like going on holiday with them, my dh gets on great with my dad and when they do for a drink they go together, and they both love fishing. we all love to go to majorca on holiday so we go together, and we have a ds nearly 2 and we get alot of babysitting help from them. me and my mum enjoy going to aquaaerobics so we go together.
but people in our village have been calling us odd.
just because we are really close.
i hope im this close to ds when he grows up.
are they just envious?
or is it because we live next door to them? them amount of times people of said oh i couldn't do that[ie live next door] in a snotty sniffy way

If you're happy, I don't see there's a problem.

We're 400 miles and 700 miles away from our parents which works well for us

They're just jealous. I think it is lovely.
DH is very close to his parents and we have been on holiday with them a few times.
Wish we could afford to live next door to them!

TooPanickyToThinkOfNewName · 13/03/2008 13:06

Nah they're jealous

Personally I'd kill my mother if I lived next door to her though!

WaynettaSlob · 13/03/2008 13:09

weirdo

OrmIrian · 13/03/2008 13:09

That is so stupid. Before Dh and I had children I used to go on hols with my parents about once a year. They had a holiday house and I would go with them to help sort things out ready for the rental season. DH wasn't all that keen on it. On one trip back we met a NZ couple who were so unpleasant. Made me feel like I had some sort of arrested development because I liked my parents' company.

anorak · 13/03/2008 13:09

That's village life, isn't it? People get bored in villages and have to invent fodder for gossip. I lived in a village for 8 years just now and I was getting bored with it in the end.

Your set-up sounds enviable and lovely. Take no notice of these people.

spotthedog · 13/03/2008 13:10

well, i did think it was just jealousy

Spot i think that is really lovely. I couldnt live next door to MY mother, although i do live in the next road. If people are making those sort of comments it is because they are jealous. Stuff em.

DarthVader · 13/03/2008 13:12

Assume those people can't stand their own parents so can't understand that some people love to spend time with their parents.

It seems to me that getting on really well with your parents is better than not getting on with them!!!

It is unusual to live next door to your parents, that is just a fact, no more, no less.

I would just smile and say that your family gets on very well together and that it works really well for babysitting etc. Then they will be jealous!

Take no notice. As long as you're happy, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

EyeballsintheSky · 13/03/2008 13:14

My parents are about 20 mins away we see them all the time. My brother lives across the road from us. We often go on holiday with parents and regularly go to Center Parcs with my brother and his lot. Last year we all went away together and it was fab. People who call you odd are just jealous because their family hates them!

spotthedog · 13/03/2008 13:26

yes i think its also, a village thing, there always has to be someone thats classed as the village idiot and village oddballs etc.

rude cow.
what should i say to her next time i see her?.

fuk* off should work

kerryk · 13/03/2008 13:40

i had the same thing from a "friend" last year as well btw. i dont see my parents a lot but they paid for me and my girls to go to paris with them for a week as dh was abroad with the army then at new year they rented out a huge mansion so that the whole family could spend it together.

i think its safe to say that she was just jealous, the only thing this friends mum has given her is a std but even that was passed on through her husband

squigglywig · 13/03/2008 13:41

Bloody Hell! Ask her if she has any, going around being so rude like that!

If it works for you and yours then it's nobody else's business how much time you either do or don't spend with your folks.

Village twitter. Aargh!

mustrunmore · 13/03/2008 13:42

Bizarre that people atually say things like that to you, rather than just behind your back! I'd agree with the vilage thing; so glad I live in AnonymousLondon now!
Just ignore them.

spotthedog · 13/03/2008 13:46

squigglywig, i might actually say that to her.
