To let DS stay off school on his birthday?

Niffler29 · 10/12/2023 18:53

DS has asked if he can have the day off school on his birthday. He’s 12 and in his first year of high school so no exams coming up or anything. No issues at school/life in general, he’s a good kid. My initial response is no but if I’m being honest, I’ve never worked on my birthday in my life and the company I work for these days gives a an automatic holiday on your birthday so I can kind of see his point.

AIBU to consider it? I think I am but would like other people to confirm so I feel less bad🤣.

Absolutely take it off. Most I know IRL would. But usually whatever the response is IRL for stuff like this mumsnet is the reverse opinion

IRL I know no one who would do that.

I would, he's 12 and it's one day. Hardly the end of the world

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/12/2023 19:44

Send him to school

What will he do

His friends will be at school. You I assume at work

MissBuffyAnneSummers · 10/12/2023 19:45

Mine have tried that one on. I always say no.

Zwellers · 10/12/2023 19:45

Just don't come back in 5 or so years complaining your ds can't hold down a job as he only goes in when he feels like it and can't understand why he can't take a day off because its his birthday/too hot/he needs to some shopping etc etc

muddyford · 10/12/2023 19:45

Not sure when this started, as it certainly wasn't a thing when I was a child, but if he should be at school that day he should go.

Pianodiano · 10/12/2023 19:50

Ain’t the world boring. Life is short and you don’t have many birthdays as a kid. You’d not remember the random day at school but you would remember a great birthday with your mum. Nobody should have to work or go to school on their birthday if it can be avoided :)

Beezknees · 10/12/2023 19:51

YABU, I've never let my DS do this. Not all workplaces do it either so it shouldn't be an expectation.

Would you though? I can safely say I don't remember a single one of my birthdays as a kid, and I was never at school for mine as it fell in school holidays.

Same for me, mine fell in the holidays however I remember most of them as we built some traditions to do. I do seem to have a good long term memory though so maybe that’s why.

underneaththeash · 10/12/2023 19:05

I don’t know anyone who does that.
we live in quite a wealthy, high achieving (through hard work) area. So maybe that’s the difference?

"High achieving (through hard work)"

😂😂 Let me guess, you are all self made with a small loan of a million dollars?

Haha what?

Riverstep · 10/12/2023 19:57

No chance 🤣. We just do something the weekend after the birthday.

theduchessofspork · 10/12/2023 19:58

No. If everyone did that the teacher would be spending her life catching kids up.

I know you meant it well, but don’t be a nob

Most people do work on their birthdays and celebrate at the weekend

What on earth is joyless and uptight about saying a child should go to school during term time.

If every child took their birthday off it would make teaching classes and lessons incredibly difficult and patchy. If you're a teacher surely you can see this.

OP yes you're absolutely being unreasonable and irresponsible and teaching poor life skills if you allow a child to skive off school for their birthday.

A single missing kid in a class twice a month won't make a bloody different to the classes. How sad that life has to be only about school and work. Live a little

Don’t be ridiculous

If everyone did this it adds a load of work for the teaching staff catching kids up.

He’ll remember a birthday celebration just as well on a Saturday

No. DH lived in a small council flat in Northumberland with an abusive father. I’m from
Stockport.

Lostinbrum · 10/12/2023 20:01

No chance both my kids are during term time and they always go in and take sweets. We go out for dinner after school and do something nice or have a party on a weekend before or after. I don't take my birthday off work n most ppl I know irl don't either

It would make a difference to the teacher who had to catch all these kids up and already had way to much to do.

You can live a little on Saturday

Teachers don't catch kids up after short sicknesses so why would they for a random day off? It would be impossible to catch up every kid after an absence.

CurlewKate · 10/12/2023 20:07

Well, I have high achieving adult children and one day when they were about 10 and 6 on a whim I drove straight past school and we went to the beach. They still remember it.

WandaWonder · 10/12/2023 20:07

No because no but also if we went down that road there would always be a reason to have days off
