Shared by an elderly friend of my mum’s on Facebook. I find it offensive but I’m debating whether it’s worth the hassle of saying so.

It’s certainly not kind, it’s condescending and misogynistic. I’ve known her my whole life and I’ve never seen her be unkind before, actually she did my mum a great kindness many years ago, so I’m not looking to be confrontational or mean.

I just think shit like this being unchallenged makes the world a little bit worse off every day.

Any one that dresses like that, deliberately showing their buttocks will not mind what anyone is saying about them.

This. What a choice of clothing! Those shorts aren't exactly...erm...aspirational, are they?

But each to their own.

Bernardmanning · 30/11/2023 17:05

Can we not collectively come up with something similarly shite involving men? Perhaps in the form of a raw chicken requiring tenderising and baking in a hot oven in order to become paletable to women? I'm sure that the MN hive mind can come up with something worthy of social media circulation.

The way to fix misogyny is not to write shitty objectifying memes about men.

How are they not aspirational? I aspire to my butt looking good enough to wear those shorts. 😂

JWhipple · 30/11/2023 17:41

I'm in a few Facebook tag groups, including one called "what inanimate objects are women being compared to today" posts like this are shared and ripped to shreds in there. Good for the soul.

They don't need to be aspirational (what on earth does that even mean in this context?). They're clothes, someone likes them and chose to wear them as is their perfect right. Don't like it, find something aspirational to gaze upon.

porridgeisbae · 30/11/2023 18:40

I don't think that woman's shorts are anything like the worst the world has to offer in the way of short-shorts. They probably deliberately didn't choose something hugely outrageous for the meme, because the sort of people who share that meme wouldn't want to even look at/share a pic of thong-shaped shorts or something.

IDK I think people like to think their outfits are divorced from people making any sort of judgement of any kind (or should be.) But of course they're not.

All they're thinking about is if it looks trendy, or hot.

Hammy65 · 30/11/2023 19:02

Leave it. I’m probably of the same generation as this lady and I’m sure she meant no harm. Least said soonest mended.

CaptainJ · 30/11/2023 19:34

Mute post. IMO.

I do as much counter nudging as possible online. Mute people I don't want to hear from, mute issues I don't want to see etc.

I've really benefited from Googling diggers and aggregate recently - no more tempting fancy french clothing adds for things!!

housethatbuiltme · 30/11/2023 20:01

Yes its offensive.

I don't want to be 'mined' and if any man went to my parents not me to ask to date me he would be getting told a swift 'fuck off, my parents don't own me'. I am not land, you cannot buy me, steal my good stuff and sell it.

On what planet did someone think this was acceptable to say?

It also says 'you will attract many illegal miners to come and illegally exploit and take it' way to promote victim blaming in rape because of how a woman dresses.

DonnaBanana · 30/11/2023 20:09

It is quite interesting that on MN we support people who want to wear hot pants in public but if someone lets their kid use an iPad at a meal or leaves their 11 year old alone for thirty minutes to poop down the shop we’re suddenly justifiably offended by it

pollymere · 30/11/2023 20:19

It's trite and nauseating...

Why can you not disapprove of screens at meals or leaving children alone while also supporting grown adults' right to dress as they wish?

NickyWiresSunnies · 30/11/2023 21:05

Offensive? No. Though I really can't be arsed with a staring contest versus unblinking (nearly) bare buttocks when I've only popped in for the paper & 20 cigarettes.
The poem is risible toss, but there's a multitude of beliefs in play these days. And FB hosts bait from them all.

threatmatrix · 01/12/2023 01:04

Oh dear, everyone triggered, it’s funny get a grip. Typical mumsnet

timesaretight · 01/12/2023 01:05

I think she's wrong, but she is allowed her opinion.

kneehightoacat · 01/12/2023 06:45

It winds me up and would want to comment
too

best to ignore it though. (Speaking from experience)

it may help to unfollow her so you don’t see these posts any more

TheAverageJoanne · 01/12/2023 06:56

I'm assuming the woman on the picture posed for the original meme? It's embarrassing whichever way you look at it. The woman who shared it is an example of her generation I guess.

rachellovesdouglas · 01/12/2023 07:41

When my Mother first joined social media she started sharing what she thought were nice pictures and motivational posts from Britain First! I had to explain what Britain First was and she was horrified about it. Older people dont always realise what they are doing. She is only allowed one like and comment per week on any of the teenagers posts as well after she was offended when eldest blocked her because of random commenting.

TheAverageJoanne · 01/12/2023 08:35

@rachellovesdouglas We get this with an aunt. Not Britain First, but sharing things that are cringe worthy. Also every comment on a post ends "Love Aunty Pam xx" as she doesn't realise her name shows anyway! She's only 64 though! Mind you she's been out of the workplace since 1990 so lost touch with the world!

I'd take a bet that some people find the shorts offensive AND the screens at meals. That some would leave their kids AND find screens at meals offensive. That some are OK with all three. That some find all three offensive. There's probably even some who think Elvis works in their chippy. Do you see where I'm going with this...?

T1Dmama · 01/12/2023 10:00

I read stuff on Facebook everyday I disagree with. If I commented on all of it I wouldn’t have any Facebook friends.
We all have different opinions, part of being a good person is excepting that.. she’s from a different generation to you, and previous generations can’t handle ladies walking around with their boobs and arses practically on show…

I sit on the fence of ‘if you’ve got it flaunt it’ and ‘leave something to the imagination’….
But yes the post wasn’t great to share, but I can see how she’s maybe read it along the lines of seeing that photo and thinking no one needs to dress like they’re out clubbing to pop to Tesco … but each to their own!

100% just let it go, it’s not worth your effort… you also won’t change her opinion, I’ve been trying to stop my nan using offensive terms for years (decades) and she still uses them… I just raise my child to know that language is racist and wrong and we ignore her comments now.

FluffyBenji23 · 01/12/2023 10:35

I'd mute her for 30 days and then if there is a repeat of anything like this unfriend her!

HeidInTheBaw · 01/12/2023 12:20

Exactly!
