To find this film disturbing

"Leave the world behind" I find it more like a prediction,/warning on what's to come. Netflix tend to do this. Total shutdown of the internet, pho nes etc and the anarchy that would follow. Could this be a warning of the future? Very disturbing film.

OP posts:
Devonshiregal · 11/12/2023 17:55

No. Watched it and thought it was good but not the warning movie it hoped to be. It kept getting its messages mixed - is it a film about how evil we are and ruining the planet by using its resources or is it a film about china/Russia/Korea hanging up and taking over the world. What was it supposed to be warning us about? There are already shit tonne of wars going on. The internet going down is a very interesting topic but it was hardly explored.

the teslas were thrown in for no apparent reason.
the deer too - rose kept saying “they’re trying to tell us something”…mate, the city is exploding right next to you, if you don’t know what they’re worried about you’re a fool.

It also had the unnecessary racism theme thrown in there to promote problems between black/white people. Literally added nothing to the story - Julia Robert’s character would have had every reason to be suspicious of two strangers turning up in the middle of an apocalypse in the middle of the night demanding to stay regardless of their skin colour. It was just there to cause issues.

And usually Netflix is mainly used to promote cannabis and recreational drug taking more than anything else. It usually goes character is going about their story, takes a break to smoke some weed for no reason, then gets back to the story.

I did actually find it a fun watch - it was thrilling. But definitely hyped up to be something it’s not.

Films and literature have always reflect the fears of the society at the time. I saw the film last night and agree with you that it is very scary. My fear is exacerbated by how vulnerable the world is with Biden in power. I really hope that the next elections bring common sense and Biden and Trump are taken out of the equation. Also, that billionaires stop having so much influence and that countries with dictators are dealt with.

leilani83 · 11/12/2023 17:56

Cats rule the world. Everyone knows that.

**Although this is true.

It was a great film and as you can see its message will tragically be lost on most people. But I think you missed the bit where GH said something along the lines of: "there's no global cabal, no one runs the world and that's the scariest thing of all." I'm inclined to agree with that.

I was just about to say this.

And the ending was very clear. If you’re not used to be spoon fed everything.

Well in a world where people let biological men win women's sporting medals, where police hold furry's leads at Pride, and where a child can be punished for a hate crime for misgendering someone, I actually think we're reaching armageddon..

With Orientals ( Burmese, Siamese &c) at the 🔝 top .
Evil dictators- Have humans completely under their 🐾 paws.

Definitely Bengal cats on top of the command chain. We have a very clever, somewhat evil Bengal cat holding us hostage in our home. He is beautiful and charming though so a perfect dictator.

Still, I can understand why conspiracy theorists worry about the loss of the internet - they'd have to resort to cornering people in Greggs to rant about 15 minute cities, the reset, them people that control everything jews and bison

And people who troll would have to go back to sending anonymous letters with the letters cut out from newspapers and stuck on a piece of paper with a pritt stick instead of just dashing off an abusive tweet/message online

FatOaf · 11/12/2023 18:03

EM Forster wrote about a society entirely dependent on centrally controlled machines, and what happened when the machines broke down, over 100 years ago: The Machine Stops.
Given our almost total reliance on technology that most of us don't understand, and the presence of hostile agents able to sabotage it, it is inevitable that we will face this kind of breakdown in the fairly near future.

The Machine Stops by E. M. Forster - Free eBook

The Machine Stops is a short science fiction story. It describes a world in which almost all humans have lost the ability to live on the surface of...

Yes - poison pen letters - a thing of the past - my mum got one once in the 70's accusing her of being a slattern

The people that run the world.

No one runs the world. That's partly why everything is chaotic.

It would actually be far better for humanity if there was just one global government instead of the 195 or so countries and millions of business all trying to compete against each other.

Well the Obama’s are producers so maybe they have some inside information op 😂

But yes, it was a frightening film. The point of the entire film was that it’s the uncertainity that is the true nightmare. When we don’t know what is happening, what to do or having no access to information.

plumtreebroke · 11/12/2023 18:08

People have been writing dystopian books and films forever. 1984, the War of the Worlds, the Time Machine, Star Wars, Star Trek, The Matrix, Zombies, so many scary ones I can't even remember the names of. I've watched hundreds of them and I quite like them, some are a nasty possibility of a future if we're not sensible others are just nuts but fun (nuclear war, starvation, alien invasion, you name it) although we have past the dates the old ones were meant to happen by! If these are all meant to be giving away some secret plan, it's a pretty well known secret plan with thousands of optional extras.

It is a bit like saying I saw a film about a serial killer and now I know all my neighbours are serial killers and they accidentally let their secrets out in this film. But I'm onto them now...

startquitting · 11/12/2023 18:09

Don’t watch The Road, op..

ManateeFair · 11/12/2023 18:09

this was a great opportunity to bring someone in and instead people ostracised them and pushed them out. Is OP going to go and research actual sources of information or go back to Conspiracy TikTok or whatever? She's going to go where she's most comfortable, and that's unlikely to be here now because people couldn't talk about this like adults so great success everyone for pushing someone back towards the dodgier parts of the internet

LOL. When someone starts muttering about 'the people who run the world' and 'media conspiracies', they are absolutely not going to be persuaded to 'go and research actual sources of information' whatever some people on Mumsnet tell them. In fact, when you try to counter their points politely and rationally, and point them towards reputable sources, they will invariably say 'LOL, no, I've DONE my research and unlike you, I'm not fooled by the mainstream media! It's all a conspiracy and you won't get the truth from your so-called experts. Wake up, sheeple!!'

Stokey · 11/12/2023 18:09

@Devilsmommy the ending of the book was pretty annoying. Literally didn't explain anything so sounds like it may be staying close to the original.

I didn't love the book as a whole - it was very east coast America. There was a bit about the guy doing yoga with his penis, which is my main memory.

ghostyslovesheets · 11/12/2023 18:10

The Girl With All The Gifts and The Last Of Us probably got it right - nature, especially fungus, will get the end of us - I do my bit by eating lots of mushrooms to keep the population down.

Yes I wondered just why the Obama's got involved with this particular film. To me, it's like they're telling us what's ahead.

@Stokey well I will give the book a swerve then because it does sound like it's the same as the film. Thanks for the heads up 😃

Thought the Production and acting was great , didn’t think much of the plot - however I am overexposed to watching stuff on Netflix so it might be more “ watcher fatigué”

I do think it interesting that the Obamas are exc producers as I think it’s interesting to think of a nation that is a « superpower » with much assurance of their own safety and dominance, actually being victims of said attack and considering how that may play out for normal people..

I think it’s more scary to think about what’s going on in the world around us and how little ability we have as people to bring about peace or change the narrative for millions of victims globally.

I think people in positions that could make change happen probably sit up at night risk assessing these kind of scenarios .. and are probably aware of how close we come.. all the time…

skibiditoilet · 11/12/2023 18:15

the Obamas produced it - part of the global elite. Maybe OP is onto something 👀 or maybe they are just on something

There are all sorts of possibilities of our future. Noone knows. Not the Obama’s, not us. Take the film for what it is, the message of us having to help each other. Like the ending with the Friend’s music I’ll be there for you. Try and focus on that instead.
