Butter or no butter

Not really an AIBU but more a poll. Had one of those random conversations in work about favourite things to spread on toast. Fairly even across the toppings marmite, jam etc. The real difference of opinion was do you use butter/spread when you are having peanut butter on your toast. Roughly half the pb users were insistent you did the others were horrified. So ordinary butter/spread then pb = yabu
Just pb = yanbu

YABU to eat any sort of spread or margarine ever - it messes up all your hormones and metabolism and causes obesity. It should not be classed as fit for human consumption IMO. and no doubt one day soon it wont be.

So anyone who eats margarine ever IBU. And as long as its butter, fine to have it with peanut butter, or not

😂
Overeating calories causes obesity - no matter how pure and unadulterated the food is.

Aquamarine1029 · 26/11/2023 14:58

I love butter, but I don't use it with peanut butter. Not sure why, I've never thought about it before.

Margarine, yes. But all other spreads? Come on.

OP, butter on top of peanut butter? Sounds like a greasy nightmare. Not to mention the calories and claggy texture. Peanut butter is enough for a nicely toasted bit of bread. 😂

DustyLee123 · 26/11/2023 15:00

Why would you put two types of fat on the toast?

to some extent, but hormones play a huge role, and margarine is extremely toxic, and is probably the second biggest cause of obesity in the world, after refined sugar

ditalini · 26/11/2023 15:02

No. I don't have butter when I'm having pate on toast either which dh thinks is weird. Or with cream cheese, or any fat-containing spread.

Good grief this seems a slightly extreme reaction to strangers eating a little bit of spread.

I have a dairy allergy. I rarely eat marg type spread because I find it not particularly nice, but needs must so sometimes I do. You are being very unreasonable and somewhat obsessive.

@sweeneytoddsrazor peanut butter requires no butter or spread to go under it. You sound most reasonable.

OMFG! If you don't have an opinion about peanut butter, just move on.

because people don't realise how harmful it is - it should not be classed as fit for human consumption, and that classification will change in the near future

friendsfiend · 26/11/2023 15:05

I can't vote but I'd always use butter first, even under chocolate spread.

LubaLuca · 26/11/2023 15:05

Peanut butter is the butter, no need for butter as well. I always put jam on with peanut butter, so I'd have to use three separate butter knives and go through three spreading steps if I was using butter as well - that's a nope when I just want to stuff toast in my mouth.

Have you never had a ham and cheese toastie?

OhpoorMe · 26/11/2023 15:06

Of course you put butter on first. Makes the PB all nice and melty

The amount of marg/spread you might eat on a couple of slices of toast would only be "toxic" if it were made of arsenic.

I would love to see your evidence, because you sound a little extreme.

Createausername1970 · 26/11/2023 15:09

I do both on toast, but PB on its own if the bread isn't toasted. PB on its own on toast is a texture that I find odd.

Hermittrismegistus · 26/11/2023 15:10

Butter, always butter. I love butter.

thank you so much for the advice! from now on I will just carry on eating cookies made with butter only. Once I cut out the spread as per your advice... the weight should just come off♡

Itisyourturntowashthebath · 26/11/2023 15:13

I'm sure Clogg will come up with something about partially hydrogenated oils and trans fat.

SmudgeButt · 26/11/2023 15:16

Butter must be used on toast prior to adding the peanut butter.

On a sandwich (untoasted of course as toasted sandwiches are horrid) you can put butter on one slice of bread and peanut butter on the other if that's all you're having.
On a sandwich (still untoasted) where you are having peanut butter with banana or jam you do not need butter but may wish to spread the peanut butter on both slices of bread to keep the jam from leaking through.

These are the laws of peanut butter and must be obeyed.

One alternative of course is to have peanut butter on it's own, using a spoon, straight from the jar. Not something I do but my dad thought it a good way to cut calories as it meant he wasn't eating any bread.

Dubbledup · 26/11/2023 15:16

I think @CleverClogg would cave in a week if they developed a dairy allergy and had to resort to jam on dry toast.

unvillage · 26/11/2023 15:17

Oh, that's why I'm fat! It's the margarine! It all finally makes sense!

😂

Tiedtoatwat · 26/11/2023 15:21

Yuck to peanut butter!!
