To think this comment from a friend was cruel?

I was walking through town with a friend looking for a bite to eat. We walked past a charity that provide hot meals and drinks for the homeless/vulnerable, and there was a large crowd of people waiting to receive their meal.
My friend joked 'This is where we're eating tonight.'
I was quite disgusted, and told her 'You're very lucky to not be in that position.' she didn't say anything and changed the subject.
I'm sure it was just a case of speaking without thinking, but I was quite disappointed tbh.

I assume you don't have much of a sense of humour Op .....

Kelly099 · 24/11/2023 19:49

I do but not at the expense of vulnerable people.

It sounds like it was an attempted joke that didn't quite land. Your reaction was a bit OTT and you should let it go.

60PercentClub · 24/11/2023 19:50

Meh, it was a mildly insensitive comment to make but its a bit of an over reaction to be 'disgusted'.

Kelly099 · 24/11/2023 19:51

Maybe I did overreact, we've just got different types of humour I suppose.

N4ish · 24/11/2023 19:51

Honestly, it was just a joke. Not particularly funny but I doubt she meant any harm.

BananaPalm · 24/11/2023 19:52

I think your reaction was spot on OP. It's disgusting to make fun of someone who needs to use soup kitchen. Sense of humour doesn't have anything to do with it. Basic human decency and compassion does.

Kelly099 · 24/11/2023 19:52

Yeah, I'm sure she didn't mean harm by it.

NotExactlySuits · 24/11/2023 19:53

I absolutely agree with you OP!

Newmumatlast · 24/11/2023 19:53

I personally don't think jokes like that are funny so I'm with you OP. And I usually am up for banter.

XenoBitch · 24/11/2023 19:53

It sounds like an attempt at humour that fell a bit flat. No need to be so outraged by it.

Pebbles601 · 24/11/2023 19:54

Good on you for calling it out! Not funny at all, fair play to you for saying that because it is absolutely true.

PippyLongTits · 24/11/2023 19:55

I don't think it was that bad. I assume she was joking that the line is long so the food must be good rather than hahaha isn't homelessness funny.

Hermittrismegistus · 24/11/2023 19:55

It would've made me chuckle.

fetchacloth · 24/11/2023 19:56

Think she was jesting OP, it probably just didn't hit the right note.
I'd be inclined to let it go really.

HorseFaced · 24/11/2023 19:57

Kelly099 · 24/11/2023 19:49

I do but not at the expense of vulnerable people.

But had you been searching for ages and it was her way of saying “hurry up and make a fucking decision”

Kelly099 · 24/11/2023 19:57

I think it's just because there is an extreme problem with homelessness where we live, it's very sad tbh, and especially in winter. So I just felt sad for them. Im sure she isn't genuinely mocking the homeless.

OP posts:
Sparklfairy · 24/11/2023 19:58

Well normally when restaurants have lines out the door it means it's exclusive and popular and really good. So she probably made that connection and the joke just didn't land.

I honestly thought you were going to say she wanted to eat there, taking food from homeless people to save money or something. Which is way worse.

OnionOnionH · 24/11/2023 20:00

It sounds like an attempt at a joke. I doubt the intention was to offend, so I would be inclined to just let it go.

HeddaGarbled · 24/11/2023 20:00

She wasn’t making fun of the people who use that facility. It was actually an inclusive sort of a joke.

I can understand being annoyed with her if she was turning her nose up at the clients but she was doing the exact opposite, bless her.

Mongrelsrbeautiful · 24/11/2023 20:02

If she said it in earshot of the people waiting, I wouldn't be impressed. If it was quietly to you, I'd take it in the spirit it was meant - a joke.

Diamonde · 24/11/2023 20:03

Unless she has form for laughing at other people's misfortune, you completely overreacted.

I'm guessing she doesn't and just tried to make an off the cuff joke. Seriously, don't be hard work. If someone makes an unfunny joke just move on.

SwedishSchnauzer · 24/11/2023 20:07

She just sounds a bit daft, I wouldn’t blow it up into something bigger

Aquamarine1029 · 24/11/2023 20:07

Im sure she isn't genuinely mocking the homeless.

So then why did you scold her like she's some naughty school girl? She made a joke, absolutely not making fun of those people, and you know that. I smell a massive whiff of virtue signaling here.

StarlightLime · 24/11/2023 20:09

So why was it "cruel"? You can't have it both ways.
