Butter or no butter

Not really an AIBU but more a poll. Had one of those random conversations in work about favourite things to spread on toast. Fairly even across the toppings marmite, jam etc. The real difference of opinion was do you use butter/spread when you are having peanut butter on your toast. Roughly half the pb users were insistent you did the others were horrified. So ordinary butter/spread then pb = yabu
Just pb = yanbu

Definitely butter first BUT a thin scraping prior to adding the PB. Compared to eg marmite where you need lashings of butter

Fairly even split so far then. Wasn't expecting a margarine lecture but this is AIBU so it usually throws up a few random posts. On a side note I was the only one who liked lemon curd on my toast. Some of the younger colleagues had never heard of it. When did it go out of favour?

I absolutely love lemon curd. I also strongly reccommend kaya... a Malaysian coconut and pandan (sort of vanillla) curd - amazing

No. I don't have butter when I'm having pate on toast either which dh thinks is weird. Or with cream cheese, or any fat-containing spread.

I hate to break it to him but your DH is the weird one. Almost as weird as @friendsfiend outting hitter with chocolate spread 😮😮

SuspiciousSue · 26/11/2023 20:42

It’s a bit too dry without butter.

BarbaraofSeville · 26/11/2023 20:52

I put a bit on, but less than I'd use if just having buttered toast.

DappledThings · 26/11/2023 20:54

Butter or margarine under any other topping. It's an undercoat. You can paint without it but it won't be as good.

friendsfiend · 26/11/2023 20:58

@StrawBeretMoose I love it. 😄

Didimum · 26/11/2023 20:58

I never used to, but I went to a cafe once that buttered the toast prior to pb, and it was delicious, so I will occasionally now, but rarely. Both are yummy.

AMEN!

fruitpastille · 26/11/2023 21:07

I wouldn't ever eat toast or bread without putting some butter on first, regardless of the topping. I do sometimes eat a rich tea biscuit with just PB on though.

Cumberbiatch · 26/11/2023 21:07

Butter, pb, and then a sprinkling of salted peanuts. If you're in the mood, a very light dusting of sugar.

(Sorry, I'm on a diet and am fantasising/remembering.)

ganglion · 26/11/2023 21:08

I don't but I have tried it and I completely get why people would do this.

Sahmto3 · 26/11/2023 21:08

On toast just peanut butter.
In a sandwich then butter first, peanut butter and then cut into squares 😂😂

jay55 · 26/11/2023 21:15

No butter with peanut butter, or with marmite.

Pinkpinkpink15 · 26/11/2023 21:17

Always butter (proper butter!!) first. Too dry with just PB.

thankyouforthedayz · 26/11/2023 21:21

No butter under peanut butter on toast, but most definitely in a peanut butter sandwich.

Tintackedsea · 26/11/2023 21:21

All toast wants butter. Whatever happens after that is your choice but the toast demands butter.

You've done it now OP!! I'm craving lemon curd! 🤣

Why would you put two types of fat on the toast?

For the same reason as we use one type of fat on toast - great taste 👍

Helenahandkart · 26/11/2023 21:57

With butter and without butter. They’re two entirely different toast/peanut butter experiences, and I like them both equally.

KohlaParasaurus · 26/11/2023 22:07

Depends on the quality of the peanut butter. The expensive stuff that just contains peanuts and a bit of salt needs butter to stop it from tearing the toast, but the cheap stuff that's full of added oil, sugar and emulsifiers spreads just fine and needs cheese on top.

I love lemon curd, and every other fruit curd, but not with peanut butter.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 26/11/2023 22:09

Peanut butter requires some actual butter to act as a lubricant. Else it sticks to the top of your mouth and threatens to suffocate you.

The more the merrier, I say 🙌

This was my experience too.
Not under chocolate spread, pâté or cream cheese though.
Jam and marmalade also need butter. Though I’m not really a marmalade fan.

YABU to eat any sort of spread or margarine ever - it messes up all your hormones and metabolism and causes obesity. It should not be classed as fit for human consumption IMO. and no doubt one day soon it wont be.

So anyone who eats margarine ever IBU. And as long as its butter, fine to have it with peanut butter, or not

Pseudo-science alert.
