I turned around and walked out again, don’t get me started on dogs sniffing cups and plates of food whilst sat next to the owners.
What is the solution ?
Can’t dogs be left anymore?
AIBU to think dog separation cannot be so painful that dogs have to go everywhere!

3 local cafes near me have signs up ‘dogs welcome, just not indoors’. All 3 have covered outdoor seating. Does not stop entitled arseholes bringing their dogs inside and castigating the staff who ask them to sit outside.

Teatrayderby · 25/11/2023 19:14

I love dogs, but they don't belong in cafes unless on the outside tables or they are a service dog.

misssunshine4040 · 25/11/2023 19:16

I love dogs but it's grim as fuck when a cafe or restaurant is full of dogs.
Nothing to do with dog hating, there's a time and place.
So many people are allergic too.

redfacebigdisgrace · 25/11/2023 19:16

Love dogs but just not too many in a cafe at once and not on the seats please- gross. Oh and if they start barking or whining take them outside.

Daveismyhero · 25/11/2023 19:16

Dogs are everywhere now, inthink part of the issue is that people are shamed on places like mumsnet and Facebook for leaving their dog home alone and told that if they are going to go out they shouldn't have a dog, so that encourages them to bring the dog places that allow them in. There is certainly a shift, my previous dog never really came anywhere with us, we walked him and played with him and that was that. Current dog comes a lot more places not because he can't be left but just because more places accept dogs now. I have been shamed for going to work and leaving him hone alone even though I know he doesn't mind, so that's probably got a lot to do with the shift in culture

alrighthen · 25/11/2023 19:18

Think I’d disagree that most people are ambivalent about dogs. I know quite a lot of people who dislike dogs in cafes.

Dogs are great but can be smelly and unhygienic in cafes. I‘d have left too

Syndulla · 25/11/2023 19:18

FlissyPaps · 25/11/2023 18:51

If you don’t like dogs or dogs being inside cafes then just leave and go somewhere else. It’s not really an issue.

Not possible where I am. It is literally only Wetherspoons that don't allow dogs. And it's grim in there.

I saw dogs at my local leisure centre the other day. Someone had brought them along to their kids' swimming lessons and had tied them up in the reception area. Bloody ridiculous.

Cafes that have a no dog policy. (Apart from guide dogs/service dogs). Do your own research in your local area.

I don’t think I’ve ever visited a public place where there is no escape from dogs. Sounds scary though.

Keswick. Come to Keswick. There really isn't any escape!

Allthingsdecember · 25/11/2023 19:20

Coffee shops are businesses. If they attract more customers by letting in dogs than banning them, they’ll continue to do so. It’s not personal.

The only thing you can do is take your business elsewhere 🤷‍♀️.

LakieLady · 25/11/2023 19:20

Do Costa allow them in? Whenever I walk past my local Costa, there are often people at the outside tables with dogs, even on very cold days, which made me wonder if they're not allowed inside.

We have at least three independent coffee places in town that don't allow dogs in, although one of them is in an indoor market type place where there is a butcher and a fishmonger, so not allowed under food regs. And dogs aren't allowed in the Costa that's inside Tesco, obvs.

WillowCraft · 25/11/2023 18:51

No dogs in places where food is sold should be the rule. Unless sitting outside

I agree! It's unhygienic... although some humans are also rather unhygienic too 🤢 Animals don't belong in coffee shops unless they're a necessity like a guide dog etc.

Bagpuss2022 · 25/11/2023 19:22

I’m a dog lover but it’s got stupid now they are everywhere. If they allow dogs it should be capped depending on space

NotTheMrMenAgain · 25/11/2023 19:22

What breed?

Lilacdressinggown · 25/11/2023 19:24

I would not go into that cafe. Really unhygienic.

Elfandwellbeing · 25/11/2023 19:26

I do not hate dogs but I do hate eating with dogs. I am amazed at the sheer number of people who can’t leave their dog at home, it is like a separation anxiety !
A dog is a commitment and will mean and a life style change but not all people accept this. Instead they impose their dogs on others.

We don’t take dogs to a cafe as a treat. It’s Saturday, people are out on walks, they should be able to get a coffee the same as everyone else. I would understand if the dog was sniffing your cup but it wasn’t. It was sniffing owner’s cup and the cafe washes them between customers, I’m sure.

Bolloxforsure · 25/11/2023 19:28

Too much for who? I’d be fine with it. The dog owners were fine with it. Management were fine with it.

Another miserable dog hater. This has been done to death on MN

@Standproperly

people can post about what they want.
if so many people are posting about the same thing, it clearly must be an issue.
Soz.

What about cat cafes?

TerrysNeapolitan · 25/11/2023 19:30

I love dogs but sometimes in small spaces with people eating it just isn't practical, I was sat in a pub last year with a large glass of red wine, dinner arrived, just as I was starting to eat an enormous dog glides past wagging its tail which sent the red wine flying, the broken glass and wine goes all over me, the dinner, everywhere, dog then looks round barges into the table to look at the dinner treading in the glass - the landlord runs over - it is his dog 🤦🏻‍♀️ I was totally ok about it, I've had animals - it is one of those things - others may not be so chilled about it.

AirFryerFrequentFlyer · 25/11/2023 19:30

Dog bashing threads are rapidly over taking teacher bashing and benefit bashing on MN.

We just need a thread where a MIL on benefits has parked badly, popped in uninvited and brought her dog for MN Bingo full house. Grin

Luzina · 25/11/2023 19:30

I am ambivalent about dogs. If I had the choice I’d rather not be sitting near dogs in a cafe but I don’t really mind if they are in there. Maybe Starbucks should have a dog area or something

Janicepalace · 25/11/2023 19:30

I just can’t imagine being that miserable that seeing a dog in a cafe would upset me so much. I love dogs and would happily take my dog to Starbucks. If it keeps the miserable out, even better.

LindorDoubleChoc · 25/11/2023 19:32

I'm honestly mystified at why dog lovers don't understand that other people don't want dogs under their feet everywhere? Especially in shops and restaurants. Is it really so hard to grasp?

I went into a total of two shops on my High Street yesterday - Superdrug and an independent gift shop. There were dogs in both of them! But why?

What if you take your dog into a shop and they take a dislike to another dog in there and they bark at each other. Is that OK for everyone else?

What if the dog knocks something off a shelf with a wagging tail, is that ok?

Dogs don't wipe their feet on a door mat if it's muddy and raining outside.

We are a country of dog lovers but it's only been in the past few years that people expect them to be accommodated everywhere. It's so strange.
