live ? 😆

Dacadactyl · 16/12/2023 08:07

I disagree that they are better looking, but they are more polished.

Everything?

Of course.

Good genetics, lots of money and easy life lacking in graft = good looks.

IME wealth is usually linked to hard work.

Money can make you look more polished, groomed etc so that overall you look more attractive but that’s not the same as beauty to me.

How long have you got?

SparrowFeet · 16/12/2023 08:13

@TheaBrandt that's really made me chuckle, and I'm from there. I like to think most of us have quite a self deprecating sense of humour so you might be safe.
Need to get me to another City and see what I'm aiming for.

Haha!

You sound like my BIL (plenty of money in his family for generations too).

naughtynine · 16/12/2023 08:17

Old money if we are talking generational wealth & posh people came from a lot of others hard work tbf!

THisbackwithavengeance · 16/12/2023 08:22

@ChocolateCinderToffee yes of course but I was meaning 12 hours factory or warehouse shifts, traditional hard graft, coal mining, night shifts etc.

Landed gentry might "work" at being a landowner or in any other occupation and make a lot of money but they're not doing hard slog that takes it out off you physically. They don't come home after 12 hour night shifts, and then have to sort out childcare, do the housework and try and fit in a few hours sleep before the next shift. I did that as a single parent. It visibly aged me. Stress ages you. Plus you don't eat well so end up fat because you live on coffee and chocolate to keep going.

Ok an extreme example but if you have money, life is generally easier and smoother. The minutiae of problems and stresses that we - as normal people - deal with in day to day life, they don't have. And it shows on their faces.

Really interesting thread.

I think those that are from wc backgrounds who are blessed with good looks will use their looks to their advantage e.g. becoming a footballer's wife or girlfriend. It is may be a little hidden in a feminist world but there are some that use their looks to 'marry up' and it will always be thus.

I think attractiveness is a premium when it comes to a lot of public facing roles many of which will attract high salaries and despite us feeling like we are being virtuously inclusive we still are conditioned for unconscious bias. Good looking people in my opinionated it easier to rise; as well as being more sexually attractive I think self awareness of your physical demeanour makes you more confident.

I think there is also a phenomenon amongst the wc to over do make up or possibly choose more revealing clothing in general in the hope of substituting for a lack of natural beauty which you can see in the high street of my town.

Wealthy doesn't mean good genetics. Previously you actually need better genetics to survive the year after birth, then a WC life. Whereas the wealthy are kept alive by spending winters in warmer places and affording the best health care and food.

When the royal family have an event tbh it's the ordinary people who are a better mix, looks wise. The same in parliament. Wealthy people find people like them to marry. The obesity epidemic has changed things for this generation, though.

Rightsraptor · 16/12/2023 08:28

You can see poverty etched in people. You see it in their faces, bodies, posture: everything. This can go down the generations.

But I look at photos of my (impoverished & grandmultiparous) grandmother when she was younger than I am now, and I see a very old woman. Her lack of teeth didn't help. I don't think I look anything like that, but I've had a very much easier life than hers with way more advantages.

I remember once being in a park with my toddler daughter who had stripped off down to her pants and she was playing with a very similar girl, but I could immediately see my daughter's advantages in life compared with the other - her glowing skin & hair, her teeth and all the rest. It was a class difference which should have been got rid of years back.

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 16/12/2023 08:30

Of course you’re right.

Ever see a story in the paper about a massive divorce settlement fight between a super-rich oligarch/aristo/businessman and his ex? The wives are always stunning, and if the kids are shown they’re always lookers too (courtesy of the wife).

readymealeater · 16/12/2023 08:33

Old aristocracy weren't particularly great looking, because they suffered from inbreeding. It affected their health too (haemophilia). If they appeared a bit better presented than the poor that was obviously down to money rather than inherent good looks.

Agree with this.
