I turned around and walked out again, don’t get me started on dogs sniffing cups and plates of food whilst sat next to the owners.
What is the solution ?
Can’t dogs be left anymore?
AIBU to think dog separation cannot be so painful that dogs have to go everywhere!

Would you not consider children like mine with chronic asthma and awful allergies. Do you really all need to collect as a group with dogs in a coffee shop? It would really set my kids off and although if we saw this we would just leave I thought you should be aware its not just we hate dogs, some people really suffer around them.

AllAroundMyCat · 25/11/2023 20:09

It
Pisses me right off if I'm having a cup of tea and cake.

I love dogs and I have one of my own.
I hate being in a coffee shop with one. It's skanky. The dogs are invariably allowed to wander and also bark at the slightest thing.
They are usually cockyshitpoos so the owners are usually oblivious to these mutts' behaviours.

Never see a golden retriever or a German shepherd at coffee shops.

I wish dogs were allowed in supermarkets too

I was in B&Q the other day.A dog with a really piercing yap scared the crap out of me in the queue behind me.First I've seen in a D.I.Y store.

Another miserable dog hater. This has been done to death on MN

Sorry that we don't all want smelly, noisy animals jumping on us and leaving germs on our food. Leave your dog at home. Not hard.

mumda · 25/11/2023 20:10

People who are badly allergic to dogs are not going to enjoy having a coffee in a place with 7 dogs.

MrsMarzetti · 25/11/2023 20:10

I want to go to a cafe for a catch up with friends and enjoy it in peace. My dog manages to stay at home whilst i go out, in fact he has never been in a cafe or a pub. If your dog can't be left at home for a couple of hours you have done something wrong.

Go somewhere else if you don’t like it. Not hard.
It is the cafe owners decision whether to welcome dogs.

But why can't you just leave it at home? Why is it so hard for you to accept that they're a nuisance?

letsgojo · 25/11/2023 20:13

I'm allergic to dogs and would have to walk straight back out 😞

Lilacdressinggown · 25/11/2023 20:14

The posts I see on here from the dog owners just confirm my negative option of them - they seem to only be concerned about themselves and don’t care at all about others.
In fact they give the impression that if they can cause discomfort to others that is so much the better.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 25/11/2023 20:14

Well I can’t see there being a change any time soon, people like taking their dogs out with them. About a third of households have one or more dogs now I think I heard on our local news.

Better get used to it., they’re here to stay.

It isn’t that my dog can’t be left at home but that isn’t compulsory. A lot of people enjoy having their dogs out with them in dog friendly pubs and cafes

I was actually in the one place I know locally that has a dog-free seating area last weekend. Still someone decided to bring their dog in there - apparently dog didn’t like the flooring in the dog-friendly bit. Staff asked them to move and they refused. That one’s definitely an entitled owner issue (and, yes, the dog was a something-poo cross)

Dog owners can go to dog friendly places and others can go elsewhere. What is the problem with that?

If you rarely go out for coffee then you are not going to keep cafes in business. Good job there are lots of regular customers who bring their dogs to do that 🐶🐕🦮🐩🐕‍🦺🐾🦴

I support small local businesses whenever I can, whether home or away; I only go out for coffee when I'm away from home.

VickyEadieofThigh · 25/11/2023 19:33

YABU to walk out WITHOUT telling staff WHY.

If you want change, you need to give feedback.

I have a dog but never take her into cafes.

A few years ago, I went out with a group of friends, 12 of us, to a local posh(ish) pub. I'd checked beforehand as one of the group is allergic, they confirmed dog free (other than service dogs).

We'd had our starters and another group arrived with two dogs (not service dogs) and were seated next to us. The waiter said they'd made an exception as they were locals, and there were no other tables free.

Obviously, we left. We had no choice. Paid for starters and drinks. The cheeky fuckers tried to get us to pay for the ordered but uneaten mains. We didn't leave because we wanted to. It still annoys me to this day.

I'm not a huge dog fan, personally. I don't mind one in a cafe but the problem happens when there's multiples. A dog section, or outdoor seating would be better. I'd tend not to go somewhere popular with dog walkers as I don't feel comfortable. Obviously the owners have found they make their money that way.

That’s fine but you can’t expect to dictate whether dogs are allowed

Anothernewname123 · 25/11/2023 20:18

Dogs just being 'there' doesn't bother me. Things that have bothered me in places that allow dogs:

  1. The fucking barking. Shut the fucking thing up, it's not cute, it does bother people.
  2. Lying in the way. People need to get to the toilet/door/till and the waiters need to get about but the sleeping dog is in the fucking way.
  3. Scratching dog. Particularly disgusting when the hair is flying up and landing on my table/food.
  4. Waiter stroking dog then handling food. <vom>
  5. Dogs that try to be friendly. If I wanted attention from a dog I'd own one or at least ask an owner can I pet it. I don't want a dog shoving its nose against me or putting its head on my lap.
  6. The smell. You know, that doggy smell. Not dog shit just damp dirty dog. Not in all places but you do get a whiff, usually from a bigger 'traditional dog' (like a Labrador or Rottweiler, rather than one of those doodlepoo designer dogs) <vom>

I go out for coffees most weekends, a dog friendly place wouldn't be on my list of places to visit. Although, I have been tempted to bring my cat on a lead to see if people would think that was also OK.

People can say similar about kids in public places too

Until the fad wears off, as fads always do, and/or until there's a serious incident between dogs/a dog and a human in a cafe, which makes business owners think twice.

....and they can be reminded that comparing small humans with animals isn't an actual argument.

LuckySantangelo35 · 25/11/2023 20:22

why can’t you dog lovers just leave your dogs at home?! Are they like some sort of social crutch for you or something?!
