Shared by an elderly friend of my mum’s on Facebook. I find it offensive but I’m debating whether it’s worth the hassle of saying so.

It’s certainly not kind, it’s condescending and misogynistic. I’ve known her my whole life and I’ve never seen her be unkind before, actually she did my mum a great kindness many years ago, so I’m not looking to be confrontational or mean.

I just think shit like this being unchallenged makes the world a little bit worse off every day.

This meme isn't intended to be humorous; it's intended to be morally righteous.

That's some odd idea of humour

I enjoy the mix of biblical talk and science, they rarely cross over 😂. I find it more silly than offensive though (and a load of shit)

I must say, I recognise that it's nothing to be proud of but I find it quite entertaining seeing posts like this on my Facebook as it's always entertaining to see who's older relatives are the most batshit usually mine

Elastica23 · 30/11/2023 05:50

Depends how well I know someone. With most people I'd just unfollow for something like that. I find here far worse than Facebook at times. At least you can choose who you follow on Facebook and what groups you join.

SamphireAndSalmon · 30/11/2023 05:58

I think you'll feel bad if you upset her. Just leave it.

The problem is that people who hold these views are not batshit. They are totally normal people, out in society, who are harming women all the time besause of their misogynistic views.

There are loads of them around right now, many posing as women.

determinedtomakethiswork · 30/11/2023 09:02

I don't think she or you should've posted the picture of that girl. I would've completely ignored what she said. It's just complete garbage

Appleass · 30/11/2023 09:31

Any one that dresses like that, deliberately showing their buttocks will not mind what anyone is saying about them.

So this elderly lady is batshit because she doesn't like seeing a woman's arse hanging out her shorts. Is your Boss batshit for not allowing you to dress like that at work ?

Plenty of us mind misogyny.

The arse is irrelevant. The part people are objecting to is the twee, misogynistic and coercive little parable where an imaginary ‘wise old man’ lectures the woman in the shorts.

Flip the sexes. Imagine a wise old woman telling a man his body is a precious mineral that should be kept covered up until the right woman arrives to dig it up and refine his hidden gems. And that he will know she is the ‘right woman’ because she will pre-agree the mining process with his government (family) sign a contract (marry him) and legally and ‘tenderly’ mine his precious arse minerals, while he doesn’t get a say. Because he’s just an ore deposit.

And if he lets everyone see his precious body by not covering it up, women will come and ‘illegally mine’ him.

I think the text in the post is just weird, and it’s weird how there are so many analogies related to women and their ‘worth’. However I don’t think it’s nice or pleasant seeing women or men wearing shorts like that in general public places, I also find it off putting when some men wear trousers below their bottoms and have their bottoms hanging out. IMO it’s not about having self respect but just some common decency. Also strange how some people seem to be so supportive of women wearing these kind of shorts (not just shorts in general) but then seem to get so offended by women choosing to wear a head scarf! Completely bizarre!

You must have great difficulty grasping the meaning of the word humour.

There's nothing remotely humourous in intent about that.

I'm amazed someone needs the difference between women wearing shorts ..... And a head scarf (if religious/cultural) explained to them.

The post is a steaming pile of mysoginistc shite, but I do wish it weren't socially acceptable to walk around with your bum cheeks hanging out.
Anyway.. nothing good can come from challenging someone who reposts crap like this. Just mute her.

Someone with good photoshop skills could repost the whole thing with a picture of a man with his trousers and pants half way down his backside, and the text referring to men.

I am sick of standing behind some bloke on the tube escalator who thinks it’s OK to shove his arse crack in people’s faces but men never get this value laden sexist ‘value yourself’ and ‘it’s your own fault if you get assaulted’ stuff.

Uricon2 · 30/11/2023 10:58

It is bad that a young woman has had her image passed round the internet attached to that pile of pompous, misogynistic twaddle, all for wearing a pair of Daisy Dukes.

We're not complaining about her not liking it, or considering it inappropriate. We're complaining about a meme that implies that women are responsible for preserving their precious 'minerals' against men's behaviour. As if men were not responsible for controlling their own behaviour!

HikingforScenery · 30/11/2023 12:09

I really hate peoples bare arses on show but that’s beside the point.

I heard this message many times growing up because that’s what the older ladies in my life thought was the best way to talk to me about dressing modestly.

I agree with SM not being the right place to have this convo but the message is indeed problematic.
