"Leave the world behind" I find it more like a prediction,/warning on what's to come. Netflix tend to do this. Total shutdown of the internet, pho nes etc and the anarchy that would follow. Could this be a warning of the future? Very disturbing film.

OP posts:

It wasn't that good, I had high hopes for it because it had an excellent cast, if it had been unknowns in it I wouldn't have been so disappointed.

Cats rule the world. Everyone knows that.

not til they grow thumbs 😂

Doingtheboxerbeat · 11/12/2023 18:42

I love films like this and watch loads of dome mongering stuff on Infographics via YouTube - but I don't think I would feel the same if I was young or if I had children 🥺, who knows.

This thread reminded me I was watching this in the bath the other day and still had half hour left on it, thanks!

I don't think it's a warning as such, but a definite possibility.

I wouldn’t bother, my husband fell asleep for the last 30 minutes and I was a bit jealous of him to be honest. Told him not to bother watching the ending, was a major let down.

GlobalCitz · 11/12/2023 18:43

I haven't watched it yet, but Michelle and Barack Obama are the Executive Producers, so it must be a conspiracy nut's wet dream!

What?

I just watched a video of papers falling from the sky in Gaza

Have you watched Blackout Britain on YouTube? I think that is more likely to happen if there was a blackout.

Passingthethyme · 11/12/2023 18:45

I haven't seen it but it does make me wonder if people have actually thought about this. Just from very basics like money and communication, even if not sinister would have a huge impact and fairly quickly (and looking at how people were in lockdown, yes anarchy probably would ensue)

@ghostyslovesheets

quaint little slur, time to reclaim this for all the slatterns

stoppingby · 11/12/2023 18:49

I really enjoyed it and because it was directed by the Obamas it made me think. Obviously as a president he would have been party to the most secret intelligence in the world and I'm sure there are plenty of brainy people out there trying to anticipate what enemy, rogue states will do next.

But no I don't think it's a 'warning' but I do think it could serve as a question about what we'd do if something like that happened? What would we do if everything was taken out by a cyberattack? For most of us that means no phone, no texting, no banking, no TV, no sat nav, no googling, no Apple Pay etc.

It's worth thinking about but not worth losing sleep over.

You mean to tell me Netflix are trying to take over the world.

I thought they already had?

Oh I see. This was in the film.

Weird. They’re white in the real version.

BeardyButton · 11/12/2023 18:52

Christ this thread is depressing!

OP - the world is burning. Yes, resources are scarce. Inequality is at unsustainable levels. War and destruction abound. BUT this situation was not caused by some global elite who pull our strings. Honestly the chaos is too thoroughgoing for that. It is caused by US. By US buying too much shit and moaning about the lack of ripe avocados in Tesco and that soon we won’t be able to travel to Spain in the summer. And WE could solve it. If we were willing to take a massive drop in living standards and tackle inequality.

BUT we consistently take the easy way out. Blame immigrants and the scary global elite and vote in ridiculously self destructive ways (Brexit anyone). It’s so much easier to blame the boogey man than claim our own agency and responsibility.

Balloonhearts · 11/12/2023 18:55

I think the Harry and Megs documentary demonstrated that Netflix is primarily used to promote a load of old bollocks.

Wasn't the world supposed to end in 2012 with the moon crashing into us or something?

User2856948 · 11/12/2023 18:56

Netflix didn't write the book anyway

PonkyPonky · 11/12/2023 18:57

I really liked it. Everyone I know who has seen it said the ending was disappointing and left too many unanswered questions. But I thought all the questions got answered and nicely wrapped up at the end. I would love to see the story told from a different perspective as well. It’s definitely thought provoking but it hasn’t made me paranoid enough to start stockpiling radiation tablets

User2856948 · 11/12/2023 18:57

The Obamas didn't write the book either

HarrumphryBogart · 11/12/2023 18:58

Why would they tell us the plan?

byteme1011 · 11/12/2023 19:01

I really liked it - thought the ending was a wee criticism/comment about distracting ourselves with convenience/tech to ignore the bigger issues going around us - I did watch this last night while my street was flooding (over exaggeration but very heavy rain) though haha

Threewheeler1 · 11/12/2023 19:02

noooooooo · 11/12/2023 18:41

not til they grow thumbs 😂

My cat has just swung around in his high-backed leather swivel chair and said, between puffs on his cigar, that thumbs are overrated...

Sparehair · 11/12/2023 19:03

It’s based on a book, but the book is quite literary and focuses mainly on the relationships between the characters - a lot of the dramatic scenes didn’t happen in the book. It’s much more subtle and the ending is deliberately vague. The Kevin Bacon character is much more central.

Scirocco · 11/12/2023 19:07

Yes, OP, the shadowy secret people controlling the world have a masterplan for the future so evil and convoluted that they made it into an easy-to-follow show on a popular streaming service.

NextPrimeMinister · 11/12/2023 19:07

NooNakedJacuzziness · 11/12/2023 17:04

Wait til Skynet becomes self aware and launches Judgment Day - hasta la vista baby. Although I think that happened in 1997.

Well Netflix needs to get it's own house in order before it orchestrates the end of civilization.

It doesn't even have all 6 Terminator films on it's platform.

alpenguin · 11/12/2023 19:07

There is an element of truth to the fact that without access to current technologies we’d struggle with basic distance communications - it’s not a Netflix conspiracy tho. They re not prophets 😂

try extrapolations on Apple TV if your looking for potentially prophetic tv to freak out over
