I turned around and walked out again, don’t get me started on dogs sniffing cups and plates of food whilst sat next to the owners.
What is the solution ?
Can’t dogs be left anymore?
AIBU to think dog separation cannot be so painful that dogs have to go everywhere!

Providing those dogs werent interfering with you then yes, you are totally being unreasonable, your comment is devoid of any knowledge of dogs. My dog loves going out where he gets to experience different places and spend nice time with his family. Dogs are sociable creatures, their owners are literally the centre of their world. Why should they be left at home because of miserable dog haters?

How many times does this have to be said - not liking dogs or not wanting to be around other people's dogs or even liking them but not wanting them in eateries does not make one a 'dog hater'.

DangerousAlchemy · 27/11/2023 16:28

I read a great Guardian article the other day about this very issue. I'll try & post the link if I can. Definitely worth a read as it was about separation anxiety plus dog behaviour & the things a lot of owners are perhaps handling in the wrong way. I was in a cafe on Sunday where a huge group of dogs came in with a handful of owners. They took over half the cafe & there was a lot of barking & whining. We left soon after. I really like dogs & have walked my friend's large dog for 10 years but I don't necessarily want them barking in my local cafe when I'm trying to have a catch-up with my friend.

Some places have a menu for dogs, or at the very least have a puppuccino type drink for dogs. Dog friendly places usually have a jar of dog treats on counter. Some even take photos of visiting dogs and put it on their social media.
If a particular establishment allows and encourages dogs, then dog owners are doing nothing wrong by being in them.
Plus, some dogs do enjoy visiting them.

How do you know they enjoy it? Do the dogs write a review detailing what they liked best about the floor under the table or the kind of dog snacks on offer!

As a person that is petrified of dogs I avoid places that allow dogs inside. People also have allergies, and I’m not convinced it’s hygienic. I’m rather fed up of pubs and places allowing them in as I don’t want to sit next to someone’s dog. Dog lovers seem to have the expectation that you will like their dog, want to fuss them, want them to jump up you in the park etc. it’s about time it changed. I don’t expect people to like my cats, don’t expect me to like your dog.

We don't all have this 'expectation' at all.

Most dog owners just want to be left alone & I actively avoid people seeking to engage with mine, due to past experiences of idiot men trying to rough house with my large breed dogs & a child who slapped my puppy across the face.

I don't have any expectations beyond people leaving us in peace on the odd occasion we're in a dog friendly establishment, which would only be with my very small dog, because she's the only one who would be OK in that environment.

If you know your dog, you know what they like and don't like.
Im pretty sure toddlers don't post on trip advisor but would assume that their owners can tell what they do and dont enjoy.

I agree Op. I’ve been trying to book a cottage for next summer this weekend, all 3 of the ones I really like are ‘dog friendly and welcome up to 3 dogs’. No thanks, I don’t want to pay £1500 to stay somewhere dogs have been sleeping on all the furniture for the previous 2 weeks (and longer).

I can't see how you have an issue. When I search for 'dog friendly' accomodation I have very limited choices. Initially a search will return hundreds of appropriate places, then when you add 'dog friendly' it drops by 60/80%. So you do have considerably more choices than a dog owner.

Mumof3PrettyBoys · 27/11/2023 16:37

Dogs in coffee shops? - NO thank you! They do often make very amazing companions, but some are whiney and howl like wolves until owner gets back! I'm a dog lover but would prefer my coffee and pastry without dog hairs in it. I once saw a woman put her Costa owned plate under the table so her dog could lick the plate!! That was the last time i ate out at Costa!!

BitOutOfPractice · 27/11/2023 16:40

And this Thread is peak mn. Anyone who doesn’t want a dog in a restaurant is a joyless arehole who hates all animals. 🙄 I don’t hate dogs. I even actively like some that I know. I am just fed up of them being everywhere, all the time.

Not wanting dogs everywhere does not equal hating dogs. Bore off with that line will you. Your dog, an animal, is not more important than a human. And no, I don't hate dogs, quite the opposite.

thetworonnies · 27/11/2023 16:51

I mean, people who hate dogs in cafes, coffee shops, bars, pubs, shops, restaurants and holiday homes is a bit of a mouthful.

I usually find the opposite if I'm looking for pet free....we must be looking on different sites!

Better seven dogs than seven shrieking children.
There, I said it.

A slight aside but I the only person who finds the word 'puppaccino' ridiculous?
Pup cup isn't much better.

This isn't a reflection on whether I think dogs should get treats, we had one who loved a cup of tea and/or cornflakes with milk at breakfast time, just the silliness of the word!

It’s no more ridiculous than babyccino.

Are you in the UK? Where is this town/city/village where you only either have a child or a dog? When my DH and I tried to visit a pub on a Sunday, out of the 4 local ones (that didn't used to have dogs in them) none of them had any space due to the family trips of kids and dogs all sitting down for a roast dinner and that included a few dogs on the chairs around the table with them. Note to self, will have to visit bars in the city centre only or restaurants with no dogs allowed so that I don't die from an asthma attack. Even our arthouse cinema has dog and owner viewings - what dog wants to watch a film!

It is the same with babyccino. I guess it makes it pretty obvious what it is.
I think the Starbucks one is just cream. There is a cafe where I live where it has a load of dog biscuits hidden in it.

I know my dog pretty well, and I know when she is not happy with something, or if she is enjoying something. Most owners would be able to say the same about their dog.

I take my dog to cafes and neither my coffee or cake end up with dog hairs on it.

And this is a shocker, other humans with their manky teeth put their mouth and tongue on the cutlery and cups in Costa too. It all gets washed!

Interesting that so many dog owners can communicate with and understand their dog so well and yet when they run after a squirrel, or won't stop barking, or are jumping up at someone or run after a jogger or child on a scooter, the dog cannot seem to understand anything the owner is trying to communicate to them .

Words · 27/11/2023 17:16

Oh dogs on chairs is completely atrocious I agree. Just like a toddler shrieking and stamping on the furniture.

The issue is there was an explosion of dog ownership in lockdown and lots of novice dog owners around now with no clue.

And now the businesses have sprung up to cater for it. I used to enjoy the growing variety of places I could take her to these days, but only because I knew her obedience was rock solid.

Past tense as she died on 24 October very unexpectedly and am bereft.

I just wish the owners of human puppies would be a bit more discerning.

chumblywumbly · 27/11/2023 17:20

As someone who works in a pub that allows dogs I'm sick of tripping over them!

Owners just sit there and the dog is blocking the hatch, coming behind the bar, lying in front of the bar...

I have a dog but seriously, owners are the problem.

Oh I don’t know, how about Lassie? Or Clifford the Big Red Dog, that was a good one.

My Labrador would probably enjoy Watership Down 😍

My service dog does none of those things because we communicate very well, thanks. I wish the same were true of children... and some adults. No don't touch the dog, he's working. No don't set off fireworks along the ground in the park / street to see how dogs/people act. Etc. Etc.

I am as annoyed as anyone else by irresponsible dog owners. But it isn't all one way travel. Two weeks ago I stopped a small child who thought it was funny to see what happened when he HIT my dog with a stick, whilst his grandfather (i assume) looked on whilst i told him TWICE not to do it. Any other dog, even well trained, could have attacked. In our case my dog has a "little one" command that says to remain calm not matter what a child does. Regrettably, I have no such command. The third time he raised the stick I took it off him and hit HIM with it. And I won't apologise, because he has not only learned a lesson, but I may have saved his life. There's a dozen dogs in the same park that would have attacked back.
