Shared by an elderly friend of my mum’s on Facebook. I find it offensive but I’m debating whether it’s worth the hassle of saying so.

It’s certainly not kind, it’s condescending and misogynistic. I’ve known her my whole life and I’ve never seen her be unkind before, actually she did my mum a great kindness many years ago, so I’m not looking to be confrontational or mean.

I just think shit like this being unchallenged makes the world a little bit worse off every day.

i ignore stuff like this posted by friends of friends, but if anyone asked me directly what i think? I say "yeah i don't perpetuate misogynistic patriarchial crap, thanks" and leave it at that

(or post pictures of fat blokes with overhanging hairy stomachs and builders cleavage and ask if that would be ok)

stayathomer · 29/11/2023 19:42

She may have shared in error or something. I disagree with the generational thing people are saying- all ages say crazy stuff!!

thinslicedham · 29/11/2023 19:49

The FB post is stupid and embarrassing, but so are those shorts.

Lots of older people will agree with the post IMO, the shorts are just someone very desperate for attention and approval..

Alwayswonderedwhy · 29/11/2023 20:09

I would ask her if she's been hacked.

I also tend to 'hide' the less intelligent people on FB so I don't have to look at crap like this.

The post isn't commenting on whether women in short shorts are attention seeking. It's a man telling women to cover their bodies from all men in order to reserve the sight of them for the one man who will acquire ownership rights to them. I'm sure that even people who are offended by short shorts and/or women who's clothes draw attention to them may not fully agree with that as a sentiment, if they understood it.

And so what if they are? Should they wear something they don't like in order to gain your approval?

Women are allowed to swear. You must be new round here.
Although swearing at someone is frowned upon. I do love a bit of hypocrisy in the evening though.

Shadowonasun · 29/11/2023 21:05

That FB post is a load of dinosaur-y patronizing shite. That said, I find women dressed like that sad, pathetic and desperate. Why would you walk around with half of your butt on show like a bitch in heat? Don't tell me it's for 'comfort', thick denim halfway up your crack is not 'comfortable'. If sexy is what you after, that can be done way more classy and alluring than sweaty denim up your ass in lidl. I'm entitled to my opinion as much as the next person.

MarryingMrDarcy · 29/11/2023 21:06

Shit like this is why I don’t have Facebook!

Imagwine · 29/11/2023 21:10

I found it quite funny in a roll your eyes kind of way.

Just ignore crap like that.

And people are entitled to find your opinion groundless, ridiculous, ignorant and a reflection on you and nobody else.

5128gap · 29/11/2023 21:17

OP you'd have probably got a more focused discussion on the question you posed had you included the text and omitted the picture. Because if that woman had a strategy for world peace tattood on her arse and you were inviting opinions on that, you'd have had people think the most important issue was the length of her shorts.

LynetteScavo · 29/11/2023 21:21

@saraclara - i didn't mention sexism? Confused

I don't ignore all of the older generation's posts on SM! GrinGrinGrin

But the ones I disagree with I usually do. And the person who posted this was described by the OP as elderly.

If they'd been described as a youngster, I may have said that I usually ignore teenagers posts on these things.

There are certain times there is no point in responding to something, and yes a persons age may dictate that response. I am able to take into consideration a persons stage as well as age, if I know them and we communicate on SM.

Ready your post of 19:23. Why is mentioning that your mother is elderly of any relevance?

Onelifeonly · 29/11/2023 21:30

Best to ignore. Age isn't relevant. Anyone can post something offensive but responding seems pointless. I only do that occasionally on those posts that turn up from an account I don't know and then only if I'm really bothered by it, in the vain hope some of those agreeing/ liking/ upvoting might think twice about their agreement with the poster.

It's what the internet does though- encourages people who hold the same views to throng together and support each other unthinkingly. True debate that doesn't descend into two polarised 'sides' is rare.

NonPlayerCharacter · 29/11/2023 21:33

Isn't it interesting how the person who created the post apparently dislikes women wearing scanty clothes but still included a rear photo of a woman in skimpy shorts, most likely taken without her knowledge or consent? And how many people who are morally outraged by such attire were somehow drawn to a discussion about it?

I agree. It seems hypocritical to slut shame a woman and simultaneously make more people stare at her.

OP is kind of doing the same though. There was no need to post the woman's body. It's invited comments about her body.

OP's not offended by the woman's clothing and it was part of the post. I think it's important to see how those who would lecture women about dressing conservatively are still happy to display female arses, without even getting permission!

Wouldn't it be nice to live in a world where we judge people by how they treat others rather than what they wear? But that's not such a quick and easy way to congratulate ourselves.

ToWhitToWhoo · 29/11/2023 21:47

It is really vile and victim-blaming. However, it's a meme; she did not write it, and may not even have read it!

I would probably ignore it, unless it becomes a pattern.

I have only twice made an issue of meme-postings myself. Both concerned the posting of superficially innocent memes being used as 'bait' by far-right groups: one from Britain First about nativity plays, and one by the BNP about Remembrance Day. In both cases, I pm'd the posters, and they removed the posts.

I hate the way cleavage looks on most women

@OhNoOhNo Lol IDK how you can say that. Maybe older women if their cleavage skin is weathered looking? Otherwise I can never object to (looking at) cleavage TBH. Smile

But I'm well aware that if I get my baps on display (which has always needed a lot of wire and padding) I'm signalling that I'm in theory Approachable by men. In fact, that's why I do it, otherwise I look too sensible.

porridgeisbae · 30/11/2023 00:58

I've thought this recently- that's exactly what it probably is, isn't it? Young, horny people. That's why people dress more sexually when they're younger maybe. It's all driven by horny hormones (unless it's also partly by daddy issues or something for some people.)

I think it might be my ADHD/sensory issues 🤣

When my mum had a cyst between her breasts she wanted me to look at, I was cringing, it’s just a weird part of the body, with the breast plate and heart so near.
