To ask if you have sex on your period

I had a day out with a friend yesterday and we had a lot of girl chat. Somehow or another I said something along the lines of 'but I was on my period, so obviously we didn't have sex'. My friend was genuinely surprised by this and that I've never had sex on my period, ever. Not with DH, nor anyone prior. Honestly, it's not something I've even considered doing, kind of like one of the rules of life, death, taxes and can't have sex on your period. My friend says this is not her experience at all and says bar maybe the first few days when it's at it's heaviest and she feels the most uncomfortable, she and her DH have sex as much as they otherwise would.
I spoke about it with DH to ask his thoughts and he's in the same boat as me, says he's just always assumed you don't do that and the few guy friends he has that he does talk about sex with, they don't have sex with their wives or girlfriends on their period either.
I don't actually have many friends that I speak this openly about sex to so was just wondering what the wise women of Mumsnet think.

Honestly, I feel like crap the first few days of my period but after that, I feel my normal self and it annoys me that I 'can't' have sex for the next 4 or 5 days so maybe this is something I need to reconsider but it's something I've not even considered before, I just always assumed it not done and never challenged it. Now I feel a bit foolish as I can't now work out how I really feel about it. DH says he's up for giving it a go if I'm comfortable with it but I don't know if I am yet.

Agree that you should just do what you like, it's not a 'rule'. I would on lighter days but DH hates it so we don't.

Genuine question for people saying about doing oral. Are your periods so light that it would be highly unlikely that blood would get involved? Or does the giver not mind the taste of blood/goes all in regardless of how heavy the flow is?

it just doesn’t bother me, nor any woman I’ve ever been intimate with. Honestly, if someone is using a tampon and takes it out there’s not a lot of blood. It’s not ‘messy’ in that sense, you can always use the loo first etc or clean yourself a little if you feel the need to.
And as for the ‘taste’ of blood, it’s slight tang if anything… nothing like that scene in ‘ Saltburn’ that had me and my gay friend in stitches in the cinema… not very realistic IMHO!

With my ex we had period PIV sex every now and again but we didn't have much sex anyway so we probably didn't on heavy days, although it wasn't a conscious decision on my part.

I have VERY heavy periods with lots of clotting (sorry) but my new partner is just crazy about oral sex and is unfazed by whatever he encounters whilst down there. It took me a little while to feel comfortable with it but he was ridiculously sensitive and reassuring so I'm now totally on board and find it much easier to orgasm when I'm on.

We always need to protect the bed anyway so it really makes no difference from that score.

I don't get my period anymore but back when I did I was a big fan of the blood sports.

It’s not quite like that! But women are flipping gorgeous and going down on one is, quite frankly, one of life’s most rewarding pleasures… period or no period.

Parter says he doesn't actively like it, he's just ambivalent. It makes very little difference to anything as far as he's concerned. He's not squeamish so if he comes across chunks (his phrasing) he doesn't make a fuss and carries on. I"m not sure how he deals with it. I've never asked and don't think I need to! 😂

@Ygfrhj I’m surprised you left the tampon in for oral, honestly! My ex always used to like a bit of foreplay, I’d take the tampon out and then we’d do whatever else without any blood getting on anything. But even when I was menstruating properly my flow was very light back then so I’d probably have left the tampon in for multiple loo visits and that puts the string at least in the line of fire, as it were.

However, I did read many years ago that there are men who get pleasure from drinking or tasting human blood. Yeuch! I stopped reading quickly and, frankly, wish I never had.

I can understand people in the full, new flush of desire having sex during their period (not oral), but when a couple is living together and maybe has been for a while, surely it is nice to have a break sometimes and a period is a natural break. It doesn't hurt to go without for a while, in fact it's great when you re-commence sex.

No, not at all. I just prefer men who are genuinely attracted to women in all their femininity and aren't squeamish about a bit of a blood. That's a bit like a teenage boy in my mind, recoiling from something that is totally normal and natural.

Can’t agree more. I love the way my DH just goes down on me. Period or not. He never thinks of me being dirty, nor am I.
