I turned around and walked out again, don’t get me started on dogs sniffing cups and plates of food whilst sat next to the owners.
What is the solution ?
Can’t dogs be left anymore?
AIBU to think dog separation cannot be so painful that dogs have to go everywhere!

I'm allergic to dogs. On Saturday in a cafe enjoying a nice breakfast when someone comes in with their dog that they can't control jumping and walking all over the place and owner completely oblivious!

Had to finish quickly and rush out before my allergies started - don't think that makes me an arsehole @BitOutOfPractice

XenoBitch · 27/11/2023 17:15

I take my dog to cafes and neither my coffee or cake end up with dog hairs on it.

And this is a shocker, other humans with their manky teeth put their mouth and tongue on the cutlery and cups in Costa too. It all gets washed!

HAHAA! chose the perfect name for yourself. You felt the need to respond to me, why?

My comment stands dear. YUK! and NO THANK YOU!!

This is what I don’t understand. Why on earth would you choose to go into a cafe that doesn’t exclude dogs if you are allergic to them?

It just doesn’t make any sense to me.

TBF it’s not always clear whether somewhere is dog friendly or not. I’d assumed before the last couple of years that if somewhere didn’t explicitly say it was dog friendly then dogs weren’t allowed.

Eh? @Fofftwenty21 you are allergic to dogs but chose to visit a cafe that welcomes dogs for your breakfast? Did you not foresee how that might end?

You have to assume everywhere is dog friendly now unless explicitly stated otherwise, whether you like it or not.

To do otherwise would be sheer stupidity.

Fofftwenty21 · 27/11/2023 17:54

Thanks @IGotItFromAgnes and no @Duvetdayforme it wasn't clear. Absolutely ridiculous that so many places let dogs in now and yes good advice I won't be going back there and will check next time.

Ellejay67 · 27/11/2023 18:00

What does understanding whether an animal is happy or not, have to do with the ability to control it?
I've read nearly every comment on this thread and whilst I don't agree with the anti dog brigade, most of their arguments make sense.
Not one of your silly comments does.

Mumof2boys999 · 27/11/2023 18:04

It's very difficult sometimes to "just leave the dog at home". When we're away on a caravan site, we're not allowed to leave the dog behind. So if we want to visit a city or town we have to find somewhere that is happy for us to take the dog. Quite often we end up sitting outside under umbrellas but it is really nice when we can tale the dog in and she can sit under the table while we eat. Our money can only be spent in places we are welcomed!

chattyness · 27/11/2023 18:06

Elfandwellbeing · 27/11/2023 13:10

@chattyness I accept from your reply the separation anxiety is real. I do, but surely change comes with owning a pet? For example, I absolutely loved going out at night, dancing the evening away… along while ago mind now mind you .. however once I had dc I knew my life would change, why is it that dog owners, more recently, get so angry at the idea of other people rejecting their dog.

I have no idea ! I suspect that everyone will answer that differently. We don't force our dog on anyone, not even other dog owners, just as much as I don't wish anyone to force their annoying/darling children/little monsters on me. I don't expect or want anyone to gush & ooh and aah over him either. I'd rather not go where there would be chance he wasn't welcome or where he could get stood on or kicked etc he's very precious to us.
For us our life did change when we became dog owners many years ago, before that we used to go out for meals and drinks etc and now it's takeaways and picnics instead, it's better this way, we prefer the company of our dog and we get peace and quiet.

Better seven dogs than seven shrieking children.
There, I said it.

Do you want a round of applause? Funnily enough, many unoriginal antisocial dog-lovers like you have already repeated the pathetic defence that kidz r worse than dogz!

Probably true.

greenbeansnspinach · 27/11/2023 18:29

I’m retired, and I’m trying to think what people used to do say, forty years ago, with their dogs. Surely all those dogs weren’t traumatised by being left at home - or were they?
As society has clearly now moved on, and I love my two cats a lot, and being a breed that really suffers when their owner leaves the house, I’m thinking I’ll start taking them with me wherever I go. It’s much harder to train cats than dogs, especially where jumping up and eating food that’s not theirs is concerned, but still, I’m sure with the new inclusive attitudes we’ve got now there won’t be a problem!

Sparkleshine21 · 27/11/2023 18:30

So when I take my dog for an hour long walk, then fancy a brew, im supposed to walk all the way back for another hour to drop her off and then go out again when there are plenty of dog friendly cafes around? Or should dog owners just stay at home with their dogs? My dog can be left for a good amount of hours with no trouble but on a weekend, it’s nice to have the family all together and yea sometimes people with dogs would like to leave the house because, newsflash, dogs need lots of exercise!

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 27/11/2023 18:31

I posted earlier on this thread that a dog pee'd up the Christmas tree in my local coffee shop last week which I thought was grim.

I've just got back from a food shop and managed to tread in dog mess several feet into the supermarket. Firstly I was annoyed I didn't spot it, too busy trying to get a signal on the parking app, but I also felt sorry for the staff who had to clear it up. I do like dogs, have grown up with them but why are they everywhere. I posted recently that I was trying to buy a fireplace and someone had their lively husky pup with them. The owner spent all their time trying to stop the dog leaping over us, and others. I don't understand this pandering to dogs, anxiety separation for some due to lockdown perhaps but this was a pup.

I'm honestly mystified at why dog lovers don't understand that other people don't want dogs under their feet everywhere? Especially in shops and restaurants. Is it really so hard to grasp?

I went into a total of two shops on my High Street yesterday - Superdrug and an independent gift shop. There were dogs in both of them! But why?

What if you take your dog into a shop and they take a dislike to another dog in there and they bark at each other. Is that OK for everyone else?

What if the dog knocks something off a shelf with a wagging tail, is that ok?

Dogs don't wipe their feet on a door mat if it's muddy and raining outside.

We are a country of dog lovers but it's only been in the past few years that people expect them to be accommodated everywhere. It's so strange.

I went to a Pets at Home and it was full of people who had brought their dogs. They were all growling at each other and I felt it was totally unfair on the small animals who are scared of dogs.

There is a poster here who let her dog sit on train tables because he likes the view. 🙄🙄🙄She claims to wipe down the table but even so, 🤮

That’s interesting as their dog policy explicitly says dogs aren’t allowed on seats. Their Twitter team aren’t helping anyone by posting that.

Keep them out, let the doggies in.

I absolutely love dogs and seeing them going all over with their owners makes my day but 7 dogs in an enclosed space like a cafe is too many. 7 is a lot of dogs.

I sort of understand it at Pets at home as it is at least a pet shop and ours has a vet in the same unit.
Although I did once see a woman turn up 5 min before closing with a young puppy under her arm and was asking an assistant what she might need for it - she had just picked it up and had no food/bed/anything for it. If she was that clueless about food and basics, I'm imagining she would probably not be fussed about training!

Didiplanthis · 27/11/2023 19:56

I like dogs... I have 2. I still don't see why everywhere is suddenly 'dog friendly'... plenty of people don't like dogs and I strongly feel their right to not be surrounded by dogs outweighs my rights to take my dog everywhere... I chose to have a dog and with that accept this brings limitations on MY choices and activities. I dont expect other people to have their activities limited by my dog ownership.. but I seem to be in a minority 🤷‍♀️..
