Butter or no butter

sweeneytoddsrazor · 26/11/2023 14:52

Not really an AIBU but more a poll. Had one of those random conversations in work about favourite things to spread on toast. Fairly even across the toppings marmite, jam etc. The real difference of opinion was do you use butter/spread when you are having peanut butter on your toast. Roughly half the pb users were insistent you did the others were horrified. So ordinary butter/spread then pb = yabu
Just pb = yanbu

I do eat peanut butter but with jam or marmalade I’d eat butter too. Was once at a hotel for a wedding and a woman actually walked over to me and said it was great to see someone eating butter with marmalade, that everyone called her strange😅

R4R1 · 26/11/2023 15:23

Have you lost your minds.

Butter under peanut butter is like heaven in your mouth. Also offsets the coarseness/thickness of PB with bits.

OneTC · 26/11/2023 15:27

It's just a missed opportunity to eat butter if you go without

Fromage · 26/11/2023 15:27

I'm sure Clogg will come up with something about partially hydrogenated oils and trans fat.

Trans fats are fats?

I have spread or butter with peanut butter because otherwise it's too sticky in my mouth, unless it's - brace yourself for the utter horror of this, Clogg - a pbj, in which case the pb is nicely unsticky-ed by the j. Oh, and it's always highly processed, mass produced jam with extra sugar and e-numbers etc.

megletthesecond · 26/11/2023 15:29

Always butter or marg first then spread of choice.

stayathomer · 26/11/2023 15:29

Oh, that's why I'm fat! It's the margarine! It all finally makes sense!

😂
😅

My granny and grandad lived to their nineties eating crusty bread at lunchtime with butter and toast in the morning and evening. Both were slim. I don’t think margarine and butter alone will cause obesity and the people freaking out, go have a nice sandwich with some butter and live dangerously come to the dark side😅

HardcoreLadyType · 26/11/2023 15:30

The answer to butter or no butter would always be “butter”.

Fromage · 26/11/2023 15:33

I think we need a gameshow made out of that, HardcoreLadyType.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 26/11/2023 15:33

Always butter, underneath anything. Beans on toast - toast has to be buttered. Peanut butter, chocolate spread, Philly - always has butter underneath. I think it changes the texture, but I might just be deluded and butter-obsessed.

But I do like butter.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 26/11/2023 15:35

I would on toast, the butter melts into the toast, then the peanut butter sits on top. It has to be crunchy peanut butter though.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 26/11/2023 15:43

Peanut butter is the butter

Peanut butter isn't butter though. In the same way that chocolate chips aren't chips, black pudding isn't pudding and chocolate (or fish) fingers aren't fingers Grin

OrangePeelLemonPeel · 26/11/2023 15:48

I don’t use butter with peanut butter. I find it goes funny when I deep fry the sandwich.

CleverClogg · 26/11/2023 15:01

to some extent, but hormones play a huge role, and margarine is extremely toxic, and is probably the second biggest cause of obesity in the world, after refined sugar

I didn't know that thanks. I do think there is more to losing weight than calories out exceeding calories in. I think other factors are at play as I know people who eat practically nothing yet still do not lose weight (and have no other conditions). There must be more to it for some people than simply COCI).

I agree it improves the flavour of any topping. But I avoid doing so simply due to the extra calories.

maddiemookins16mum · 26/11/2023 16:08

any slice of bread consumed in whatever form in this house has butter spread on it.

Caerulea · 26/11/2023 16:11

The answer is butter. It's always butter. Regardless the question.

SpringingJoy · 26/11/2023 16:14

I would never ruin a good piece of toast by putting peanut butter on it.

But I WOULD put butter on my toast before jam.

Nowherenew · 26/11/2023 16:15

Peanut butter and butter do not go together! 🤢

Neither does butter and Nutella.

Jam and butter go together lovely though.

JanglingJack · 26/11/2023 16:15

PB only, more importantly crunchy PB.

Anything else is wrong 🤣

CleverClogg · 26/11/2023 14:55

YABU to eat any sort of spread or margarine ever - it messes up all your hormones and metabolism and causes obesity. It should not be classed as fit for human consumption IMO. and no doubt one day soon it wont be.

So anyone who eats margarine ever IBU. And as long as its butter, fine to have it with peanut butter, or not

Not to mention the microchip in it to track your movements and control you.😂

Doggymummar · 26/11/2023 16:31

Pbn needs lubricant so yes to butter, and jam usually

sweeneytoddsrazor · 26/11/2023 16:33

Fairly even split so far then. Wasn't expecting a margarine lecture but this is AIBU so it usually throws up a few random posts. On a side note I was the only one who liked lemon curd on my toast. Some of the younger colleagues had never heard of it. When did it go out of favour?

Butter is like a primer for peanut butter

What brand of marg are you referring too? Most butter-like spreads are just made of vegetable oils and emulsifiers
