To think this is CF and inappropriate and say no?

KindaProm · 27/11/2023 11:41

Well actually, I've already said no, and I'm getting a lot of attitude from various folk about my response sadly. So I'm here on AIBU to check myself.

A close family member, Zara has a son, Xander 17 who is at a specialist sixth form.

Every Christmas the school has a Very Fancy Christmas Event for Year 13 that all the children make massive efforts for. Think red carpet, photos, lovely food and entertainment.

They like to arrive in style.

I have a nice car. Zara would like to drive Xander in it to the event.

She's not willing to pay for insurance to drive it, and I'm not willing to fund her, so I've refused. She's not a great maneouverer anyway and I'd be concerned that she'd damage it.

She's having a hissy fit because I've RUINED his evening, they've been plotting this arrival since he joined this College. News to me, I was asked at the weekend for the event at the end of term.

Another close family member, Wilma, has called me several times to cajole, persuade and finally berate me for not allowing Zara to have this pleasure. Yes it's all about Zara, not Xander.

Wilma's DH, Vince, has also started trying to persuade me to let Zara drive it just in the grounds of the event, as its private property and insurance is almost irrelevant at that point.

I'm still saying no. Even if I'd consider it, what would I do whole she drove it on the grounds? Stand at the roadside like a plum while she pootles up the driveway?
How's she going to get to the venue?

I've offered to drive him myself but nope, not good enough; Zara needs to be there.

I'm not being unreasonable am I?

And Wilma and Vince need to stick out of it, don't they?

if you lend it on this then there will be more requests in the future.

It's only a bloody sixth-form party fgs. What happens for his 18th, leaving bash, first ball at uni etc etc

stay firm say no

and the other CFs can butt out

HunterBidensLaptop · 27/11/2023 19:06

I used to know a guy called Yoyo, a nickname for Johann.

YorkshirePuddingBelongs · 27/11/2023 19:07

I also think that these kids, whilst 18 are fairly innocent, are the type to grow up and be the next generation of entitled pricks

Lucytheloose · 27/11/2023 19:15

Yvette (formerly Yves but now identifies as female. Zara is taking it quite badly, which is why she has gone off the deep end about Xander's party).

ithinkmyheadiscavingin · 27/11/2023 19:18

She doesn't want to pay insurance? And you're reluctant anyway due to her driving 'ability'?

Then it's a hard no.

She can take you up on your offer to drive him yourself or hire a car elsewhere.

Not your problem.

ScruffMuffin · 27/11/2023 19:20

Taking him yourself should be the perfect solution. Zara could then arrive in advance and take photos/ film the auspicious moment. Too bad that she doesn't think that's enough. No way should you let her or anyone else drive your car without insurance! Saying you've ruined the event is pure emotional blackmail.

Lucytheloose · 27/11/2023 19:22

Sports cars are so last millennium. Xander should be arriving by helicopter. Surely the College has a helipad?

CommonOrNot · 27/11/2023 19:22

Yousef?

oh please tell us what car it is op. YANBU

Dontbehorridhenry · 27/11/2023 19:47

But if you drive it no one will think its Zara's car... her moment will be ruined!

Nope, if she won't pay for insurance she won't pay for damage. Repeat to family members you're happy to drive him so she can take photos, that's the deal take it or leave it.

ohdamnitjanet · 27/11/2023 19:47

God no, what an entitled twat.

Wellawkward · 27/11/2023 19:47

Your car, your choice. You've been more than accommodating by offering the compromise of driving him yourself.

As an aside, can anyone think of a male name beginning with Y? Confused

Tves

Yorick

Yancy

Yakov*

Yehudi

Many Jewish names beginning with "J" can also be spelled with "Y"

Emotionalsupportviper · 27/11/2023 19:56

FrodisCapering · 27/11/2023 11:44

Yves, Yorick, Yael

Should have read on - I've said similar.

Great minds, eh?

KindaProm · 27/11/2023 19:57

Gosh what a lot of responses while I was at work. 😲

Ive no idea about the short insurance costs, her reaction of no way not bothering unnecessary made it not even worthwhile enquiring, and probably getting a thousand emails regarding it 🙄.

Yes she is the golden sister 😂.

Xander is rather lovely, he's a responsible lad who's very grounded, there's no way he'd risk driving it, he's rather fond of it.

The cat is a jaguar.

Put it in for a service* so no one can try anything stupid. She may not want to be your friend after this but that's not a great loss.

  • A mate's garage would do perfectly well. Zara and co are being a tad entitled. The service should include tea and biscuits. Cake for the deluxe service.
Sgtmajormummy · 27/11/2023 19:59

Vince can take both of them in his Plebsmobile, park outside the school gates and wait for OP to arrive sporting her best Angela-Basset-Strange-Days bodyguard outfit/ chauffeur’s cap (delete as appropriate).
OP takes Zara up to the school (interior lights on!) so SHE can have her moment of glory and take pictures, then circles back to pick up shivering Xinderello and do the same thing.
But don’t hang around to bring them home. Vince can do that.
And of course Zara will have some compromising and grovelling to do before you accept.

Yul Brynner! How could I have forgotten him!

<gasp>

I missed him, too!

The cat is a jaguar.

Your cat flap must be massive!

Do you have big mice where you are? Grin

WhereIsBebèsChambre · 27/11/2023 20:07

Is Zara a she-cat tamed by the purr of a jaguar?

Whoaa here she comes....

isitshe · 27/11/2023 20:09

Excellent typo.
Unless you have an actual jaguar & you just threw that in there, apropos of nowt, & your 2 seater motor is a lovely wee Porche or summat.

CloverHilla · 27/11/2023 20:13

The cat is a jaguar

Best typo ever 😆😆🐆

No, yanbu! No insurance makes it even more so.

unsync · 27/11/2023 20:21

Presumably if she's not prepared to cover extra insurance cover, she's not going to cough up if she damages it either? 🙄

snoopyfanaccountant · 27/11/2023 20:32

Shodan · 27/11/2023 16:21

Is the car a soft top?

If not, could you lash her to the roof with bungee cords?

My DF owned a soft-top MGF for a number of years and he once transported a double mattress on its boot-rack.

PrinnyPree · 27/11/2023 20:33

"The cat is a jaguar"

Massive drip feed OP 😅

But yeah yanbu, Zara is batshit as is everyone else trying to guilt trip you into this madness. You've offered to chauffeur for gods sake surely she can just turn up in advance and be waiting at the entrance to snap a few pics of her lad getting out of the car, why does she have to drive?

Unless she's told everyone she's the owner of the Jag.... 😳🤭

lesdeluges · 27/11/2023 20:34

YOTAM

Ottolenghi.

Could cater for the event too.
