Butter or no butter

sweeneytoddsrazor · 26/11/2023 14:52

Not really an AIBU but more a poll. Had one of those random conversations in work about favourite things to spread on toast. Fairly even across the toppings marmite, jam etc. The real difference of opinion was do you use butter/spread when you are having peanut butter on your toast. Roughly half the pb users were insistent you did the others were horrified. So ordinary butter/spread then pb = yabu
Just pb = yanbu

If I don't put a thin layer of butter on, I end up using twice as much peanut butter because it doesn't spread well - and I like peanut butter, but means there is too much of it.

I do eat peanut butter but with jam or marmalade I’d eat butter too. Was once at a hotel for a wedding and a woman actually walked over to me and said it was great to see someone eating butter with marmalade, that everyone called her strange😅

This is really odd. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t use butter with jam or marmalade (tell a lie, allegedly my grandad, but he died when I was 3 so it’s just hearsay). They even give you a Pat of butter with the little jam/marmalade pot in cafés. What a strange woman that was…

sleepD3pr1ived · 26/11/2023 22:21

Definitely butter than peanut butter 💕 NOT 'spread' of any kind ever with or without PB

And you also have to have jam - so butter then peanut butter then jam. BPB&J - food of the gods.

Peanut butter requires some actual butter to act as a lubricant. Else it sticks to the top of your mouth and threatens to suffocate you.

This!

PickAChew · 26/11/2023 22:28

I love butter. Butter hates me so pb does go on neat. Shame, as a little butter means I can spread the pb more generously without it glueing my mouth shut.

evtheria · 26/11/2023 22:29

NO butter with PB 🙅‍♀️🙅‍♀️🙅‍♀️

This was my experience too.
Not under chocolate spread, pâté or cream cheese though.
Jam and marmalade also need butter. Though I’m not really a marmalade fan.

Edited

Ooh, I dunno … yes under cream cheese for definite for me. And jam. Not choc spread. Am a vegetarian so not tried pâté – that’s got a butter base anyway hasn’t it?

Elvis1956 · 26/11/2023 22:40

Butter life it too short. Like mouse trap cheese on every thing...I've done without to lose wait and just had a smear of jam...But it was like swimming with your socks on. You can but why the fuck would you

hobbledyhoy · 26/11/2023 22:40

This is very much dependent on the main topping
Peanut butter - yes
Jam - yes
Marmalade - yes
Basically any fruit based condiment - add butter
Chocolate spread - no
Philadelphia - absolutely fucking not

I can't bear margarine so it has to be butter.

Ittastesvile · 26/11/2023 22:45

Toast only has one thing on it, unless it's cheese-on-toast or a toasted sandwich.

So toast with EITHER butter, jam, chocolate spread, peanut butter, pate.

My husband mostly agrees with me but he does use butter with jam, which I think is rank.

ScremeEggs · 26/11/2023 22:54

I bloody love peanut butter on toast, one of my favourite things ever!
You need a bit of butter on it in my opinion, not too much mind.
If there's no butter it's far too "claggy!"
So I've voted YABU

Aroundthewaygirl · 26/11/2023 22:55

Adding butter seems too much especially the extra calories.

OnlyTheCrumbliestFlakiestChocolate · 26/11/2023 22:59

I love butter as a spread but not with peanut butter. Peanut butter is rich and creamy and yummy without it. I was going to say I wouldn't put another butter with it then I remembered I do sometimes put Nutella with PB, and I guess Nutella is a kind of nut butter but with cocoa added.

Raspberry jam with just peanut butter on bread is the height of delish.

EnthENd · 26/11/2023 23:00

Peanut butter isn't butter. Toast needs butter (or marg, but butter is nicer) and optionally a topping on top.

The Dutch call it pindakaas, literally translating to peanut cheese. Would you omit the butter if you were having cheese on toast?

theduchessofspork · 26/11/2023 23:02

Oooh it’s nearly 50/50

My sister is one of the weirdos that puts butter under peanut butter. I love butter but NO! not under the crunchy stuff. (She also puts butter and cream on a scone mind you, so she is hardcore.)

No you come to mention is yes, I don’t put butter under cheese either, but I don’t think the two things fought in the same way, just don’t think it needs it.

FreshWinterMorning · 26/11/2023 23:04

Putting butter on and peanut butter on top is batshit. HTH.

ODFOx · 26/11/2023 23:04

With PB: no. Absolutely not.
With marmite; depends on if you are dieting or not: marmite snd s poached egg on toast without butter is a perfectly lively meal; marmite and butter on hot toast is a deliciousness best eaten when slightly tipsy or slightly sad as it's so good you need a low point to elevate up from.

Now you are completely wrong in the other direction, you absolutely need butter with honey and jam, or where is the lovely fat n salt n sugar experience??? Hmm???

theduchessofspork · 26/11/2023 23:07

KohlaParasaurus · 26/11/2023 22:07

Depends on the quality of the peanut butter. The expensive stuff that just contains peanuts and a bit of salt needs butter to stop it from tearing the toast, but the cheap stuff that's full of added oil, sugar and emulsifiers spreads just fine and needs cheese on top.

I love lemon curd, and every other fruit curd, but not with peanut butter.

What you need to try is pip and nut, much easier spreading than whole earth, but equally wholesome

Lol. I really hate the way jam or honey mix in with the butter. So messy, and means I can't enjoy either the butter or the spread. I also put toppings on toast very thickly, maybe that's a factor.

See, cheese or ham do not mix with the butter so that is acceptable to have both!

stayathomer · 27/11/2023 04:55

I actually don’t know many people who do put butter with either so I was laughing with her saying same here!! My family all say it’s disgusting when I put butter under jam!!!!

flowerchild2000 · 27/11/2023 05:00

This is the first I've heard of this! I am a little horrified! 😂 Butter always but never with pb...just why??

The best way to eat pb on toast is to let some honey soak into the toast first, then pb. The honey will crystallize if the bread is the right temperature. It has the most amazing texture and taste!

Elastica23 · 27/11/2023 05:03

The only topping I don't have butter under is avocado.

I find peanut butter too dry and claggy on its own, and far too sweet with honey.

You're not at Weight Watchers in the 1980s now, Pamela.
